<!-- message --> I have successfully flashed a few 01-03 stock Protege 2.0 and Protege5 ECU's with the MP3 PCM. I currently have 3 ECUs ready to go so I was thinking $250 shipped and when you send me you old ecu and I successfully flash that one I will refund you $100. So in the end it cost you $150+plus shipping the old ecu to me. Let me know if you are interested. Thanks.

Dyno Results. Only 3hp and 4lbs of torque gained but look how smooth the powerband is. The car is more eager to pull and you can feel it.

The Software I use to flash:

And the Hardware:

Oh yeah my mods:
Injen take, OBX Ceramic Coated Header, Catted midpipe, Racing Beat Catback, JDM Intake Cam, Medieval Light Crank Pulley.

I was hoping for for power on the dyno but it was 91 degrees that day with 42% humidity.

did you change the IM as well or does this flash work with the regular FS IM without producing an engine light?

SpicyorangeMSP

It will work with the regular FS IM with no CEL I haven't had time to install my ported and VTCS removed IM yet.

so, let me get this right. You're selling the service of flashing an ECU for $150?

He's flashing my ECU for me. I believe it is just the Mazda file though, I don't know if he can custom flash.
I was hoping for for power on the dyno but it was 91 degrees that day with 42% humidity.
im thinking this had something to do with it. i have simota intake, header, sls midpipe, rb catback and JUST PAID 300 FOR MY MP3 ECU(FML). it may be a butt dyno but there is no way i only gained the little bit of horsepower that he dynoed at. my car pulls a lot harder to only have about a 6 hp gain from all my mods. if i got all this and only 6 hp well then (squinty)

id prolly jump on this...but premium...nahhhh

Rogue

you can't just look at the top end numbers. Look at the amount of area gained under the curve. That's why it feels like it's pulling so much harder.

Yeah all I can do now is the Mazda PCM file.

If you use Plus Unleaded it will be only $2 more per fill up.

It was damn hot and humid that so my numbers weren't what I wanted but my goal was to get the ECU differences. You can see that the MP3 map gives a smoother power curve that is why it continues to pull harder versus the crappy stock one going up and down.

very true its alot smoother. wheni finally did my mods mines the ecu...you could kinda hear the power fluctuating as the car pulled. ow i just get a constant pull through the gears.

I have a completely stock 2003 Protege ES. Would this actually benefit me or should i save my $150? Also would i have to use the premium gas after the ecu flash?

KrayzieFox
06-17-2009, 12:02 AM
Yeah you definitely would benefit, but you do need to use premium gas.

Also, this only works with 5-speed Protege ECUs since there was no automatic MP3s produced.

seems like the best bang for your buck n/a mod i have ever seen on this forum for the protege. look at the smooth curve, if i was n/a i would be all over this.

This is one of the greatest if not THE greatest mod to do to an N/A protege, other than suspension

No, it doesnt give HUGE amounts of power, but, the powerband is SOOOO much smoother and the car just wants to keep pulling, instead of dying at 4500K RPM with the stock ECU

I had sold off my MP3 ECU a few months ago, and, i've kicked myself since, so, i'm sending in my spare 5spd ECU to get reflashed to MP3 spec, cause, i do miss it so

Where is the ECU located so if i did want to do this id be able to get it out and send it to ya? Pics would be helpful :) Also how long do you think it would take if i am sending it to ya from Delaware?

Pull up the side sill trim, and front right lower carpet trim panel in the passenger seat. Pull back the carpet and you'll see a metal kick panel. Un-bolt the kick panel, and the ECU is mounted on the underside of it. 4 10mm bolts to get the panel off, 1 10mm bolt to unhook the ECU from the harness, and 4 10mm bolts to remove the ECU from the underside of the kick panel. Easy.

It takes about an hour to flash so if I am able to flash that night or the next that's about 1-2 days and how ever long shipping is.

Here is a link to a Unichip Install which is pretty much the same and you can see pics.

It's not officially been done, but custom flashes CAN be done. Depending on when I can get some time with him, I'm getting a full custom flash for my build sometime before the end of the week.

Huh. i could flash my current extra to MP3 spec, then, have the stocker in my car flashed to MSP spec for the "just incase of boost"

Yes that is definitely a possibility

I didn't; a local shop did, and paid an insane amount of money to get the hardware, and has put in hundreds of hours of work to learn how all this stuff works on the side while running his shop.

The OP of this thread is asking a lot less money to use an existant flash then what this guy does, but this guy does optimized flashes for cars (he's done MZ3s, MSPs, RX8s, and a couple of others).

Mine would be the first Protegé he would do. For about 600USD, I'm getting two custom flashes (one for my break-in, one for when I'm ready to "giv'er") including a couple of hours of WB data logging to get my AFR's right, and set the timing correctly. This should be done tomorrow afternoon as long as I get my car before I head over.

I'm most definetely going to hit you up for a reflashed ECU soon. So let me get this straight: I send you $250 (PayPal okay?) and you ship me a P5 ECU reflashed as an MP3 ECU. Then I swap my stock P5 ECU for the flashed MP3 ECU you sent me for all the sweet powerband goodness into my P5. Then I ship you my stock P5 ECU (shipping at my expense, which is fine because I work in a shipping department of a small shop and will sneak it out via FedEx for free, heh-heh) and you refund me $100?

That's a great freakin deal! I've been hesitating on buying an MP3 ECU for a few months now, just hesitant to pull the trigger. But for $150 + shipping one ECU to Texas? Heck yes! You're a life saver, mate. And a money saver to boot!(drinks)

This is an interesting development. I'm curious, since I have always heard that to flash you need two cars, one with an MP3 ecu and another without, physically hooked up together to flash. How is this possible without that setup?

Not to rain on everyone's parade, but selling this service needs to be approved by Antoine, and may require AMM status. The thread has been open long enough to gauge that there is indeed interest in this service at this price. So it seems that the thread has fulfilled its purpose.
