Saturday it was the Lapping day of the www.ClubMazdaQuebec.com and of course i wasn't gonna miss that oppurtunity to show the power and the great handling i have in my (Cantine) as we call my 5 around here in Québec. The only video i have for the moment is an inboard video of a '09 slightly modified Subaru WRX STi, but if you watch carefully around 7min43 of the first video you can see i'm already in front of a Mazda3 and a '03 Mazda protege with full set-up of Coilovers, brakes/pads and tires track ready. Enjoy!!!! In a few days i will have more vids to show you.

Hey VenomDesign, the guy in the STi is not as good as you... with the turbo and 4WD. He didn't gain much during cornering... he gain most only during straight... ;)

ahhahahah Thanks alot my friend. Now i need to change brakes, i will be able to hit the brakes later and harder. I will probably go with Carbotech AX6 brakes pads. I'm still waiting to receive videos... as soon as i get them i'll post them here. (shrug)

Hey Venom. How much of an improvement was the handling and response with the Eibach kit? Did you also get in on the Tri-Point sway bar?

It looks like the thing is handling very well. I've done the sway bar but no springs yet. I'd like to find something that will be close to stock height with no more than 1" drop. I like to keep things stealthy.

Just take the MazdaSpeed 3 spring, it's .75 - 1 inch !

I thought about the MS3 springs but the pics I've seen show the back dropped a lot more than expected. Some of them look like they are carrying a load of bricks in the rear.

(cool), awesome, people movers rock, LOL (along with some driving skills of course, there is no magic wand here :D)

....And that is the difference between Mazda and non-Mazda people movers, the Zoom-Zoom is not just about how fast they accelerate, it is more about how well they can handle (with good mods let's be clear ;))

VenomDesign

No i don't have the 3 points sway bar but i would like to :D. And the improvement of the handling with the Eibach prokit is awesome. But with stiffer shocks i will certainly have done way better than what you see on vids. Of course the weight of the 5 and the height make it a little more difficult to handle in tight cornering than a regular Mazda3. But as everyone knows, if you ain't a good driver, whatever the car you will be driving the result will always be the same at the end.

BTW, here's other videos that have been put online today. You can see me much onger this time. And i'm also posting my only mistake of the day (without any dommage oufff (bow))

My mistake, but on this run, i was beating my own record for the fastest top speed (125 km/h.) Watch the result hahahaha (sadbanana).

Do you mean minutes 6:30 to 7:30 on the last video? Yeah, it looks faaaast :p

Going off-topic here, But does the term Cantine mean cafeteria or something in French or English? In Spanish Cantina means an old style pub or bar, so it is more suitable, LOL (2thumbs)

This is the "cool down" and it is important for the brakes to do so. At least one lap without touching the brakes is required.

Lucky that i didn't broke anything under my Cantine...(cabpatch)

I really don't know for the length of this circuit. But the fastest car that day (WRX STI '09) on the straight line made a top speed of apprx. 135km/h.

On my best run, i did about 125km/h , which is 10km/h more than the Protegé and the Mazda3.

Haha, the funny thing is if I were to pick two people in this community who I'd guess would track their 5's I would hands down pick dima and Venom.

What did it cost you guys for the track time? I'm guessing a little cheaper than a typical day since it was an event for both of you guys right?

VenomDesign

100$

And i did 6 runs of 15 min. each. That's a long day of track.

Just read this. . the STI can't seem to find the line. What mods do you have on the 5 at the time of this event? I love the near-flat weight transfer I saw through the esses.

Ou est le circuit? The ClubMazdaQuebec site has nothing listed.

mods list:
18" Rx8 wheels (225/40)
Cold Air Intake (AEM)
Cat Back (Mazdaspeed)
Eibach Prokit
that's it ;)

And the race track is Mecaglisse [http://www.mecaglisse.com/]. A wonderfull small track for passionate guys like me. (bike)

PS: Are you a member of the www.ClubMazdaQuebec.com ?

Thanks for the list, and the track info. Not a member of that organisation, and almost a 5 owner! Back in '06 I chose an Odyssey over the 5 and have been on/off the fence ever since.

Seeing your track-day in the family hauler has me pricing out a '09 5-spd Sport - last quote was $16,090 USD + tax/tags.

Interestingly, the last Eibach ProKit I had was on my '95 Integra GS-R. Did you stay with the stock shocks?

I am an active member of the Audi Car Club Chicagoland Chapter and I track my modded A4. Last year, I was able to convince my wife to come out and participate in one of our events in her Mazda5. As luck would have it, I had a center diff begin to die on the way to the track in my Audi, so we both drove the 5 for the weekend. The weekend was excerises for the beginners on saturday morning (slalom, lane toss, and threshold braking), followed by 20 min sessions saturday afternoon and all sunday. Since it was a 2 driver car, the 5 saw a lot of track time. Mods for the event were Hawk HPS pads and some old Kumho's 712s (215/40/17 IIRC) I happened to have in the garage up front. Otherwise stock.

Car did really well actually. I had to adjust my braking and turnin points compared to my Audi which has big brakes and track rubber, but I had a good time. I'll admit I was done with it by sunday afternoon, but it was a welcomed challenge to have to change everything up due to the limitations of the car. But overall, it handled a lot better than I would have thought and while I did have to point by an awful lot as I was in the instructor group it was an overall positive experience. I have a lot more confidence in the 5 on the street as a result. And my wife had fun too!

Ignore the dirt and the dent...

Pics of me driving:

Pics of my wife driving:
http://bit.ly/cCHW30

edit: Our 5 is an auto (obviously) and for a bit I was shifting manually, but I found that about 12-15 min into a 20 min session, the gear indicator on the dash would go out. It would always come back later, but I never really figured out why. I found that just leaving it in D and choosing my gear shifts via the gas pedal to work a bit better anyway, so I never really worried about it.

A quick google search found this in the PNW area...

http://www.pnwhpde.com/schedule.htm

I am sure you could find a group to run with. I know that we here at the chicago audi club love noobies to inject the track needle into and our events are open to non Audis no problem, you just need to join the club. I would recommend a group that includes instruction, as you'll learn a heck of a lot more when compared to open lapping/test and tune style days. Once you get a few events under your lap, open events are great too.

It is a great hobby!

thanks! we have a professional photographer at our events that shoots and then sells CDs of his shots at the end of the weekend, thus all the pictures. Like I said, had I planned ahead, I would have washed the car and perhaps even had the dent taken care of... but I am personally more of a track junkie so I care less about how it looks and more about how it turns and stops, so my focus was elsewhere.

Thanks for the track info, Bryan. Mission is the closest big track, and they do have a great club with lots of driving opportunities.

Unfortunately, minimum 4 hrs away if the ferry connection is perfect.

My marriage would not survive track days, as my wife loves the 5 more than she loves me, and she does not appreciate revs above 4K.

I have my 22 year old Mustang to beat on when I need a fix.
Our local dragstrip (Saratoga Speedway) has given me 15 years of entertainment.

Cars that are meant to shift at 4k are called diesels and have redlines set accordingly!
