You can probably use a 0W-40 synthetic oil, but if you want to use only non-synthetic oil, I would stick to 5W-30. Synthetic oils require few or no viscosity "enhancers" (I believe they are also called indexers) to extend their range, so a 0W-40 should have no adverse effect.

No, I use 5W-30 synthetic in all my cars. Walmart has the 5 quart jugs for as little as $20 (Pennzoil synthetic) and about $22.00 for Mobile 1. I did talk to a Mobile 1 technical guy a while back and he told me that he was using 0W-40 in his truck in Texas. Porsche uses 0W-40 in their Boxster but that oil is not as widely available at Walmart, especially in 5 quart jugs.

Just stick with the 5w-30. Pennzoil Platinum (their full synthetic) is suppsoed to be one of the best around.

Don't celebrate yet. This post will get resurrected after sitting for 3 weeks and suddenly sprout 4 new pages. (mswerd)

Doesnt pennzoil/quaker state/whatever else from pennsylvania actually really reall bad to use because of the parafin wax that builds up in your engine? This inturn causes your engine to work harder and wear out sooner. you should use shell, valvoline, or mobil 1. dont use a synthetic if you havent run synthetic since the first oil change after the break in oil because your seals will leak. The only real advantage to synthetic is you wont burn oil on a cold start(if your engine is still ok). Just change your oil constantly, at least every 3k or if you have been beating on it hard or when it smells burnt(even if it looks clean). Run a 40 weight oil in the summer if you plan on tearing ass all around.

Pennzoil platinum rates among the best on wear/scar tests of any oils around, Mobil1 usually rates about last among full synthetics.

I know plenty of people who have switched to synthetic oil (usually after they have bought a used car) and they haven't gotten leaky seals.

Your engine should never burn oil on start-up, synthetic or dino... The advantage with sythetics is that synthetic oils absorb and hold onto dirt/particles in a suspension and therefore don't allow them to deposit as sludge on your engine components.

You don't need to change you oil more often than 3k, thats bs propaganda spread by oil companies. With a good synthetic and easy driving, you should be able to go 5k easily. If you drive hard, change it @ 3k.

And you don't need a 40 weight oil in the fs-de motor. Use the factory suggested 5w-30. During the summer you can use a 10w-30 if you really want. The viscosity at running temps will not be significantly higher from summer to winter so why would you need a 40 weight oil? What matters is that you don't want your engine stuggling through thicker oil during the winter at start-up, so you want a 5w multi viscosity oil.

well running a 40 weight in the summer wont break down from heat as fast as 30 weight....that is a good thing if your doing alot of track/backroad stuff because the oil will slosh around the pan and if you havent rebaffeled your pan or installed a oil cooler this will help keep your moving parts coated. I have always changed my oil at 3k or less because I beat on my car pretty hard and havent had any issues(fingers crossed) and I still have full compression and whatnot. As a general though people are adviced to use a 30 weight because they generally dont beat on there cars and need better gas mileage(you will notice alot of new cars are using 20 weight now because they want to claim better mpg), so for everyday driving use a 5 or 10-30 not a 10w-40 because you wont reach temps that you will benefit from the thicker oil or use a 20 weight for better mpg(watch out though because it breaks down faster(smells burnt? change it!). As well you really should change your oil every 3k because changing your filter is what really prevents sludge.

Synthetic oils suspend particles that would normally become sludge. Dino oils do not, they just push the stuff around and keep stuff lubed up. This is the advantage of synthetic oils. Only once you hit the sythetic's "breaking point" where it can't suspend anything more, then it will stop performing. This point is FAR beyond 3k miles. You don't need to change it sooner than 3k. Unless it's a track car, or you bounce off the rev limiter like a jackass every day while driving, then 3k-5k is just fine with a good synthetic.
