View Full Version : Opinions on powdercoated wheels.

I have a set of OZ ultra legerras in gold. I'm thinking about having them professionally powdercoated (low temp) true red, to match the car.

Bad idea? Personally, I think it would look pretty good. I saw a Red Porsche 996 turbo that was red with red wheels and thought it looked bad assed. I'm trying to make sure it wasn't the fact it was a Porsche that made it awesome.

Hmmm...might have to see a sample of this said combo before I make judgment.

Red wheels on a red car are not going to look good, IMO.

I think you hit the phenomenon right on the head in regards to the Porsche...it looked good because it was a Porsche...

post a side pic of yuor vehicle and have some fine gentleman/gentlewoman to photoshop those gold ozs to red Ozs, and then we shall be the jury

im pretty sure it was just the porsche. I saw a blue civic with blue wheels and I was underwhelmed.

that being said, I look forward to you doing it anyway and proving me wrong...

Everyone also told me that blue wheels would look stupid on my motorcycle. I did it anyway.

I like getting good advice and throwing in the trash.

I think the blue looks sweet on the bike. I also like the gold on the car, are you just looking for something different or what?

SwampAss
06-01-2009, 04:48 PM
Different...and the gold is starting to wear on the insides of the spokes. OZ has a 1 year warranty on finish and I'm over 2 years on them. I have only ever washed them as directed with mild detergent and a soft rag. They don't look bad at all but I can see it getting worse as time goes on.

Mine are not the only ones I have ever seen wear like this. I've seen others.

A little OT but what spoiler lip do you have on the rear?

I think it would look unique on your car, however the gold/red combo looks awesome!

I really like your gold/red theme you have going on... I think the only themes you can really pull off with a TR are gold/red and red/black.

OT but do you mind telling me where you got those eyelids? I want them.

It's a Porsche is why it looked good.

Personally, I think the gold OZs look great on your TR MS3.

there are some red OZ Alleggerita HLT wheels on tirerack...they also have blue, gold, white, black, orange and gunmetal...... here is what they look like....http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/MiniWheelSearchServlet?nonWinter=true&partNum=W0182820084R&autoMake=Mazda&autoModel=MazdaSpeed3&autoYear=2008&autoModClar=&wIndex=63&grid=true&sw=1280

i think a different touch would be to powdercoat the wheels red, but then do a black lip.....

edit: oorrrrrrrr, after looking at your wheels and trying to think of something different. what if you powdercoat them black and then coat the center of the wheels (where the lugs are) RED.....so instead of the typical black with red lip, you'll have black with red center. bare with me if that seems stupid, i work graveyard shift and my mind runs at 100000000 miles a minute trying to keep myself awake.

mine are starting to wear a little bit too, at first i thought it was just stubborn dirt in the corners, but it's actually the wheels getting dull and worn down

I think the red looks good in the tirerack mock up!!

Just be different and do something unique!!
Black wheels with a red lip are OVERRATED AND OVERUSED!! imo

Red would be sweet

Red on red could be cool. But for me I have decided against powder coating my wheels mainly due to the cost which comes out to be almost enough for a new set of wheels after you figure in the mounting and dismounting of tires. Also I am not so sure how well it hold up compared to a factory finish. I have silver 18" rpf1's and I wanted gold but I am just going to live with the silver.

mattj3636
06-02-2009, 04:23 PM
... i paid 10 a wheel for mounting. 10 a wheel for dismounting. 30 a wheel for powdercoating.

10 x 8 + 30 x 4 = $200.

show me where i can get a good rim for 50 dollars a piece. please.

Young Roids
06-02-2009, 04:26 PM
I was hearing like $200 per wheel after sandblasting and all when I was looking at it. For $200 total I would consider it.

mattj3636
06-02-2009, 04:27 PM
depends where you go, stay away frmo performance shops or custom wheels shops.

go to industrial powdercoating places that normally do big industrial jobs.

i found one in buffalo to do mine for 30 since it was a small job to them, sandblasting and everything, huge variety of colors too.

the wheel places will nail you since thats all they do.

I've done some reading on this subject lately and while you will find plenty of people who have had their wheels powdercoated you will also find plenty of people who advise against it.\

FYI my wheels are painted, not powdercoated.

This was an excerpt from one of the sites I came across when I was doing research on this.

"Found your article most enlightening. A metallurgist friend told me a few years ago that things like aluminum wheel spindles should not be powder coated. He explained that aluminum billet material (6061-T6 ?) changed crystal structure at a critical temperature around 410 degrees F (as I recall).
The thrust was that the heating step would adversely affect the strength of the material. Non-structural components would be OK, but not something that "holds the spokes on".

The metallurgist is correct. Products like wheel billets, scuba tanks, etc. can be powder coated, but only with powders which cure below peak metal temperature of 300 degrees F. The crystalline realignment at 400 degrees F causes the previous ductile aluminum to become brittle. Imagine the catastrophe when an 80 cu. ft. scuba tank explodes under 3000 psi pressure after an unauthorized powder coat (this actually happened). To my knowledge, all Aluminum wheels and other strength-critical aluminum components are powder coated with these cooler curing powders."

You will find that your typical powdercoating shop sets their ovens to around 400ish. Like I said, many many people have had their wheels coated and have no problems but I did not want to take that risk with an 800 dollar wheel.

I have a local guy who utilizes a low temp powder coating system of around 250 degree F. He does motorcycle stuff mostly but can do wheels.

As long as your not a ginger kid, it will look f'n awesome. Besides you can then start thinking of what color to do next. I liked the gold better than the black, and this will be very unique
