Hi all!
I'm Vagelis from Greece and I have a white 2 1.5.
The car is a 5d crystal white pearl edition with SAP.
After 17.500km driven, some of them in the track, I have to admit that its a very sporty car with great handling, sharp steering and powerfull enough to compete against all the other cars with similar specs such as yaris ts and ignis sport.
My mods are:
Ultralite G-Spec wheels 16x7,5 et40(wheight 6,8kgr each)
J's Racing Lug nuts M12x1,5
Window tint Lumar Titanium
MSD Dashhawk
Full custom exhaust
BMC DIA(70-130) induction kit custom fitted
The exhaust setup is 4-2-1 header(38mm-42mm-48mm) with an HJS 200cpi catalyst, 48mm free flow mid box and stock 45mm backbox in order to achieve backpressure until an ecu remap will be done.

http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/7292/dsc00989.th.jpg (http://img76.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00989.jpg)
For the MAF,a 59mm inner diameter tube is used, the same as the toyota mr2 1.8 vvti.
After these mods i dynoed the car and it achieved 115,8hp and 139nm of torque. The numbers would be better if the ecu could readjust more. With an ecu remapping things will be much better and I'm hopping to achieve more than 125hp.But we will see about that.

Hahahah yes..its on three wheels! It was that way in every corner in the track!
Has anyone tried to tune the mzr 1.5 engine? It's a rather dificult to tune engine as I figured out mainly because the stock ecu can't readjust itself to the exhaust-intake changes. It definately needs a remmaping but I don't even know if this is possible for the OEM ecu.

why not?
vdsracing
11-03-2009, 02:59 PM
why not?
because it can't change two basic things for n/a tuning
1.advance(it can only decrease it but it can't increase it)
2.rev limit.
According to my dyno diagram, the stock camshaft holds power at high rpm and if we increase the revlimit by 200-300rpm would be good.
I dont know if the valves will be ok with it but we will find out soon.
There's no need for a pigy back ecu.The stock ecu is programmable so you just have to find a good tuner with the apropriate tools.

My current header setup is 4-2-1(38mm-42mm-48mm) and the lenght of "4s" is 38mm and the same are the "2s".
I think it would be better with the same pipe diameters but a bit longer "4s" in order to have more top end power.
I will have a new custom header with better curves and better quality.
The thunder header that is 4-1 with 55mm pipe i think is too big even for the 1.5
Ofcourse I may be mistaken.

The best thing is someone to test 3-4 header setups to the same car and then we will have an idea of what works good on a stock mzr.
When an engine is tuned, then the header must change too.
There is a lot of theory of how the dimensions of a header must be,according to the engine specs, camshafts, power band, rpm limit etc.
I'm dont know this theory but I've tried many different setups on my car and i think that for a stock or lightly tuned mzr 1.5 or 1.3 a good setup is a 4-2-1 header with 48mm pipe and 200cpi cat.The catalyst must be not too close to the header.

The sensor of the gauge is depicted in the last picture and it is attached to the bolt of the oil pan.Everything was done by me and it wasnt very difficult.
The other thing is the MSD DashHawk.Google it.

I think you should have got an oil filter spacer which is actually the adapter for the 2 sensors, oil temp and pressure. The reading should be much more accurate using this method.

Yes that would be good but its very accurate the way I put it,too.
There is no "standing" oil in the oil circuit so it is ok.If someone wants to put oil temp+press then the oil filter adaptor is a must.
With regular driving the oil is 75-80deg C'.After a 4minute full throtlle uphill course the oil went to 95-100deg's with outside temprature 18 celsius.

Never u try 1/4 mile?
I've raced alsmost every car in the street but I've never raced in a drag strip.
At a 0-600m I'm faster than:
-Citroen C2 VTS 1.6 125hp
-Grande Punto Tjet 120
-Punto Mk2b Sporting 1.4 1st stage(induction-full exhaust-ecu)
-Fiesta Mk7 Sport 1.6 120
-Fiesta Mk6 S 1.6 (induction-catback)
-Seat Ibiza Mk1 1.4 1st stage
-Ignis Sport 1.5 induction-catback
-BMW e36 318is 143hp
-106 Rallye 1.6 8v
-106 Rallye 1.3
-mx5 1.6 nb
At 40km/h->600m(2nd gear) I'm a bit slower than the Mk7 Fiesta and the BMW.And I'm about the same or a bit slower in high speed than a Swift Sport.
I raced an RX8 192hp rolling 1st gear for 500m and I was 2 car lengths behind..not bad!!(2thumbs)

You can have a decat exhaust but a you'll also have a cel.
I never had a cel with my aftermarket cat because the sensors were relocated. If they are not relocated properly you will have a cell.
Anyway,in order to have maximum benefit from your exhaust and induction system an ecu tuning must be done at hte end.Unfortunatelly I havent tune my ecu yet but I hope to do so soon.

I have a chip between the sensors and the ecu, it modifies the values which ups the power to 82kw, we work in kw's. It makes the car much more driveable. This works but a ECU remap is still the ideal, there are more chips on the market these days but i had 2. A unichip and a petrolpower chip, you can remove it before servicing the car for the warranty too.

Also a custom alloy front strut bar was intsalled. The strut bar mount is also used for the torque damper.

Have you realised a diffrence between with an without the Strutbar? I want to by a few bars from ultraracing.com but it depends on whether it make a difference.

hi, been following this post for a while, you have done a lot of work, do you work with metals or are you an engineer of some sort, custom modding parts to fit yoyr car is good, wish i could get same done, i have the TS2 model, 85bhp, which tb h is powerful for the little car haha, im wanting to get an intake and an exaust fitted, as for ecu, i read that after fitting the CAI to then disconnect your battery, this supposdely resets the ecu, then connect it back up and start the car, it should then redo the mix of air and fuel due to the difference in air being taken from the CAI

In general, you wan't see any severe acceleration improovment with intake-exhaust tuning to this car.Better sound maybe, better throttle response yes but don't expect to gain noticeable power. If you really want to n/a tune your engine, then with intake-exhaust-ecu tuning you may gain 10-13hp but I'm not sure if it's worth it.
You can start with an intake in order to have nice sound and better response and then by driving the car you will know what has to be further tuned and upgraded.
Tim,thanks mate.I like your car too and wait for more driving videos!! :O)

hehe i have finally resigned to engine-tune the mazda 2. It makes no sense to n/a-tune the 1.3l. So i think i race this little car just one more time this year and then its just my alltime car. But i´ll make a video of the last ride ;-)

I REALLY like the head unit...let me know how it looks when its below zero out and you start the car (and when its over 100 out too) ;-)
Also, before you modified the suspension and just had the toyos, how did she do on track days, did the extra grip get you close to rolling it at all? Reason being is my plan is Toyo R1R's on a 15x6" rim (to stay in stock class for autocross\solo) and Im curious on how she will act.

I don't get it.You think I'll have issues when the temperature is very high or low?Why would that happen?
Of course its not a high quality brand name,it's just made in china but all those that already have them, they don't have any problem.
Installed iGo 8 navigation today and its very good and the gps antenna easily locks 7 sattelites!! :O)
In the oddity of a place I live we get below zero temps and extreme heat as well, and ive had electronics left in cars that the screens dont work right. Even my stock mazda head unit you coudnt read the lcd when it was 10F or lower, it just wouldnt work till the heat from the unit warmed it up. I wasnt saying your new unit would have it, I was just asking, I think that unit you have pretty much fills in every piece they left out in a factory 2 so I hope it performs well as i may go that route too eventually (need to get track ready first). Thanks for posting all of those vids not many people have posted anything "fun" on the 2 on youtube so youre the superstar right now.

07-07-2011, 05:16 PM
The video quality is perfect. The screen is 16:9 TFT High Definition and it is just like a normal Tv.
The sound quality is much better than the oem unit, but the oem unit has a better radio receiver.
The brand is Video Blue I think,in fact it's a noname unit made in China. The future will tell if it is reliable. ;O)

Hi Vagelis,
I see that your intake has a 59 mm tube where the MAF is located. Is that the biggest you could get away with before it would throw a code (CEL)?
Thanks,
John
vdsracing
07-21-2011, 07:35 PM
Hi John. No,a little bigger diameter should work without cel. We've done it to an other mazda2 and there is not a bog dofference.Maybe a bit more power and a bit more consumption..I don't remember the exact diameter to be specific.
I don't remember the exact diameter to be specific.
2.5" / 63.5 outer diameter.
But if the induction kit that you will be used is free as hell the ECU will throw CEL.
So the safer choice is the stock diameter :)

Hi VDS,
Don't want to sound negative, but there's something you might want to look at. If the shoulder straps are mounted too low in the back, people have experienced compression of the spine in a frontal accident.
I don't have the specifics of the best location.
