View Full Version : WTF...when it rains, the BRAKE LIGHT GOES OFF??

Ever since i got my Engine replaced a month ago or so, my break light and ABS light was coming on intermittently.

When i first had my engine installed, the light never came on. IT wasn't till the second day that it appeared after the install.
Sometimes it would come on right away after a cold start and sometimes it wouldn't till later that evening - sometimes not for a few days?

Currently, for the past few weeks, it's been permanently lit at any point turning the car on. I've been getting heavy rain this past week in Ontario, and the light stays off only when it rains lol?? wtf?.......

To make matters worse, the night before the rain came, i was taking a corner hard and my left rear caliper seized up and heated up like an iron on monday night.
Woke up tuesday morning, before it started raining, and checked to see if the caliper was grabbing still - it wasn't (ughdance).

Has anyone experienced this or has input?? (bang).

I had a caliper randomly seizing up on me in my other vehicle before. I just replaced the caliper itself. It seemed like the pins just needed to be lubed up since they weren't sliding freely anymore. As for the brake light, could be low on fluid or a bad ABS sensor?

Oh yah, i should mention that i've covered all the basic pre-cautions.

i.e.

Brake pads, fluid levels, everythings 60% and better.

I'm assuming it'll be a sensor, but why does rain affect it?? (uhm)

^^ and that would make sense, but the moisture is helping lol - (thumb)

One thing i find always happens to me with the protege (both the P5 and my current MSP) is the fact that the calipers are constantly seizing!!!! Most annoying!

I wish there was a way to know which sensor it is. I have the same happening on my car and other then taking it to a garage and getting scammed $80 for plugging it to the computer, I don't know how to figure it out.

Take it to an auto parts store (call first to see if they have an ABS scanner). They'll scan for free. It's disgusting that mechanics actually charge for this.

im pretty sure you can by a code reader for around that much lol (or are you talking different codes than that of a cel?)

also the brakes on proteges are a nightmare. i have to replace all four calipers on my car soon. driver side right is completely seized. i believe its a poorly designed caliper that is the issue. lots of pros and p5s have the problem.

replace the ABS fuse under the fuse box in the engine bay, thats where i would start.. also, there are ABS sensors on each wheel, check for frayed/pinched/bare wires!

That's the bitch, code reader does not pick up ABS codes since it is a separate module....No car shop runs codes for free in Montreal...and we thought Canada was a socialist country....I performed a visual inspection but I didn't see anything abnormal. I'll check again
