A 24-year-old man was airlifted to an area hospital with serious injuries Sunday afternoon after he was crushed by his own car.

The man had propped up his car with a jack and was working underneath it at his El Mirage home, according to firefighters. The jack gave way, pinning the man underneath.

Firefighter Mark Bessey said the man had used a factory jack, intended for changing tires, to hold the car up. He was not using jack stands to support the full weight of the car.

"It's just a really bad idea," Bessey said. "Stock jacks are designed to be used to take a tire on and off, not to hold a car up while somebody's underneath it. That's just not their purpose."

Bessey suspected the man accidentally knocked into the jack while he was underneath the car, causing it to slip.

The man suffered a broken jaw among other injuries, according to El Mirage police chief Mike Frazier.

I almost created a thread warning people not to wrap their wangs in bacon and dive into a cage filled with starving pitbulls, but instead I thought that if someone doesn't have basic common sense, then let Darwin sort things out.

I always put my car up on ramps to work on, but even with that, I always stick jack stands and/or my huge floor jack under the side(s) of the car also just in case..........you can never be too safe while laying under 3,000lbs of steel.......

Exactly! Let the law of natural selection take its course; think of it as a bit of chlorine for the genetic pool...
