I have a 2002 and am taking it for a Transmission service (I do most service myself, but not this). The quick lube place I considered uses Dextron 4. My regular mechanic said he is not sure why they use that, but does not think it is the right choice. Anyone have any thoughts?

What does your owners manual say?

Correction:
I have since learned that M V is NOT Mercon V - there are other posts here that support this

I believe my 08 rec's "M V" - which I believe is (Ford) Mercon V. Given Mazda's relationship with Ford, I'd think that you could use any Mercon V approved ATF.

I'd strongly recommend against a quick lube/dealer that uses the cheapest no-name base ATF fluid they can find and tries to add a snake oil additive that will "magically" turn the fluid into the desired spec fluid.

I plan to change to Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF shortly. I find it awfully weird that Mazda has no scheduled ATF change interval for my 08 - as if they are claiming fill-for-life ATF fluid...
