I bought a 2.0 engine from a japanese importer. It looked like the one I took out, except the exhaust manifold was a dual exhaust. the intake was missing. the valve cover was different. and the upper oil pan was different. It was stamped FS-1

I have the engine installed and running. I'm getting 30+ mpg. sometimes I get a ping noise like detonation, but it could be the exhaust pipe. I'm wondering if I have the fs-ze engine.

it may be FS-ZE engine...
No way of telling without seeing the intake manifold. The FS-ZE intake manifold has an extra plastic resonator box on top, plugged into that blank on the runners.

run some 91+ octane fuel and tell us what happens to the ping then

well if it was fsze Id think youd notice the bump in hp. Its like 170 right?

if he is getting audible ping or knock he's not going to be seeing any power gain and doing damage to the engine.

i guess that is true. Ken, on a side note. You told me i could use my really old gc. I think i lost it. Thanks for being leniant with me on the expiration though.

The engine was advertised as a late model 2.0 1998-2002 626 engine. I was concerned because they were also selling a 1.8 as a direct replacement also. I wanted a 2.0 and as far as I could tell the fs-1 casting # was the same on my engine. the dual exhaust manifold looked good also. maybe better performance. the compression was checked at 170-175 psi. they had 3 to choose from, looking at the cam though the oil fill hole it had a lot less wear than my 84,000 mile engine. It has been running for 6 months now and no problems. I tried to make it ping today but couldn't. regular unleaded.
Looks like I have the FS-ZE engine. I did some more reading about the cam. Mine is stamped FSH9 on the intake. FSD7 on the exhaust. I have about 4,000 miles on this engine since the install. I got 34 MPG on the last tank. Occasionally I get the ping going uphill or pulling hard in 2cd. I live at 6300 ft. and I tried premium fuel, still pings once in a while. I'm trying seafoam today, see if that helps.
these are the spark plugs that came with the engine from Japan. NGK ZFR5F 11 might be originals
