is it really worth buying a fmic considering i already have an aftermarket smic that is the same size as an fmic and i could just turn sideways and get the hard piping for it now?

depends on your goals. if you're looking to get past 225whp and run 10psi, then a fmic will be more efficient.

if you're looking for 200whp an upgraded smic will be good enough

FMIC's look so bad ass, and are close to the same price. You can get the altered customs fmic for 390 plus a 40 dollar intake and to me that is a freaking steal. get a fmic.

just to add to this, I have a SMIC now, works great at 8psi, but I am planning on up it to 9.5ish-10psi this summer

I wish I had seen, (if they even made them then) the altered customs kits before, would have bought that in a second! but I got the weaponR hardpipe kit with CAI and upgraded SMIC, bought about $150-200 worth of couplers and T-bolt clamps for the kit, and when I had a guy "try" to weld the flange on for the BOV on the cold pipe, he F*cked up.. badd, so I had to spend $150 to get WeaponR to fix/reweld the section of the pipe, and since I have waited almost a year before contacting the guy again that screwed up my pipe in the first place, I think it might be too late, not sure.. but anyways my point is that I have spent a lot of money on the SMIC kit so far and I am reluctant to switch, I have a SRI around that I could use, and I guess I could sell my kit to someone, but my main question is, at about 10psi, what are the differences between the smic and altered customs FMIC kits for power, power band (any lag at all?) and what do you guys think the whp gain would be by just switching kits.. also I know that the consistency of runs would be better with a FMIC, but at 10psi instead of 8psi, how big of a drop is there with any issues of heatsoak for a SMIC?

I know these topics about FMIC vs SMIC are wayyyyy over done and I have read most of them, but they always just end up saying a lot of it is personal preference, your set up, hp goals, and that you will get better top end with FMIC, but nothing about the immediate changes when switching at say.. 10psi, and the full power band (I would like to have the general power band that I have with the SMIC at 8psi, just more powerful, would FMIC solve this, I always want more hp, but it is a matter of money/placement of that power and benefit gains vs smic? (I plan to build my engine in another 50k miles or so.. something like that, and will get an FMIC then, but at the price I just saw, it is hard to resist now, and at 10psi I don't want my SMIC crapping out/letting me down when I'm driving)

thanks, figured I would get what I wanted out now while there is a thread about it, instead bringing up an old thread or posting a new one later

Couldnt have said it better myself. I have been running the altered customs for 3k miles now and it is awesome. No real turbo lag, and the best part is I can get off the freeway after a spirited drive and still have the same consistent power.
Srry speed I dont have any proven gains but I can tell you that at 8psi the altered customs FMIC is awesome! And I can always up the boost and only have to worry about zoom zoom boom:)

thanks for the input, did you happen to have an upgraded SMIC before then by any chance?. don't really need proven gains, because I know not may if any people are going to have it, but gains as in, you can feel the difference, if any

seems like you have a lot invested in your smic setup. i'd keep it unless you really want that fmic. i think the smic will be fine for your goals

ya, if the SMIC,CAI,hardpipes hadn't been the first thing I got for the car (all at once too, and the FMIC setup scared me a little, since this was my first car I did anything mod related other than sound system to) I would have gone for this, but oh well, and after looking at the FMIC setup for that kit, with the routing of the piping going everywhere, I think I am going to at the least, keep my setup this summer, and see how it does at higher boost

-I am really trying to think of ways to create an "air damn" or really just a lip that would funnel the air that is hitting the corner of the SMIC, to hit the whole smic, and kinda scoop the air upwords, there was a thread about doing this a while back, but no one ventured to do it, seeing as that I won't have much to spend on this summer for mods since I did pretty much all of that last summer lol, I'm gonna try to get something like this working, if anything I will attempt to get some help from someone to actually fabricate it.. who knows, could be something that really works well

thanks for the input, and if anyone else has more, feel free, no need to end it now, more knowledge is never bad!

-also I figure my brother is getting his engine put in the MSP he just bought (my engine from old car) and the car has FMIC,big ass forged cams, pulleys,T3/T4 turbo, ect.. so if anything I can have fun driving that car when I want haha.. I might just keep my car more conservative until the engine blows and I build it, and save up for another car for a platform where I can really get big power that I would want and keep my car sexy looking and fun DD lol

No I was running the stock SMIC before, so a big increase for me! The main gain is the smile on my face when I laugh at heatsoak! Been on a couple long cruises and still haven't had any issues with heatsoak, and my gas mileage is better:)

lol nice, ya i didn't get any heatsoak last summer, or only once actually when it was about 95 out and I had 2 friends in the car and he wanted the A/C on and was blasting it... killed my turbo lol
