Never heard of such!!! Quite weird IMHO, But try to reset your ECU for now and see where that gets you.

Yeah I know the dealership told him to reset the ECU. However I have my doubts that will do anything other then lose the presets ont he radio.

You gotta start somewhere you know Lol, But if that doesnt work I would say take out the tach and check all the connections, then if all else fails.... check speed sensor.

Ugh, I was suppose to get this car a week ago, everything finally gets done with financing/them replacing the o2 sensors, i get in the car and boom this happens, i hope its an easy fix and I can pick up the car tomorrow...

Im purchasing from a small dealership, they were dumb founded, they said there going to take it to a mazda dealership first thing in the morning, hoping i can find a solution though to save time/get this car quicker before the mazda dealership hogs my car for the weekend :(

They took out the tach and reset it, it worked fine for a few miles and started going backwards again

Might be a faughty tach, go to a junk yard, pick up any 99+ Protege tach, and see how taht works.

I'm thinking somethign is hooked up backwards but even then thats a far fetch at best.... I do not think you can even hook up the speed sensor backwards...

Wayne does the speedo go backwards to? lol

haha that is so odd. Let it take a couple thousand miles off, then take it in.

lol but seriously swapping in another tach to test it would be a good idea.. hopefully he doesnt get screwed with a none msp tach.

Outlawstar98

Well if they give him a non-MSP tach, he would (if i was him) take 1 grand off the price because its goign to be hard to find, mainly at 300$+ for it from some junk yards, and dealer.... is like WOW!

I was hoping there was just a easy fix to this or it was a common problem that had an easy solution, but i guess ill just wait an extra few days for my car, maybe theyll fix it tom, and ill get lucky considering its may 1st nd a start of a new month nd april was horrible to me...

Edit: Oh and if it matters, they re-set the tac and it worked perfect for a couple of miles than did it again... ugh

hm... then it might either be ECU or sensor issue.

Do you mean odometer?? I just don't see how the tach could go backwards.

they did a ecu reset, the tac is now working, although they wanted to double check so they took it to the mazda dealership, after they spend 80 dollars on a diagonitic fee, they found out they needed a new cluster which for the maszdaspeed protege is apparently 550 dollars... i bet they wish they never double checked now lol, but im off to go pick up the car and just hope the tac works till i get the new cluster in

When I take the guage cluster apart, and lift up the needle back over the stopper, once i hit 4-6 rpm's (number wise) it flips over. loose spring or something maybe? no idea im lost...

here's my .02.....

i had a ford escort ZX2 and a Spec V sentra...both started doing the same thing....come to find out...my regulator in my alternator was bad....the tach was the first thing to start acting weird....until i found the problem (by blowing up the battery, I don't suggest this...battery acid got everywhere on the ZX2) even the windshield wipers would start up by themselves...i was basically over loading the electrical system....don't know if that's the problem...but looks JUST like what both of my cars where doing.

hope you figure it out

haha, all n00bs (including dealer)

read page 09-22-4 in the 2003 Protege shop manual... easy fix

but make the used car dealer buy you a new cluster anyway so you can sell it to someone else/keep it (laugh)

jack the car up and look underneath the tranny for a plug right by ur downpipe/midpipe...that is ur speed sensor...check to make sure that the wires aren't corroded or split or anything....if the speed sensor is good then i don't know what u can do

You think that's all it is? Would be an easy fix if that's what it is though. I wonder if the "thing" they tell you to replace only controls the tach, you'd think it would serve another purpose. It states on page 09-21-3 that if it's bad the malfunction indicator lamp would illuminate.

Are there any check engine lights on in your car eniN6?
