View Full Version : MSP Exhaust Options?

Hey guys,
I have an 03' black mica mazdaspeed protege and was considering buying a nice souding/looking turbo-back exhaust system. I want the exhaust to sound decent, not ricey. Also, I would like the exahust's cat back to be diagonally angled. I.e. not an exhaust cat-back going straight back. Money is not an option.
Which ones do you prefer most? I was looking at either Vibrant or Corksport...Please share prices and links to those exahust systems. (Videos would be nice too if other than youtube). Also, what horsepower numbers do people typically gain? I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks guys,
-Randy (Pasadena, MD area).

dude search around the msp section a bit there are tons of threads on exhaust options.
fyi, the vibrant is NOT a turboback
the only 2 true turbo back systems are ghl and ion.

Only turbobacks that are FULL/Real turbobacks are the GHL and ION, which both are not made anymore, but both are GREAT exhausts!!

because there are only 2500 MSPs (- all the crashed ones). So there is no market. We are lucky anyone is making parts for us.

Well that's not true. The point your making is correct, but there were more than 2500 MSPs produced.
(1,750 Black/Orange (2003) and 2,750 Yellow/Titanium/Blue/Silver (2003.5/7))

ANd GHL went out of business because of economy, and ION was actually not making the exhaust, they mainly contracted the exhaust systems to a manufacture in Europe somewhere what i belive. And I think ION went down, or the person who made them for them. It has nothing to do with the MSP at all.

hey i just bought a vibrant turboback exhaust and it sounds amazing. and it is definitely turboback i dont know the difference between a real one or a fake turboback.

FULL Turboback includes piping to the actual turbo, most exhausts only go to the j pipe.

ION performance scammed people here, you may as well throw your money away and not get your exhaust.

Vibrant most def a good set-up but you would be even happier when you add a full 3" downpipe.....

A ported and extrude honed stock downpipe will work just fine for you unless you plan on putting down huge numbers. In which case you will be replacing most everything anyway. You should also get it ceramic coated while you have it uninstalled.
If you must have something aftermarket, Corksport makes the most popular tubular downpipe. It is prone to cracking, though. Do some research and see what works best for you. :)

Is there any noticable performance difference from a dp back to jpipe back setup?

i wish they wouldn't advertise it like it is on PG. If i had not joined here i would have thought it really was a turbo back.

its advertised everywhere as a turbo back... which is really quite unfortunate...

I am planning on putting 3" exhaust on my P5 when I get my turbo kit together... The company I work for is a vibrant dealer so I will get a smokin' deal... My question is; what mods will I have to do to it to make it fit the P5? I had a guy tell me that the exhaust on my car is longer than on a msp... Does anyone know if that's true?
Wagonbacker9
06-16-2009, 07:59 PM
shorten it by about 6" in the axel back section. the "guy" had it backwards.

Thanks... I kinda figured a sedan with a trunk would be longer than a hatch back... That's the whole reason for the hatch; shorter rear but taller cargo room...
My next follow up question! All the bends are the same... Msp and mp5???
yup, its just the axelback thats different, post-bendage. and of course the turbo end of the msp when compared to a regular p5... but you already know that.

Yeah... I'm a little worried about what I read earlier in the thread about the vibrant slimming down to 2.5 where the Jpipe meets... I guess I'll just have to ask them.
Thanks for all your help guys...
I figure I've hit the jackpot on this thread, and I've jacked it well enough... Has anyone seen a thread with a good pic of a custom 3" downpipe? I looked at one on here for 'mp3-79bronco's build thread... His pipe size is different but that doesn't matter... I'm just trying to get a good idea of what my welder should be doing for a finished product...

The Corksport exhaust is j-pipe back, and they also sell a S + J pipe combo, which would complete the full turboback.

theres not really an option as the only commercially available DP is 2.4", and the stock is less than that. the bolt pattern is simply not big enough to accomodate a 3" pipe. to go full 3" you have to go with a custom downpipe. there is one in development that would be available for a GB, but it appears to be stalled.

Money is not an option.
I'm assuming you mean "money is not an issue"?
Wagonbacker9

if money isn't an issue, get a custom DP developed.... then get AMM status here, and start selling them. you'll make back your money I guarantee it.

I don't know about how lucrative it would be seeing that all product would come from canada... Nobody wants to ship used junk to me let alone buy a fabricated product and have it shipped to them...
I tell ya, my dad always said we are american as most of our recent ancestors came from down there... I just want this crappy border to disolve so I can have stuff for the same price... No hassles involved...
I'll repose my big question... What is needed to make a custom DP successful? Straight with a couple serious bends? Curvy with wide arcs? I know the biggest thing is fitment in that space...

if someone developed one up there, then YOU wouldn't have to pay heavy duties to get one from US. lol
I hate the corksport design... too many points of failure... 2 hard tight (somehow free-flowing bends) and squeezed into a tight space... integrated S and J pipes together in ONE piece is my ideal setup.
