I went to go look at a used 03 msp because im thinking of getting one. Everything looked great except for when i popped the hood there was whitish green powder everywhere. It looked like it came from the battery but it was everywhere. What does this mean for me? Any problems could arise or simply clean it?

Engine fire and someone got the fire extinguisher in there. Just kidding, that could be anything, more than likely it is just a shit ton of Alum oxidation power, are you in a cold snowy area?

My engine bay gets pretty well coated with salt from the roads each winter.

Then again we could be looking at a serious addiction here, you might market some of that. How does it taste? JK

Engine fire and someone got the fire extinguisher in there. This might actually be quite the correct answer depending on how much is there and how widespread it is in the engine bay.

Now....Just because there may have been a fire...It might have been a single wire at a minimum which might have been nothing to repair....and if you have ever set off an extinguisher....that stuff goes into places you dont even know exists when it comes time to clean.

So maybe there was something....or even one was discharged close to it...like in a garage....I am sure that could do it as well.

Yea i live in a cold/snowy/rainy area. Seattle washington. So i called him up and asked him about it, he said he had left the country for five months and the car was suppose to be driven my a friend. The friend did not drive it so when he came back the car had to be jump started and after that no problems. This some how led to the crap everywhere... can someone explain that?? Thanks for the help.

It might be the alum just oxidizing, some old motors that come out of cars that have been sitting for a while develope this white powder on them its not really a bad thing.

If it's what I think it is it's from the battery. My battery is somehow grounding to my strut tower bar and it's causing the strut tower bar to oxidize and create the white powder.

You would think that it would be localized around the battery..... +1 for fire extinguisher.

The oxidation gets everywhere. It's super brittle and the slightest breathe spreads it out. Something tells me that if there was a fire there would be several other obvious indications...

It cam from the battery. I called a mechanic and he told me that it was sulfuric acid spewed from the battery all over the place that spread from fumes from gasoline?? He advised me to walk away because it could eat away at the parts. And that was the only msp in my area... :(
