Well I've just spent an hour searching through old threads and posts on the subject of oil changes for an 05 2.3 Mazda 3 hatch and some questions have now been brought up.

First: I was reading on a post that some oil filters need a special tool to get them on/off and only the mazda dealer has that? is this true? If it is what is the way around this so you can do it yourself?

Second: This might go with the first question but I read there was some type of conversion to do as far as the oil filter is concerned. If so what is the conversion?

Now some just simple recommendation questions.

What type of oil filter is recommended?

What type of oil would be best? And is it better to put in the recommended 5W30 or go to 10W30?

I'm sorry for being such a n00b with all of this, this is really my first time changing the oil on this car, and it's all a little unfamiliar for me, so any help is much appreciated. Thank you once again for putting up with me.

your facts are a little off.

there is a filter cup to remove the cartridge filter housing that our cars come with stock. you can purchase these filter cups from many different places
the conversion is to switch to the 2.0 filter. this consists of using the 2.0 cartridge housing and a standard spin on oil filter.

the recomended oil for our cars is 5w20, not 5w30. and the oil capacity is 4.3L sorry i'm canadian i don;t know how many quarts that is.

For the USA owners I read it is 4.3 Qts. And I recently just used Mobil 1 5W20 Synthetic! LOVE IT!

You can pick up the oil filter removal tool from Harborfrieght.com snap on and tool or NApa auto parts place. The 2.3 take 4.5 quarts and get your oil filter from the dealer the o-ring it brings is a better quality than the after markets.

you would be mistaken. The 20 is for the regular 3. The MS3 need 30
