I have a 2008 and the paint started peeling off the back hatch. The funny part is that under the paint it is chrome. I don't believe that it is really paint but a giant sticker. I have a picture and have looked at others with the same issue.

Weird, what's the discoloration just above the Mazda symbol? Is that just the camera or a glare?

Probably a decal, or shrink wrap. Paint wouldn't stick to chrome. Weird way to make that extra strip of chrome. Why not leave the entire thing chrome?
Maybe you can peel the whole thing off and have a fully chrome trim panel.

Just edited photo label out before posting....not a defect.

Here blkcx9. I replaced your edit with a nice fluffy cloud, in case you want to show this again.

Did you have any luck with the dealer?

I noticed this happening inside the Mazda circle logo. Chrome underneath.

I took this photo while I was out driving one day .. before I was in the market for a 3 row vehicle. The intention was to make fun of a Mazda for having such poor build quality. And now I'm an owner of a CX-9 as well. The irony.

wholly mother of gawd that is pitiful. Not so much the paint issue but rather the person driving around with it and not getting it fixed. That peeling did not happen in a day.

What's actually funny was I thought the chrome was normal and it actually peeled off from the piece.
When in fact, the chrome was underneath the paint!
I guess Mazda really put the money where it matters instead of something superfluous like a trim piece on a $42K MSRP vehicle. I still can't get over that unplug hole for the rear backlight washer.
The front chrome pieces are already pitting from driving on the highway.
