View Full Version : GI - GB: MSP (MP3?) replacement rear emblems

What I'm looking at making is a plate to replace the "Protege" emblem on your Mazdaspeed Protege, I may be able to get a design together for the MP3 guys as well. I'm adding a picture of what I'm basically using for inspiration, however I am open to suggestions on the mounting solution and layout. My thought was to make something somewhat larger than pictured here (Borrowed from Slotege's GB):

I'm in NO hurry to make this happen, so as long as it takes to generate some interest and come to a consensus on a design is fine by me. I have a local engraver I've dealt with for years, but I'm not sure if he does acid etching or anything fancy like that, I may have to source this from somewhere else.
Disclaimer: This is a GI thread only, NO money will be changing hands for quite some time and until AMM status is granted by Mod/Admin.
Thanks for looking, if this doesn't go through, I won't be heart broken... but it was an idea I had, so I thought I'd see about making it happen.
While I'm at it, I will talk to the engraver I end up using about putting together some smaller plates for those of you who missed out on Slotege's GB and may still be interested.

word... you know I'm in, but you were talking about useing ahesive in the other thread... I went out and looked at the trunk, and lined up the plate I bought with Slotege's GB with the holes in the trunk, and theres that slight ben in the midle of the trunk... an then I thought... maybe use a pop rivet o a small bolt and nut to hold in place...

yeah, mounting solution is definitely negociable... I'm more than open to suggestions on how we would like this done.

well, if you cant find a place that does acid treating I may have a solution, we use black powder coat at work, and also Blue, Yellow, and green, all Colman colors. and if any one wants theres powder coated, I'd be happy to do it, of coarse Id have to try it out on one before I go ahead and try it on one that some one has paid for just in case it doesnt work.

You're now outside my realm of knowledge. would we cut and powdercoat first, and then send them out to get acid treated with the specified design?

no... the acid treating is how you get that black look on metal. it bonds to the metal better than powder coating. it's harder to chip, but it can be pricey... powder coating is an alterative to acid treating, I was just saying it was an option since I can get it cheap.

I believe it would be difficult to powder coat and get clean lines for the lettering... I believe I'd call that a last resort. The engraver I know may have his own acid treater, or be able to put me in contact with one... anyone else with input on design, I'm more than happy to hear it!

I agree, I wouldnt be able to get any really good definition on the lettering, Id only be able to paint the background.

I would be all in if we could get it to look like the stock MP3 badge just numbered like the MSP sample. I know that would be more complicated but i think it would look cleaner.

I'd actually thought of mimicking that badge with "MSP"... Basically I'd like to try to make whatever we can generate interest in...

generate some interest in it and I'll actually take the time to look into it. As of now, its not a GB... lol wonder if the mods would have an issue with me making 4 of something and selling em off without status...
GiJoe
05-05-2009, 12:39 PM
lol I think the mods would have a problem with me generating interest in an ongoing GI... Hopefully GB...

if I'm making these, a scaled down version would likely be doable... just need to generate worth while interest before I'm gonna spend the time.
