View Full Version : GI - LED lighting kits for Protege

First off this is just a gauging interest thread i have pmed antoine about possible AMM status but before i fully go ahead with that i wanted to check if there was any interest in this.

I am looking at putting together a full kit to replace all the exterior bulbs on the protege with LED bulbs. LED's typically last longer, are brighter, and in my opinion look better than normal filament type bulbs. If anybody has seen the new Lexus's among other high end vehicles and noticed the ultra white tag bulbs they now have those are LED's. Like stated this kit would replace all exterior bulbs on the car.

For now i am only offering this on protege5's (its the only car available to me at the moment besides my rx7) and protege sedans as long as all the bulbs are the same besides the high/low beam bulbs (if someone wouldn't mind confirming this i would appreciate it)

For pricing expect in the $80-$100 shipped range for all the bulbs i will have a better idea on price after tomorrow. Once again i am not accepting any money at this time or making any deals just trying to see if this is worth my time or not.

i tried the led brake bulbs and they SUCKED!! i needed a brighter bulb since i tinted my tails, and i couldnt even see these when i hit the brakes, but when i had the regular ones in there they lit up decently

interested...however, i priced together a kit for my p5 including the dome lights, plate lights, map lights, and leds for the gauges, it was like 48 bucks.

You'd want an hid kit for that, not led bulbs.

You may want to consider chrome bulbs for certain parts as LED bulbs aren't very bright in certain applications as has been mentioned.
I so love my interior lighting, my plate bulbs, my trunk lighting and the chrome bulbs I've bought over the last couple of years though :)

I've seen those chrome bulbs but what do they do?

Cleans it up quite nicely, while keeping the stock amount of light output (or very close to it)

Depends on the bulb. I have amber bulbs, so it comes out amber ;)

x2 Few questions that i asked myself, are these LED's of good quality?,not the crap we sell at my job.(Advance Auto).

Nonetheless, sounds like a good idea. Im interested. :D

I had the LED Brake lights in my MSP w/ LED's that faced out and in... to reflect off of the tail light housing... they worked really well. I got the red color. I currently have LED turn bulbs in the back of my car and on the side markers... they are not as bright as stock.

Well good news and bad news. Got some of the bulbs to test out today and they look awesome however the turn signal bulbs are fast blinking. I need to check and see if they offer a bulb that has the built in resistance so it doesn't do that.

Yeah the easiest thing to do is wire up a stock bulb somewhere hidden.

Ohh I know either that or just wire in a couple ohm resistor but if I am going to end up selling this as a kit I would rather make this a plug and play affair even if the bulbs cost a little more.

And I am with you dj dub I actually don't mind the fast blink myself however my gf just about killed me in the 5min drive we just took after I installed the bulbs in her p5.

Also just got the tag bulbs in...they look and fit great can't wait to see them at night. I will have pics of the tag bulbs in the p5 and some of the other bulbs in my rx7 tonight.

sub, would like to maintain the slow blinker though.... as well as factory output levels. would this include the blinker on the fender?

Here's a shot of white LED's compared to stockers

Yes this would be the fender bulb as well. I don't think that the fender bulb would have an effect on the speed though. Gotta test it out first

you'll need to get resistors and solder them inline somewhere

I don't think they make LED's with resistors built in (at least not with keeping this kit cheap)

Yeah the company I am going through sells the load resistors seperatly and you would need one per light (total of 4) just not sure with adding them the entire kit would be worth it especially since it would take a little more skill than just popping in some bulbs

mx-p5
04-15-2009, 03:03 PM

Make a regular plug-n-play kit and an "advanced" kit with the resistors.

04-15-2009, 03:08 PM
Can't you get a heavy duty flasher to fix it? That would be easier than soldering and probably cheaper than resistors too.

I'm thinking I may just go with the sylvania bulbs that are clear and light up amber instead... my car came with clear front bulbs, and next to the HIDs they look yellow, but the rears in amber aren't working for me...

GiJoe
04-15-2009, 03:30 PM

Yeah those are chrome coated bulbs and infact they are offered to me as well

What I may do is what was suggested. Make several different kits, one with chrome signal bulbs, one with all leds, and one with all leds and resistors.

they make both a chromed looking bulb and one thats essentially clear (has a little of a rainbow hue to it)... I'd go for the clear bulb myself...

So here is the question does anybody even make a heavy duty flasher for a protege?

Shadow102
04-15-2009, 04:48 PM
Well just pulled the protege flasher and that's probably not going to work since its not really a relay its a full integrated circuit

what size bulbs goes in the tag Light for a MSP? I looked it up on Sylvania and they called out a 3652 ....but when I took the light out (socket), I couldnt get the bulb out... When I look up the pic of this bulb, looks like 194 style bulb to me....

hows this kit coming? I am very interested, I would like to be able to buy everything one shot. and not buy from different places.

Shadow102
04-19-2009, 09:22 AM
Not sure the number on the tag light bulbs, its the same bulb used in the side marker on the fender and you can use the same bulb in the reverse light (the stock reverse bulb is a larger version with the same base)

The kit is coming along I should be able to offer the kit for around $75 shipped to your door and it will do both the sedan and p5 (can someone confirm for me there is only three bulbs in the sedan taillight?) and that's for all led's with fast blinkers. To include the resistors would be $90 shipped to your door. I still need to pick up a set of brake light bulbs and check their chrome bulb selection before I officially go ahead with this. I would like to make sure the brakes put out enough light in the protege housing. They work awesome so far in my rx7 and put out more than enough light.

Ohh and for whoever referenced the advance autoparts bulbs...not only are those bulbs stupid expensive but they are junk. Looking at them they only have a set of led's pointing straight out which doesn't help the reflective surface the bulbs I have include two circular rows of led's in the base to shine outward on to the reflecting surface...I think its a total of 32 or so led's per large bulb.

Once again I am still awaiting antiones answer on whether or not this will first off conflict with my moderator status of being a amm as well so even though I almost have solid prices I still cannot receive any money from anybody.

Hoen is the shit. pretty much the standard in europe. people love their bulbs/leds best Xeon looking halogen bulbs out there, has the whitest light, looking exactly like xenon and has the highest lumen output compared to the other xenon looking halogen bulbs out there.

http://www.hoen-usa.com/city2.htm

put those LEDs on my license plate insead of the acual plate ones

http://www.hoen-usa.com/licenseplate.htm

the city bulbs IMO look whiter and better. it put the mil-spec LEDs in the map lights inside, both are freakin money. i'll try to get pics when i get home this weekend

imports go by the euro designation which is W5W, but it's the same physical size bulb as a 194/168 except the W5W is 5watts and the 194/168 is like 2.2Watts so the W5W bulbs are brighter. i put W5W in the side markers.

Ok a little update guys took some crappy cell phone pics of the lights installed i will have some of the rear of my RX7 tonight. So far the pictures are the LED's in the reverse lights of a p5, the front turnsignals in my rx7 and a comparison of a stock and LED bulb in the tag lights.

Also got confirmation that i can be a mod and AMM so i will be sending in my AMM application hopefully tonight and get the ball rolling

Ok guys got the pics and got a vid to show the brightness/instant on of the LEDs. The RX7 has LED's in the 4 red lights and tag lights (in the vid you can see the difference of the LED vs Regular bulb with the third brake light)
The protege5 has the tag lights and reverse lights. You can also see the brightness against the garage door of my front ambers in the rx7
