Is 16" the smallest wheel size you can fit on the Mazda 5? I have 15" winter tires that I'd prefer not to get rid of and just remount them on 5x114.5 steelies but I looked at a GS at the dealership and it seem that even the 16s barely cleared the brake calipers.

16'' is definately the smallest size you can put on a M5 because of the brake caliper clearance. I'm running Protege5 alloy wheels for winter but a lot of folks get the 16'' steelies. Some people even go in 17'' but for winter its kind of waste of money. You better get better quality in 16 rather than el cheapo brand in 17'' (if any exist).

Yea, oh well it's a good excuse for me to try out the Michelin Xi2s next winter. :) I used Yokohama iG20s this winter. Great tires for the money especially on ice but I think the Xi2s will be even better.

But yah for sure, in the winter, the narrower the tire and the thicker and softer the sidewall the better, although there's gonna be less zoom zoom.
