I was messin around, launching my car the other day, and I shifted from 2nd and 3rd (at around 5000 rmp)..and it wasn't gaining much speed, it was just reving while the clutch was engaged and not goin anywhere.. and so i let of the gas and just drove normal... After this it smelt like burnt plastic, or metal on metall; and it was a fairly strong smell.
The next morning the smell was gone, unless I got on it just a little bit (like 2nd to 4000 rpm) the smell came back. Could it be the clutch, or some fluid maybe? there is nothing visually wrong in the engine bay and it drive ok under easy driving.
Also: I am going in to get 25K mile check-up and hopefully the Clutch TSB done...so if it is the clutch hopeflly i'm getting a new one. But For warranty reasons do i need to remove my BOV or CAI for the check-up?
Thanks for the help, Sorry if anything is unclear.

hopefully you need a clutch and they deny your warranty.

The clutch warranty is only 10k miles. It is cheaper to buy an aftermarket clutch and flywheel then get the OEM stuff from the dealer.

Agreed, i believe Ken @ PG quoted a spec stage 2+ with the lightened fidanza flywheel for 990 shipped. ACT are still weeks out.

Well I hoping I don't need a new clutch..the car feels fine. And I'm going in to get the TypeA clutch fixed...So if they do that I get a new one for free.. If they deny and my clutch is bad, they I will get an aftermarket one...but we will see.. Thanks for the help

You don't need a new clutch if you just burned it some and its driving fine now. I did a few times learning how to launch this thing at Marion. Anyway, which dealer you going to?? If your taking it to IPAC, they're pretty mod friendly, especially if you get Mark. If you take it to Northstar Mazda, they inspect pretty closely for mods and try to to find any excuse not to do something.

Well I was planning on going to North park because that is where I bought it...Does it matter where I go for the 25k check-up...Because if IPAC doesn't care too much about mods(intake and bov) and it saves me having to put instock parts I will go there for sure.
Thanks for the help

They won't say anything for regular service at north park for the mods, they might bring it up if you are getting it checked out for the TSB though. But it doesn't hurt anything to try! If they tell you no, then you can just try back at Ipac. I usually get great service from IPAC though... doesn't hurt that the service advisor is a member of the forum here either.

Thanks for the help...I'll just leave my mods on, go in for the 25k checkup at North Park and ask about the TSB...If they say no I will remove the mods and they deny the TSB, I'll go to IPAC...
Did you get the TSB done at IPAC? If so at how many miles?

I didn't get the TSB done, I had them look at it once at North Star, but they said my CPE wishbone mount was what was causing the odd shifting, and I don't really care enough to remove it and go try at IPAC. Maybe I'll try some other time. Oh, and North Star had no problem w/ my car having 28k and checking it for the TSB, they told me as long as it was still within the regular factory warranty it was ok.

Yup, I got new clutch under the TSB! I got lucky, I don't have to spend 1600 for a new clutch!

i just bought a mazdaspeed 6 today and it is my first manual car it rev'd up to about 2500 or 3000 and i was slow to get it in gear and it started smelling very strong as described above.. but my car had no loss of power of anything like that and it drove perfectly fine.. do i have anything to worry about?? i think im just being paranoid because it my first manual im not sure tho.. any thought or advice?? Thanks.

Just got my stock clutch replaced at dealer 2 months ago. Cost my ass 1300 dollars so take heed when launching the car... If burning smell persists, you will probably need a clutch in less than 5000 more miles.
