Ok so I was trying to figure out how to get some bass in the trunk and still have some space left. I came up with the idea to put 4 subs in the same box and hang it where the stock sub box goes. Mount 2 facing out of the trunk like normal but then mount 2 backwards (for lack of the correct term) and facing up. If anybody doesn't know what I'm talking about I made a drawing... I has skills?

The bottom drawing is what you would see when you open the trunk. Have any of you done this, or seen something similar? Is there any reason it wouldn't work? Would it sound good? I'm just afraid that the ones mounted regular and the ones mounted backwards would fight each other via the pressure and vaccume inside the box. Could someone that knows a lot about this stuff clarify please.

Also for those of you that have 4 6 1/2" speakers and 6x8s in the rear deck which channels did you hook them too? I'm guessing run the front doors and tweeters to the front and the rear doors and 6x8s to the back correct? Sorry this got kinda long but any help would be appriciated.

My guess would be that it would not work. Why don't you just stick with 2 higher end subs?

Cuz that's boring lol. I want something wicked.

it would probably work but you'ld have to wire the 2 rev mount subs opposite of the 2 reg so they are 180 off phase and hit the same way

U mean just switch the + and - on one pair? would it be better to split the box into 2 (left and right)?

I would partition the box, so that if you lose one sub, you don't end up having all 4 go due to reaching their physical limit. also, as mentioned, make sure you reverse the polarity of the 2 facing backwards, or bad things will happen.

Thanks guys keep the suggestions coming.

I don't know much about rev mounting subs never even seen a setup that used em except for mags and such.

you def wanna split the box into 2 chambers

and yeah that's what i meant

yeah like blow one or both subs....or just rip the box apart

its really no different, cept with a mixed setup like that, you reverse the polarity. do you know what kinda subs you're using? what displacement they need? what you're makin the box out of? got dimensions set in 2 directions (so you can set the 3rd to get the appropriate volume)?

No I just wanted to make sure the idea isn't retarded lol. I'll just use particle board or plywood for the box. I'm not a big fan of the plexiglass or the painted fiberglass stuff. When I get time I'm going to go to the local car audio store to get some more ideas and such.

Lets say each sub needs 1 cubic foot do I need a box with 2 cubic feet or 4 cubic feet? I mean can the reg and rev share displacement?

4... which is HUGE. what size sub are you thinking?

and if you're building it outa wood, MDF is what you need.

that would be badass to watch lol.

that would be badass to watch lol.
unless you built a shitty box, it would just overwork the hell out of the subs, and drastically shorten their lives.

May I suggest 1 baller ass sub and monster amp that would blow those four subs out the water?

I used to have 4 twelve's in my ES, got rid of them, put in 1 Kicker L7 with with a JL 500/1 amp, could flip quarters on the roof, it wasn't even all it could handle, when I got the MSP I moved it all over and redid the wiring and it was even cleaner sounding, unfortunatly all I saved was the sub and box before the MSP went up in flames, i'll be putting it in my Jeep with the 1000/1 Memphis Audio amp, think it'll be enough.

my JL 250/1 is the best mobile electronics money I could ever spend... i swear by those things.

Actually, I didn't have the JL, I had a TMA amp (Total Mobile Audio) 500/1, they are a JL baby company, cheap underated amps, the amp was actually 800/1, best amp I ever had! Used a Memphis for my mids and highs and couldn't have been happier, so i want to try the 1000/1 to pair to the L7

I'm thinking 2 10" and 2 12" or four 12" if for some reason it wouldn't work.

um... you're talking like a 200 lb (including subs) box.. and to fit 4 subs under the deck lid, it would sit on the floor... the box idea you have would work for 4 8"... MAYBE 4 10"... there is NO earthly reason you need 4 12's in an MSP.

bgibb68
04-02-2009, 05:01 PM
a box for 4 12s would be huge....i have 2 12" kenwoods and my box is 3.something cubic feet....it's a ll bigger cause i have it ported...2 12"s in the right box is all that's needed....i've knocked crap off my neighbors walls before when i was tuning it once

edit: i've also had a cop come to my house to tell me to turn it down cause he heard(felt) it from over 2 blocks

Yeah ur probably right I thought it could be a cool idea but i don't know. I'll go measure the trunk so I know what I have to work with.

well for that you need at least 3/4 mdf....and some 12"s non ported needs 1.5+ ft^3....more for ported unless you go with the shallow subs made for trucks and they need less space, but then they are dbl the price of reg subs

buy 2 good 12"s dvc and make a good ported box and wire them up 2 ohm and get a good amp.....trust me you'll be happy with that

lol I got a noise ticket in uptown Charlotte, when I asked the fuzz how far away they could hear me they said 3 1/2 blocks lol, 4 bicycle cops and two cop cars pulled me over because of it, which I don't think was nearly enough cops for a noise violation!!

no kidding! you're a mennace to society! they should lock you up! A cop told me he could hear me coming for a quarter mile on a county highway in my S-10.... 1 ported 10's which essentially filled the entire "extended" portion of the cab behind either seat.

The reason I was thinking 2 10s and 2 12s is cuz I've had em both and the 10s sound good but aren't loud and the 12s are the opposite. I know I don't need 4 subs but I want to do something unique with this car. And cuz setting off car alarms is fun.

if ya wanna cover all basis of sound....do 2 12" in a ported box....and do 6x9 for the good midrange

i like speed
04-02-2009, 11:46 PM
yeah a few minutes with a dremmel and the 6x8 holes could easily become 6x9s. Better selection of those too.
I'm going to measure my trunk before I decide what I'm going with... need to get the stuff out that's why I didn't do it today.
If I build the box myself who sells mdf? Lowes?

bgibb68
04-03-2009, 12:30 AM
yeah....lowes home depot.....

all ya need is a good saw to cut straight (table saw if ya have to cut angles)

wood glue the joining ends and then predrill and use a good screw

for the connectors, goto a local custom place and you can buy terminals that will seal it and then wire it.

let sit for a day or 2, now i put silicone along all the inside seams and let it sit for another day.

get a can of ruberized undercoating and spray the inside(outside unless you carpet, paint it, etc) let sit for a day or two

load it with subs

Yeah I've got wood tools so that's not a problem. Is mdf short for something or have a different name in the construction world? I've probably used it before just don't remember it being called that.

But is rubber coating better than the sound deadening material? Or use both?

just used the rubberized coating....plus it'll bond in the seams toand much easier to work with.....remember you'll be working through the 2 holes for the sub to do all the inside work

mdf=medium density fiberboard

that's about 3 times more dense than particle board.....(spank)

Appriciate the help man. I'll measure the trunk and go to the local audio store before I decide what to do.

One more thing... Is there any tweeters that replace the stock ones?
The stick-on ones are stoopid.

i don't know anything about the tweeters used......my p5 didn't come with them...and i have a set of 4way's up front and i have the highs turned down they are so 'big'.....but i'm sure the amp i have driving the door speakers helps that out

hmm I probably won't worry about the tweeters I was just wondering. I'll probably get more out of em with the system anyway cuz the power from the hu won't be used by the speakers.
