HELP! Car stalls when comming to a stop TRANNY STUCK?

Hi.. I have a 99 Protege 1.6L automatic with 91k on it.

When I come to a stop the car's rpms go really low and it has rough idle and the slower I go to a stop then the motor dies. IF i put it into Neutral the car will not stop. A mechanic friend of mine said the tranny is staying locked in a higher gear and that is causing it to stall.

Is there anything I can do? I am really worried about what I can do to fix this without bankrupting me.

i duno but i would think about checking the fuel pump. a friend of mines nissan was doing this an i think they told her to replace the fuel pump.
