MS6... I considered all the above well except the evo because I think they are ugly and the speed6 impressed me the most. The legacy was really nice inside and performed really well but I didnt like the looks of it from the outside. It was very plain and reminded me of an older camry. The wrx also a blast to drive but was very plain inside and way too many of them on the road. Now if I could do it over again I would still be driving my wrangler anxiously waiting for the new camaro SS...

Before I purchased I did weeks of research and put together multiple spreadsheets to compare all of those cars you mentioned (plust the Volvo S40, Audi A3 and A4). When you look at the overall performance, options, insurance and price the Speed6 comes out on top every time. If you go with the GT trim you basically end up with a rally type car with full leather, nav, climate control, traction control, heated seats, power seats, auto-defrosting mirrors, keyless entry, etc, etc. The list goes on and on.

My second choice after I did all my research and test drives was the S badged Audi A3, but it was $10k more than the Speed6 for the same level of options.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I personally think the MS6 is the best looking car out of the 4 you mentioned, although the Evo is a close second. I swear subaru's get uglier and uglier every year.

the 2009 wrx is cheaper, faster, has more awd ability than the MS6 (minus handling), and MUCH more room for improvement. an Evo 9 MR yes you can get them up to 600hp daily drivers, the new ones are hideous, my friend has a legacy spec b, but with my cobb intake and inlet, i know i rip him up and down and my car looks way better. getting the new WRX or EVO is worth the performance but not the looks.

I would stick with the MS6 since I use it to drive and not to race. I co-worker has an Evo. IMHO it was a tinny rattletrap that was so cramped that a mile-long trip was far from comfortable. Then again, I'm not exactly a small guy, and I don't have a need to try to have the fastest car around.

Not a fair question on this forum, but I could have bought any of those cars and I wasn't even looking for a car when I bought my Speed6. I was at the dealer to buy a part for my Miata when I walked into the showroom aqnd saw the Speed6. Remembering what I had read about it and the striking visual appeal, I said I want it, they rolled it out, I drove it for a bit, and worked the deal over the next week. I bought the car plus all the FSMs for the price I wanted to pay and the rest is all good.

In any case, I like Mazda engineering the best. The Speed6 is an adult hotrod where the others mentioned are "boyracers". The Legacy is closest to the Speed6 in utility, but the Subie is well, a Subie and I don't like the engineering or the overall styling/design. The Speed 6 does it for me, YMMV...

Comparing all those cars, the only other one I'd even come close to would be the Legacy, but it would have to be in Spec-B trim. The WRX and Evo are great and extremely capable cars, but I liked the subtle styling and changes that made the MS6 stand out from a regular 6. I went from a boy racer type car to something with a little more substance, and I'm happy with my choice.

When I was shopping for a car to replace my Protege, I also looked at the Bullitt Mustang, used CTS-Vs, 350Zs, and a few 6.0 GTOs, and settled on this.

Well given the situation i'm in (blown motor) i would personally choose none of the above. g37 sedan for me. I need 4 doors and once you do away with the chrome grill they are halfway decent looking. Plus it's a nissan, longevity is a given.

out of the four mentioned, i'd stick w/ the ms6. it's roomier than the evo and wrx and has the legacy beaten on the looks. i also considered the se-r altima, but was tired of front wheel drive.

if i could trade straight up i would CONSIDER a volvo s60-r. i'm a family guy and need the room. and hp. and awd. and a manual. and turbo. and suddlety. and possibley a dictionarey.(dunno)

I'm new but I recently purchased a 2006 Mazdaspeed 6. I've liked the car but really wasn't looking for one. The Black Cherry color really made me zero in a bit because in Baltimore I've never seen it. I've driven WRX's, Evo's but have never driven the Legacy. The Legacy looks are just ok but I would only truly consider the Spec-B, they are just so damn hard to find. I didn't choose the Evo due to popularity, although I own a '94 Civic (heavily modded), and what's more popular than that?? LOL. In any case, I liked the size of the Mazdaspeed. The WRX's an Evo's are a little smaller. All of this helped sway my decision. I did have a 2002 S4 Avant on hold but let it go because of the fear of maintenance costs. Once I drove the Mazdaspeed 6 it totally impressed me. Its very similar in stock feel to a stock Evo, yet a bit more refined. The styling is decent. At this point I would not have changed a thing. Hopefully in modding this car I can add power an not lose refinement, as I did with the Civic. The Civic reached a stage that made it unbearable for day to day drive - strictly seasonal.

1) legacy, so i can get my "grown-man" on. i try to be different when it comes to cars, the spec-b is rare and looks classy and very tune-able. i wouldnt go crazy with it though, just a nice drop on some rims and basic engine upgrades. most likely my next car.....

2) ms6, not because im a "loyal mazda guy" but it is overall a very appealing car and very close to the spec-b.

evo, wrx are everywhere these days but i would go with the wrx and then the evo.

No my fear is the engine reliablity, people have blown stock motors. I would like to have that suttle grown man look yet still have the power (400+) I like the Evo for its reliablity but i hate the racer boy look. So i know its hard to be on a mazda forum asking those questions but i'm trying.

If it's 400+ hp dreams you have, then you need to look elsewhere. I love my ms6 because it had a nice level of refinement, a respectable amount of power and all the features I wanted while staying within my price range. If you want to make bigger power without being shackled to the boy racer look then you may be better served with the legacy spec-b... or just bite the bullet (and cough up a lot of money) and score a used m5 (wow).

I know this is a difficult question to answer and perhaps a threadjack(sorry) but i dont understand why so much more power can be generated in STis and evos, when i compare the cars i see 4 cylinder, turbocharged, and awd, all three have this in common, i see the same capabilities mod wise, i just dont understand how people can easily tune evos to 400hp +, is there a more obvious answer to this question than i see?

The MZR found under the hood of the ms6 uses a completely different fuel system than the other cars mentioned. Cars like the evo and sti still use standard fuel injection and all the old tricks work just fine for making power. The MZR is direct injected and has a cam driven fuel pump. Basically, it's harder to squeeze more fuel out of this system since we don't have standard injectors we can swap out to get us that extra go juice needed to make bigger power. Also, nobody wants to mess with trying to work out new cams since we have a fuel pump attached to the end of it. I'm sure at some point people will start figuring out the magic formula to reliably pull big power out of the new DI engines that are starting to show up, but there's really no way to tell when that will be.

DISI is way to new of technology for the aftermarket to havve caught up, Gm is just now starting to put in some DI with the new 3.6 in the aura's outlooks, traverse, and so on. FoMoCo totally scraped the idea for their 09 models despite massive R&D, supposedly 10= will have them. And as far as i know Mazda is not putting di in any 10 models......Dead platform.....???

I really wanted an Legacy GT to replace my 04 STI, for something more livable as daily commuter car, but at the time, MS6s were going for so much cheaper I couldn't resist. Great car, but IMO, not trustworthy past warranty, as it's been to dealership too many times.
I know people could flame me, but just telling my opinion it like it is. This is unbaised. :)

I love my Speed 6 though, and no regrets. I just see it costing too much to own and maintain down the road. If I could afford to, I'd trade it in on a new STI hatchback, but not gonna happen unless I sell off my S2K.

Gonna miss this car though. :)

You must have a wednesday car. I got the started on Friday and finished on monday after too much saki on sunday night and the #3 rod torque machine operator took him a lil napski. These cars are hit or miss, but like many other cars out there its pretty much luck of the draw. Mine went to the dealer for the following, p/s pump, turbo, intermediate steering shaft, wireless comtrol module antenna, and lastly the #3 rod through the block where they voided my powertrain warranty, but my insurance took care of it. F*ck mazda NA.

clutch, flywheel, transfer case @ 33000miles, this is in direct correlation with my exgirlfriend borrowing my car for 4 hours, breaking down 3 towns over and me coming to rescue the smelliest car that ever smelled. for a month in stunk like clutch and oil. then 5k miles later my shit needed replacement but it never broke down and i didnt notice a thing until mazda told me.

I bought my MS6 from a dealership that sells both mazda and mitsubishi. I wasnt even looking for a new car.. just browsing around a bit one day. Stopped and got out to check out the ms6 cause I had always heard they were fast as hell. Salesman came out and says "thats one bad motor scooter your looking at" as he threw me the keys. So I drove it down the street.. came back..... wheeled and dealed....drove it home that night. It was love at first sight and drive.
