View Full Version : ms6 AWD launch
Well, this is my first AWD car and i love it. I am having some problems launching the car. I don't know if this normal for AWD cars. When i put it in 1st gear and rev the motor up to 4,500 rpm, the car would pull crazy fast. Once the car moves, it would have a short pause in 1st gear. It feels very wired. It seems that the power dies off quickly or something. Anyone have this problem???? Or am i'm launching wrong???

Don't. You're asking for trouble.

When are you feeling this loss of power? If it is after 5750rpm, its the engine's natural performance curve and happens to everyone. Its a pain in the ass, but its by Mazda's design. Otherwise, its a combination of DSC, the AWD system transferring power, and the natural studder of the engine.
So by turning the DSC off, i would be able to launch correctly?? I thought DSC was suppose to help w/ better traction.

It's AWD, unless you were putting down like 800+HP and can break all of your tires loose, this is not a car that you have to worry about wheel spin with. (Unless it's snowing (burnout)) TURN OFF THE DSC, and feather the hell outta the clutch. You can safely launch this car, but don't do it left and right unless you like fixing the components listed by others above.

ya put it at 4500-5000 and slip the clutch
Ok..That means that if i was to drag race @ the track, i would turn off the DSC to prevent breakage. What do you mean feather the clutch?? Rev up to about 4,500 rpm and slowly let the clutch out??? Sorry I'm a newbie to AWD... BTW Thanks for al the comments guy.

Feathering the clutch has nothing to do with AWD :). Sounds to me like your just bogging the car in 1st.
You cant just drop the clutch in this car. You have to ease off it. Not slowly but not too fast either.
Only way to get better is to practice and I suggest launching like at 3K rpm instead of 4500 when your just practicing. That way you wont fuck up anything or burn your clutch more than you have to. In this car you really shouldn't need to launch over 4K rpm. Wont make a difference in speed but it could damage your car.
Alrite..thanks for the help bro...I'll practice more..
You might want to invest in some engine and diff mounts if this is what you like to do with your car. As for the car dying on the high end, it may be the throttle plate closing again... you can fix that with an ECU flash.

Also look into a WOTbox. I have heard good things about these. Seems like it would be more accurate since you can set in the rpm to launch at. I agree with Sifu on the engine and differential mounts to get more power to the ground and also lessen the chance of breaking things :)

ms6z, it's tricky to launch this car properly, especially when you're trying not to damage anything. I went to the track a couple times last year, but still don't really have it down. Actually its even harder to do on the dragstrip with the sticky tar they lay down. You definitely need to feather though, don't dump it.

i dunno guys, ive never launched a car before this one, the 240sx was more of a peel out everytime i pressed the gas, but to me its really as easy as a double rev up to about 4500 and an evenly distrubuted lift of the clutch to an evenly increasing acceleration to WOT. at the same time! no one foot should complete the process without the other doing the same. also make sure you can do this in a ONE MISSISSIPPI otherwsie your car is gonna be smelly and everyone will know! lol.

Just pull the e-brake 2 clicks. You want even have to rev that high and the fronts will break loose ;)

I tried pulling up my e brake 2 clicks and it didn't work. It still launched in awd. Even went back and looked at the marks and sure enough there was 4 of em. Maybe I need to try another click...

I had a hard time getting the launch right at the strip, I still goof it up sometimes. The best way I've been able to get it is rev to around 4k and then just release the clutch the way you normally do when leaving a stop. No smell... no bogging, probably not the best launch but a good wait to practice until you can get a really good launch going. Thats what worked for me anyway.

Dude you have no idea how nice I am to my car. I've maybe launched my car 5 times since I had it counting the one time I tried the e brake trick. Launching is hard in this car and hard on the car. Anytime you have that much power hooking up that fast it's gonna be hard on something. Wether it's your clutch, your rear diff, or your axles. Something has to give. I've never even tried launching this car at the track just cause of the tar they put down and how much more grip there is than on the street. My advice don't do it to often unless you have the time and money to be replacing axles and diff mounts.
With that being said hold at 4- 4500 rpm and feather the clutch out. It's does feel pretty cool when you get a good launch. Puts you right back in your seat lol
