I'm new to Protege's, and have some questions.
I have a 2001 Protege ES2.0 with the manual tranny.
I'm currently running winter tires (185-65-R15) b/c i'm in Canada

My mileage is around 10L / 100 km.(23.5MPG) Is this normal?
My old Saturn was getting around 6l / 100 km. (39MPG)

I drive around 1000 km per week, so you can imagine that any gas savings would be welcome. I have to admit that during the past week I was driving pretty quick (140km/h) and my RPM's were in the 4000 range.
That seems really high seeing how my Saturn would've been below 3k RPM around the same speed.

My questions are:
1. Is this normal? Are all Protege's geared for city driving, and no high speed highway driving?
2. Is there anything I can do to get more mileage? (Other than the obvious drive slower?)
3. Are there any compatible tranny's that will give me a taller 5th gear?

they're geared that way.

slow down your driving. i think there's a 5th gear option for the car to swap out to.. i believe nsn has it. search the forums.

Awesome
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction... I found the NSN gear, and it might help me out a bit.
Are there any direct replacement manual transmissions? I don't know, maybe a like a Ford Probe tranny or a 626 tranny or anything that will bolt right up but has different ratios?

(And yes, i know, i've slowed down since last week... it was my first week owning the car...I had to try it out a bit...)

What?
You mean I actually have to work to find the answer?? lol

I appreciate the honesty though, too many people nowadays state everything as fact, even though the don't know what the **** they are talking about. Thanks for your help

I have a junk 1.6/5spd 99 protege that sat around for 6 mos. before i drove it...the first week it got 22mpg, but then it went up to 32-36 in 50/50 city/hwy driving in the winter, with gnarly winter tires...including running it for several minutes in 0f detroit winter weather to warm up...i just put all season radials on it, and the weather is now a little better, so i expect the mpg to go up...32 is around 70 on the hwy

for me for some reason my mpg is the worst.
i'm canadian so ill state this in litres and kilometres(sorry)

but to start off i would get around 625-650km on my 55L tank,

and recently have been getting only 400km on the same 55L.
no performance changes have been made to the engine.
this is 400km from when the pump trigger clicks, down to when the gas light is on and am burning fumes.

my engine light is on and gives me the damn EGR code, but is that really causing this? cause i doubt it would be that much of an impact.
