I just bought my 97 protege LX 3 weeks ago with 120K on it. after 2 days it threw a CEL. comes back as P0420 upper o2 sensor. i had advance get me a new one. it looked different but the old was a NTK and new was a bosch. Get it installed and plugged in and within 5 feet i get another CEL. comes back as P1195. cleared code and it came back right away. pulled out new sensor and put back old one. code came on right away P1195. drove back to advanced and cleared the code. then drove 10 miles home and now code. it normally took about 20-30 miles for the CEL with the o2 sensor to come on. they are getting me a new one. any ideas?

I think the P1195 relates to the EGR boost solenoid - but I don't have a 2nd Gen. Protege, so I'm not positive. I would check and clean your EGR system (including hoses) to see if that clears the code, or else try changing the EGR solenoid.
Here is a link that talks more about the EGR system in your car :

Is it normal for one code to be hiding another code? once i put the old o2 sensor back in it the EGR code went away.

Was the new sensor a direct fit sensor, or one of those universal ones? In my opinion the universal ones are nothing but garbage, so that may be your problem.
If you go to the following link, you can get a direct fit front sensor for under $45. I know it says it fits the 1998 Protege LX, but if you go to the Denso website, the part number is the same for both years.

If your 02 is reading bad/lazy it can hide the real reason, like I lean code, is usually a vacuum leak, or a dirty MAF. Id do some research, it is common for the EGR system to clog up. Id get the meanings of the codes and see.

Agreed. Even go to an auto parts store and get a chilton's or Hayne's repair manual. I'm afraid I don't have diagnostic charts for the 2nd gen. protege. :(
