A short read that discusses how GM's decision to cease the operations of its performance division may actually help Pontiac:

If they do that here is my take as niche:
G8 GXP
G5 "SS" (AKA Cobalt SS, include a 4 door please)
Solstice GXP
Astra OPC/VXR (AKA Redline that Saturn would have thought of)
Anything else, not niche...

They're talking about Pontiac as a niche performance brand, not any individual car.

Yeah, but a niche brand is made out niche cars, so it is difficult to define Pontiac as niche performance brand today.
To complete the pic they need to get rid of the non-performance crap, including all the simple rebadging like the G5, G3 and Torrent, those need to go.

The G5 is already a forgotten car thanks to the Cobalt / Cobalt SS. If the Cobalt is to continue to exist at all, there's no point to a G5, be it an SS, GXP or otherwise.
If the Cobalt will still get the axe (according to sources who wrote about the
Cruze), again, the point of a G5 is lost. Who'd buy a compact car on an ancient platform when a brand new compact is available at Chevrolet?
Pontiac needs to adopt some of the attributes of the Sky that made it a better looking car than the Solstice and keep it around. Keep the G8 around since there's nothing else like it in the GM family. Bring the Astra over from Saturn and offer base and GXP versions.
Not sure the Toyota Matrix would fit in with Pontiac's new performance-division aspirations, but they could always move that over to Chevy.
