I know this has probably been covered before but I couldn't find anything solid when searching.
My manual that came with the car (2002 Protege5) says for the fluid type on page 10-5:
ATF M-III or equivalent (e.g. Dexron III) <- same as the power steering fluid
but when I look at the owners manual online through the link at mazdausa.com it shows on page 10-4 that the AFT fluid should be:
ATF M-V ( http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/pdf/manuals/8Q36-EA-01F_Edition3.pdf )
and found this bulletin:
http://www.finishlineperformance.com/pdf/tribute/05-005-08-1928.pdf
that doesn't mention the Protege5 but does say the M-V is not Mercon V fluid.
which version of the manual do I follow? The one that came with the car that shows Dexron III for ATF or the one online that says type M-V?
My Protege5 does not have the sport shift transmission so I'm not sure if that is the difference.

as a follow-up it looks like if I use the Mobil1 Synthetic ATF:
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Other_Products/Mobil_1_Synthetic_ATF.aspx
it covers both the M-III as listed in one manual and the M-V listed in the other.
I did read in another post that someone contacted Redline and was told that their D4 ATF was good for M-V applications, but I like it more when it is in writing from the company.
