I'm looking at ordering all the bearings this week for my upcoming build. I'm using the Pauter rods. Is there any preference in which bearing are best for this engine? I'm looking at the full clevite 77 bearings set however I know some people are using the Toga bearings ?!?

I also notices that the Clevite77 bearings come in different thicknesses (0.0 +0.25mm and +.50mm). Am I right to assume that thicker bearings would only be required on an engine which has a scored crank?

Thanks for your help

I used the Clevite77 ones in my build. And yes, I believe the thicker ones are for a reworked crank. I'd email/contact Sam with Crossover Auto, he can tell you exactly what you need and hook you up.

Yeah, that is where I was looking a the bearings. I don't think my crank will need reworking as my car is running in good shape and has been babied with only 80,000 km on it.

To be honest I'm not even sure I will really need new bearings...when rebuilding do the bearings always get changed (swapping rods) or can stockers be reused with the new rods?

Bearings are a must in any build. No engine builder would ever think about re-using bearings. And if he did got get your motor back now!!!!! Make sure you get head work done. Most important thing.

bearings are like gaskets/seals when you rebuild you most deffinitly get thoose changed aswell its not like an exhaust gasket that can potentially be re used, bearings and seals are a must!

Also have a shop measure your crank to make sure it's even all the way across (or however they check it) and won't need machined.. just to be on the safe side.

i picked up the ACL bearings from *************... but here's a direct quote from a very reliable source

the cometic gasket kit is not as complete and is more expensive than the OEM kit. and frankly the quality of what is included really isn't any better. i'd never put it in my own engine. i've had engines run over 300 whp on factory spec bearings and, after a year's worth and 25,000 miles at that level, inspected and found the bearings to be perfect with no beyond average wear. i'd never recommend anything other than OE spec hardware for this engine, and have seen more people do themselves a disservice and cause problems working with anything but.

but thats my .02

why is head work the most important thing? I thought most people here don't bother with any head work beyond valve adjustment and seating?

I'm pretty sure my crank will be ok but maybe I will hold off getting bearing till it's been measured.

There is a lot of flow that can be generated from a good p&p job on the heads. I saw a post awhile ago with some cfm flow numbers and they were ridiculous. It is the number 1 thing I would focus on. I remember back in the day when I had the heads ported on a nissan maxima. 50 hp just from that.
