View Full Version : Poor acceleration??

Hey guys,
So recently I've been having some trouble with my '95 protege ES. It seems like it just randomly stopped accelerating as fast as it once did, especially after hitting 80km/h or so. Even just city driving, I find the car will get up to 20km/h and then I basically have the pedal pressed 3/4 of the way to speed up.
I've replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs, though that didn't really do much. The engine light has never gone off, so I wasn't given a hint as to what might be causing this. I feel it might be either the catalytic converter or the O2 sensor, but wouldn't the check engine light go off if either wasn't functioning properly? It could be the fuel pump, but wouldn't that cause my car to stall? Its never had any problems starting up and has never stalled. Any ideas?
Thanks!!

During a cold start, before the engine heats up, does it run well? It could be an issue with the intake pipes leaking. Check air delivery to the engine. There could also be something stuck in the IM. Good luck!

Umm 95 does have a ck engine light, but might not come on for something small. Id do a full tune up, just to have everything covered, and if you have access to compressed air, blow throw the MAF lightly, there could be dust on the element and its not running right. Id also do a good intake cleaning, run seafoam through the brake booster line, pour it in slow and when the engine is up to temp. Pour 1/2 in the line, and 1/2 in the gas tank see if that does anything.

Use MAF sensor cleaner rather than compressed air. It's less than $5 for a can if I remember right, and it's safer IMHO

I donno, ive never used the MAF cleaner, in our shop we LIGHTLY use compressed air to blow the dust/dirt off the sensor.

+1 for the MAF cleaner. 5 bucks and it's designed to do the job. I'll spend 5 bucks to spray a 150+ buck part.
