As good as the Volkswagen GTI is, an infusion of extra power couldn't possibly hurt. VW's GTI R32 was a highly refined car, but buyers quickly realized that the 3.2L VR6's 250 horsepower was barely enough to compensate for the engine's added weight over the standard GTI's 2.0L turbo four and the R32's heavy all-wheel drive system. What's more, the R32 was short-lived; it's no longer available for the 2009 model year. Enter the GTI R-Series.

According to Car and Driver, VW will bring the R-Series to the United States, possibly to be named R20, featuring the powerplant from the Audi S3. Expect around 270 horsepower from a high-pressure 2.0L turbo engine - a 70-horsepower improvement over the standard GTI. That power will be funneled through either a standard 6-speed stick or dual clutch DSG transmission to the front wheels. Like some other high-power front-wheel drive cars, an electronic differential will try and cope with the inevitable torque steer.

As much as we'd love to see the big 3.6L V6 engine from the Passat stuffed under the GTI's hood, a small turbo four will likely make for a better handling package along with reasonably good fuel economy – definitely something to look forward to later this year as a 2010 model

i dont think so, i think it looks pretty sleek.

Now it can contend with the ms3, as a more luxurious refined alternative.

The ultimate Golf is here! And this time, the flagship hot hatchback has more power and an all-new badge to boot.

The replacement for the R32 is being referred to within VW as the R-Series Turbo, but it’s likely to be called the R20T, hinting at its engine capacity. And our exclusive pictures show how the most powerful Golf ever will look when it eclipses the GTI at the top of the range.
VW is ditching the R32 name, along with the 3.2-litre V6 that’s powered the previous two cars, Auto Express has learned. In its place will be a tuned version of the GTI’s four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged engine.

A bigger turbo, as well as tweaks to the ECU, will ensure the car has a power output of around 270bhp – that’s more than 20bhp above the outgoing V6. What’s more, as the unit is lighter, the R20T should weigh roughly the same as the GTI.

But with all that extra power on tap, it will deliver scintillating pace, with the 0-60mph sprint arriving in about five seconds. That’s a full second-and-a-half quicker than the MkV R32, and only a few tenths shy of BMW’s V8-engined M3. Top speed will be limited to 155mph.
The same engine will power an R20T version of the Scirocco. This was previewed by the Studie R concept at Italy’s Bologna Motor Show last year.

Although a VW spokesman refused to confirm whether the Golf would be driven by the front or all four wheels, the latter is more likely – as on the heavier and thirstier R32. This will help to put all that power on to the tarmac, as well as provide high levels of grip.

The engine will channel its power through a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or VW’s DSG dual-clutch set-up. And as the unit is smaller and lighter, the R20T will offer significant improvements in fuel economy and emit less CO2 than the car it replaces.

VW’s designers have taken the understated looks of the R32 to the next level. A deep front spoiler with integrated LED headlights – a styling cue borrowed from sister company Audi – takes inspiration from the Concept BlueSport seen at January’s Detroit exhibition, while flared wheelarches, wider tyres and lowered suspension provide further clues to its potential.
At the rear, in true R-series style, twin pipes exit close to the centre-line of the car. Plus, a ‘sound-optimised’ exhaust system should ensure the R20T delivers noise to match its looks. A roof spoiler and underbody diffuser both help to increase downforce and keep the car planted at high speeds, too. Reports suggest that the R20T will make its public debut at the Nürburgring 24-hour race in Germany in May, before going on sale in UK showrooms early next year. Prices will start from around £25,000 for the three-door, with the five-door costing £2,000 more – pitching the VW head-to-head with the Ford Focus RS and Subaru Impreza STi.

he MkVI Golf GTI has only just hit the road, but already its crown is under threat! These are the best pictures yet of an even hotter variant, likely to be badged the Golf R20. We broke the story here in February, and these photos help to confirm the car’s existence.

Gone is the V6 engine from the last-generation R32, instead a tweaked version of VW’s 2.0-litre turbocharged unit, also used in the
Audi S3, producing in the region of 270bhp will be used. And with a similar kerbweight to the less powerful GTI, plus AWD to help traction off the line, 0-60mph should take little more than five seconds.

Expect similar styling cues to the GTI, but with a deeper and more aggressive bodykit and chunkier wheels. As this test mule, disguised with a 2.0 TDI badge, demonstrates, trademark centrally mounted twin exhausts will also distinguish the ‘R’ car from the GTI.

If rumours are to be believed the finished article will make its debut at the Nurburgring 24hr race in May – hosted on the same track that these photos were taken.

Prices should start from around £25,00 for the three-door when the R20 goes on sale early next year.

The corporate-speak word still used today is "synergy". But if VW wants to borrow some technology from Audi, such as lifting its latest 5-cylinder engine out of the TT-RS and placing it in an AWD (http://www.worldcarfans.com/9090416.009/vw-golf-r20t-to-receive-20l-biturbo-with-300hp--awd-golf-r45-with-340hp-on-the-way#) Golf, then call it what you will.

But before we get to that, first come the Golf and Scirocco R20T models, featuring an engine that will up the power quotient on the Golf to better meet the competition, given that there's a 300 hp Focus RS and a 250 hp Megane Renault Sport prowling the streets already. VW has been testing the Golf and Scirocco R20T (http://www.worldcarfans.com/9090414.006/vw-scirocco-r20-spied-at-nrburgring) models over at the Nurburgring circuit with a 2.0 liter twin-turbocharged powerplant that possibly outputs about 300 horses too, according to AutoMotorSport.se Sweden sources at Wolfsburg.
Details on the turbo-twinning technology are not yet available but it seems VW will push the 2.0 liter power plant it shares with Audi (as seen in the S3 with 265 hp) to even higher levels than the current, rather tame, 211 hp rating in the Golf GTI and those 265 horses in the S3.

Also under testing in both those models in all-wheel-drive form by VW is Audi's new 2.5 liter, turbocharged 5-cylinder engine with 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque recently introduced in the new TT-RS. The models are designated by the attached R45 moniker and AutoMotorSport.se is reporting that even that powerplant may be getting a boost to 390 hp.
Now, that is engineering at work, no matter what you call it.

Hotter than a VW Golf GTI: the Focus RS rivaling 280bhp four-wheel-drive Golf R.

Volkswagen’s Golf R has been spied out testing.

It’s the hardest and most powerful production Golf yet, despite downsizing from the VW Golf R32 (http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evolongtermtests/215433/volkswagen_golf_r32.html)’s 3.2-litre V6 to a 2-litre four-cylinder engine.

The unit in question is essentially the same as the one in the mk5 Golf GTI (http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/51085/volkswagen_golf_gti.html), with a larger turbo cranking the power up to at least the 261bhp of the VW Scirocco R (http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/235802/volkswagen_scirocco_r.html). The team behind the R-range are keen to wind the Golf up a notch further, though, with around 280bhp likely.

That’s to accompany another difference from its Scirocco sibling – the Golf will be four-wheel drive, with the ‘Roc’s power going through the front two wheels only. The coupe does 0-62mph in 6.4sec; expect the more potent (and more planted Golf) to do better and potentially post a sub-6sec time.

It’ll need to if it’s to compete with perhaps its most natural rival, the Ford Focus RS (http://www.evo.co.uk/videos/planetevovideos/234248/ford_focus_rs.html). The Blue Oval’s hardcore hatch is the real-world performance car of the moment, combining front-wheel drive and 300bhp with blistering point-to-point pace.

The Volkswagen Golf R (http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evospyshots/234975/volkswagen_golf_r20.html) will have a job on its hands trying to compete.

Official pictures of the Volkswagen Golf R have leaked out ahead of its anticipated launch at the Frankfurt motor show tomorrow.
A hot version of the Golf to rival the Ford Focus RS, Mazda 3 MPS and Audi S3 has long been rumoured and our spy photographers have captured it several times.

The reports claim it will be largely based on the Scriocco R and will feature VW’s 4Motion AWD system.

The VW Golf R is a successor for the R32 but it won’t use that car’s 3.2-litre V6 according to the reports. Instead, it will get a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which produces 261bhp and around 258lb ft of torque.

Its 0-62mph time for the six-speed manual is expected to be 6.5secs, with the DSG-equipped model capable of getting to 62mph in 6.4secs.
Other features claimed to appear on the R include LED lights, new wheels, sills and badges, and twin rear exhausts. Inside it gets two-tone sports seats, aluminium pedals and R badging.

No prices have been confirmed by VW, but expect to pay around £25,000 when it goes on sale in the UK next year.

if its over 35k to get one, then y not spend the money one an EVO or STI like a smart person?

because most people dont just want a hardened gokart...the quality and materials in the golf are [----------------------------] way ahead of either the STi or the Evo...
Like mikey, i'd rather go with the G37 than either as well

so your saying you would rather drive this because it has a nice interior? good luck, id think you would want to look at an overall package when buying a car in the 35k range, and Volkswagen hasent shown the package. interior maybe, reliability no and repair cost no. def not economical in this day and age. no "quality" behind it other than a 15k interior, which comes with ticking timing chains and more electrical issues than a power plant.

and those hardened gokarts will run circles around you, while keeping there resale value and making more power

but agreed, for the price range stepping up to the next level would be worth it more than one of these.

It all depends on what models you are talking about with their pricing. There will not be an AWD version.

There will not be an AWD version.

WHAT?! It said in the article that it WAS all wheel drive. If its not AWD, they are going to have a HARD time selling it for over $30k (or $5k more than WRX/MS3). If it was AWD, then people would buy them. They scouped up the R32's pretty fast, and those cost a pretty penny.

EDIT: "The reports claim it will be largely based on the Scriocco R and will feature VW’s 4Motion AWD system." quoted from mikeyb post at the top of this page?

What is it?

According to VW the new £28,930 Golf R is “the most powerful and fastest accelerating Golf ever produced.” And seeing as it has 267bhp from its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, and can hit 62mph in just 5.7sec (or 5.5sec with the optional DSG transmission fitted), it’s hard to argue against VW’s claims.

Not that you’d ever realise just how potent the Golf R is merely by looking at it. Given how much poke it has and how quick it undeniably is, this has to be one of the subtlest genuine high performance hatchbacks there has ever been.

Apart from its twin exhausts, mildly restyled black door mirrors, LED running lights and tiny rear boot spoiler, you’d simply not pick this car as anything special were it to pass you in the high street. In reality, a GTi on 19in wheels probably looks meaner in the raw, despite the R’s tinted rear windows and its almost too-subtle badging front and rear.

What does make a difference visually is the reduced ride height. Thanks to the R’s slightly stiffer suspension and new ride height it sits some 25mm nearer to the ground than normal. While this doesn’t quite provide the R with the full Cal-look low rider appearance, it does makes it appear more purposeful than normal if you look closely enough.

Mechanically the big difference is the addition of a new version of VW’s 4-Motion all-wheel-drive system. Apart from allowing the R to handle the extra power and torque that has been squeezed from the venerable 2.0-litre VW engine (it’s actually the same lump as you’ll fid in an Audi S3), the 4WD system endows the R with more on-road decorum in virtually every way, even if it does ad a few unwanted kilos to the kerbweight.

What’s it like?

Look at the raw performance figures and you might expect this to be VW’s answer to hot rods such as the Focus RS and Mugen Civic Type R. But in reality the R is nothing of the sort. It’s very rapid, yes, but it’s also a smooth, grown up, refined kind of hot hatch, very much in the same vein as the old six cylinder R32 but, sadly, without the creamy soundtrack to go with it.

What the R is categorically not is a B-road monster. It rides extremely well for such a rapid hot hatch, and the noise emitted from its big-ish 225/40 18in tyres is unusually well suppressed. On a motorway it doesn’t feel a whole lot less refined than a Passat, or, indeed, a more regular member of the Golf family.

Is it wooden in feel, as so many quick Golf have been in the past? No, but neither is it what you’d call cutting edge dynamically. VW’s aim with this car is to attract the kind of customer who likes the wolf-in-sheeps clothing approach, hence the reason the ride is so well resolved and the engine/exhaust note are so reserved.

This same restrained, well thought out but slightly plain approach also applies to the interior, which boasts a great pair of front seats and the odd R logo to distinguish it above other Golf, but not much else. The whole thing is quite beautifully put together, however, and this does lend the R an unusually mature feel, not just inside but on the road – and in the showroom as well.
Should I buy one?

It depends what sort of person you are, and what sort of hot hatch you like to drive. If you’re a Focus RS kind of bloke (or bloke-ess) then the R is unlikely to appeal. But if you like a more subtle approach and don’t want the rest of the world to know how fast your car really is, the R could be right up your street.

You will need to like its subtle approach an awful lot, however, because at nigh-on £29k before you have added the must-have DSG option, it costs significantly more than its obvious competition, most of which is more exciting to drive. As ever, you pays your money…
Steve Sutcliffe

Apparently not all big debuts happen at the Detroit Auto Show. Volkswagen made a splash at the Montreal Auto Show, by showing, for the first time in North America, the Euro-spec Golf R. First unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show last year, VW has yet to confirm this model for production in North America, but the fact that it’s being shown here means the German automaker is testing the waters.

In a statement Volkswagen Canada said that it, “brings this Concept vehicle to Montreal to gauge public reaction and solicit feedback in order to determine the desirability of a premium performance model like the Golf R Concept for sale in the Canadian market at some point in the future.”

A step above the GTI, the Ruses the same turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as found in the Audi TTS and makes 265-hp and 258 ft-lbs of torque. Combined with an all-wheel drive 4MOTION setup, VW claims a 0-62 mph time of just 5.5 seconds!

In addition, the Golf R gets a stiffer and lower suspension, larger and more powerful brakes, a special aero kit and dual exhaust tips. Inside there are new sport seats, special aluminum pedals and a flat-bottom steering wheel.

Sold for €36,400 in Europe, that would equate to over $50,000 based on current exchange rates. Realistically, however, a U.S. spec Golf R (or GTI R) is more likely to be slightly less well-equipped (meaning you can forget those nicely bolstered seats) and retail for closer to $30,000.

Official release:

Volkswagen Unveils “Top Golf” in Montreal

North American Premiere of the Golf R Concept

Montreal, QC ––– Volkswagen Canada held the North American premiere of its “Top Golf” today at the Montreal International Auto Show. Named the Golf R Concept, Volkswagen unveiled this 3-door “Hot Hatch” that produces 265 HP and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds while consuming only 8.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres* traveled to the automotive media.

“The new Golf R Concept is the “Top Golf” – the best in the overall combination of acceleration, top speed, fuel-economy, handling, performance, and distinctive features for a vehicle in the compact segment,” announced John White, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada Inc. at today’s press conference. ”Our commitment to leadership in the environment is matched with our drive to be leaders in innovation and technology. This automotive passion, even in an era of downsizing, still has something to do with power and performance.”

On the heels of its world premiere last September at the IAA in Frankfurt, Germany, the Golf R Concept follows Volkswagen’s strategy of creating premium performance package versions of some its models as R models. Other models available in Europe include the Passat R36, Touareg R50, and the Scirocco R.

R models are packaged with substantial upgrades which include: more powerful engines, advanced powertrains, suspension and steering modifications, stronger brakes, aerodynamic

improvements, special sport seating, and unique exterior and interior aesthetic upgrades. This R model was conceptualized by Volkswagen Individual, Volkswagen’s special customizing and tuning arm in Germany.

Driven by its 2.0 litre, 4-cylinder TSI direct engine gasoline engine that has a specific power of 133 HP per litre and a maximum of 258 lbs-ft of torque from 2,500 to 5,000 RPM, the Golf R Concept is capable of covering 1,000 metres (1 km) in 25.4 seconds and of reaching an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

TSI Engine of the Golf R Concept

The EA113 series direct-injection gasoline engine is used in the new Golf R, with a turbocharger that makes it very flexible and variable right up into the highest performance ranges. The engine’s power can be spontaneously summoned in the blink of an eye throughout its speed range. The engine also impressively underscores its potential acoustically, as well as visually: its two chrome tailpipes can be seen at the centre of the bumper under the diffuser integrated there – an “R trait”.

The four-cylinder engine develops its tremendous propulsive power via a turbocharger (up to 1.2 bar boost pressure) with intercooling. The engine, with a weight of just 152 kilograms, is controlled by a fully electronic engine management system with E-Gas. The cylinders of the four-cylinder engine have been equipped with reinforcing bolts. Also designed to be stronger are the connecting rods, so that they can transfer the engine’s high torque to the crankshaft. Last but not least, the cylinder block is also reinforced to handle the aggressive engine forces.

New all-wheel drive on the Golf R Concept

As standard equipment, the Golf R transfers the TSI’s power to the road via the latest generation of Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. The system underwent significant advanced development versus the previous version found in the Golf R32.

Above all, power transmission between the front and rear axles – especially the all-wheel differential that operates in an oil bath – exhibits clear advances. The most important one: Activation of the all-wheel differential no longer requires a difference in speeds between the front and rear axles. For the first time an electric pump is used to build pressure. The electric pump supplies oil to a hydraulic reservoir whose working pressure is 30 bar.

A control module computes the ideal drive torque for the rear axle and controls, via a valve, to determine how much oil pressure is applied to the working pistons of the multi-plate clutch. The contact pressure at the clutch plates rises in proportion to the desired torque at the rear axle. The amount of torque that is transferred can be varied continuously with the magnitude of the pressure applied to the clutch plates. The system operates independent of slip since the system’s working pressure is always available.

When starting up and accelerating, this prevents spinning of the wheels at the front axle more effectively, since the control module regulates the torque distribution based on dynamic axle loads. In extreme cases, nearly 100 percent of the drive torque can be directed to the rear axle, resulting in further gains in active safety and dynamic performance.

Sport chassis and brakes on the Golf R

When it came to the chassis, development engineers were able to adapt the first-class system in the current production Golf. In front, one finds the familiar McPherson strut suspension with helical springs and telescoping shock absorbers, and at the rear, a multi-link suspension ensures that the standard Electronic Stabilization Programme (ESP) rarely needs to intervene. Nonetheless, the basic layout is transformed into a sport chassis with ride-height lowered by 25 millimetres, and the springs, dampers and stabilizers are completely re-tuned to match.

The brake system is also modified for the higher level of driving performance on the Golf R Concept. In place of a 16-inch system, a 17-inch brake system is used with internally ventilated discs all around and R-specific brake calipers painted a high-gloss black with R logo. The front discs are 345 millimetres in diameter, and 310 millimetres at the rear. The ESP is also modified, and can be switched to a new Sport mode via the ESP button. During very fast and curve-filled drives – as on a track circuit – the ESP system delays intervention, enabling even more responsive handling properties.
The electromechanical power-assisted steering of the Golf R Concept is also given a sportier characteristic. If the sports car is ordered with the optional DCC (dynamic chassis control) option, the power-assisted steering even assumes a specially tuned characteristic for each of the system’s driving modes (Sport, Normal, and Comfort).
The chassis maintains contact with the road through its standard newly designed 18-inch alloy wheels (“Talladega” type) with 225/40 tires. As an option, the same wheels are available in a 19-inch version with 235/35 tires.

Exterior features of the Golf R Concept

Like the first two generations of the Super Golf (I starting in 2002, II in 2005) and the new sister model, the Scirocco R, the new Golf R Concept sports a completely modified set of exterior and interior features. Volkswagen designers, led by Klaus Bischoff, have given the Golf R Concept an independent image with a bundle of well-coordinated refinements.

The Golf R Concept unmistakably marks the peak of the model series, and the quality of its styling follows the basic design language of “La Semplicità” set forth by the Head of Group Design, Walter de Silva.

Outside, the customization includes new wheels and brakes as well as new bumper designs. In front, three very large air intakes characterize the Golf R Concept in the bumper area; the louvers on the intakes are painted in high-gloss black, and standard LED strips which serve as daytime running lights are integrated in the two outer air intakes.

Also painted in high-gloss black are the two louvers of the radiator grille. Placed on the right side of the grille is the newly designed R logo in chrome. Bi-Xenon headlights, included without surcharge, illuminate the way through the night. On its sides, the Golf R is identified by its Talladega wheels, side skirt extensions in body colour, and mirror housings painted in high-gloss black.

It is also possible to recognize the Golf R Concept as an independent top model at the rear. Along with the bumper with diffuser and tailpipes, R logo and larger roof edge spoiler, the newly developed taillights stand out. They operate with standard, distinctive LED technology, with covers that are also smoked.
Interior features of the Golf R Concept

The sixth generation Volkswagen Golf, with its high-end interior materials, breaks through boundaries to the next higher class. The Golf R Concept also benefits from this quality image; it is in a league of its own based on its power reserves. Additional special upgrades developed by Volkswagen Individual underscore the car’s high-class positioning.

A key equipment option here is the newly designed “Top Sport seat system” with its excellent ergonomic properties. The driver just sits down, adjusts the seat longitudinally and in height, adjusts the steering wheel, buckles up, and is ready to go. The seat fits as though tailor-made. Together with the similarly customized Golf GTI, the Golf R Concept sets standards here among the international competition.
The centre panels of the sport seats are upholstered in the honeycomb textured grey-black “Kyalami” design – named after the race course by the same name in South Africa.

The front edge of the seat is upholstered in Titan Black fabric, while the inside panels of the side supports are upholstered with crystal-grey “San Remo” micro-fibres. The rest of the seat components and the roof liner are coloured black. The new R logo is embroidered in the front head restraints as well. Motorsport shell seats for driver and front passenger are also available as an option.

In this case, the centre seat panels are up holstered in the “San Remo” microfibre fabric. On the outside, the shell seats are covered with black leather. All seams of the interior are in “Art Grey”; this is also true of the decorative seams on the three-spoke leather steering wheel. Perforated leather is used at the top and bottom of the steering wheel, ensuring maximum hand grip. The sides of the steering wheel featuring ergonomic motor sport attributes are covered by continuous leather.
Spokes in fine black piano paint add an elegant aspect to complete the sporty image. The centre steering wheel spoke bears the new R logo. The fascinating material contrast of piano paint and chrome conveys an image of the passion for finesse and precision in every detail.

Other new design features include the R gearshift knob, carpet floor mats, aluminum door tread plates with R logo, and the instruments with their blue pointers. Stainless steel sport pedals and R-specific instrument and door accents in “Silver Lane” style complete the customization. Another standard feature on the Golf R Concept is an automatic climate control system (“Climatronic”), “RCD 310” radio-CD system (4 × 20 Watt) including MP3 player plus dual tuners.

The Golf R went on order in Germany last fall and begins at a price of €36,400. Volkswagen Canada brings this Concept vehicle to Montreal to gauge public reaction and solicit feedback in order to determine the desirability of a premium performance model like the Golf R Concept for sale in the Canadian market at some point in the future.

VW's 4MOTION all-wheel drive setup, makes this hot-hatch a all-year-round performer.

http://www.autoguide.com/gallery/gallery.php/d/142868-4/DB2010AU00053_large.jpg (http://www.mazdas247.com/gallery/gallery.php/v/main/news/manufacturers/volkswagen/golfr/DB2010AU00053_large.jpg.html)

Volkswagen has just officially launched the high-performance Golf R model in Europe, just days after its first North American showing as a concept at the Montreal International Auto Show. As an even-higher performance version than the iconic GTI, the Golf R gets an upgraded version of the same 2.0-liter TFSI 4-cylinder as well as VW’s 4MOTION AWD system, making it an exceptional driver’s car – even in the rain… or snow.

Using the same 2.0 TFSI as found in the Audi TTS, the Golf R makes 265-hp at 6000 rpm and 258 ft-lbs of torque from 2500 to 50o0 rpm. Both a six-speed manual and six-speed dual-clutch transmission will be offered, allowing a 0-62 mph time of as low as 5.5 seconds (likely 5.3 seconds to 60 mph).

Other highlights include a new front fascia and rear bumper with dual center-exit exhausts, as well as a stiffer suspension that has been lowered by 25mm (1-inch). The list goes on an on, with a sport steering wheel, highly bolstered sport seats, upgraded brakes and 18-inch wheels (19s optional). There’s even a version of Audi’s Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) that allows the driver to adjust the sensitivity of the throttle, steering and suspension.

When the car was shown in Montreal, Volkswagen Canada said in a statement that it, “brings this Concept vehicle to Montreal to gauge public reaction and solicit feedback in order to determine the desirability of a premium performance model like the Golf R Concept for sale in the Canadian market at some point in the future.”

We have to imagine the Golf R will also make its way to major shows like the Chicago Auto Show next month, as there’s simply no way VW would sell such a low volume car in Canada and not the U.S.

Volkswagen has released an entirely list of specifications for the Golf R in Europe as well as a new gallery of photos.

Wolfsburg/Ellmau, January 2010. The new Golf R is here. Designed by
Volkswagen Individual. All-wheel driven. As the flagship of the model
series it is equipped with standard Bi-Xenon headlights, LED daytime
running lights and LED rear lights. Shifted manually or by optional
DSG. At 199 kW/270 PS it is the most powerful version of the model
series ever built. At the same time, it is the most fuel-efficient Golf R of
all times – 21 percent (!) more fuel efficient than the previous model.
A high-class sports car (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/#) with compact-class fuel economy. The data in
detail: The Golf R sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. The
Golf R performs even better when shifted with the optional direct shift
gearbox (DSG): It leaves the 100-km/h mark behind it in a sen sational
5.5 seconds. The best data: While the retired Golf R32 processed
10.7 litres fuel per 100 kilometres, the new Golf R only needs 8.5 litres
– 2.2 litres less! Accordingly, CO2 emissions are reduced from 255 to
199 g/km. After 100 kilometres, the automatically shifted Golf R DSG is
filled with just 8.4 litres (195 g/km CO2) at the fuel pump.
The enormous efficiency gain of the new Golf R is not some magic
trick; rather it is the result of intelligent downsizing. Its legendary
pre deces sor generated its power from a displacement of 3.2 litres
(“32”) and six cylin ders. In the new model, this is accomplished with
four cylinders and 2.0 litres of displacement – a highly advanced direct
injection petrol engine with turbo-charging (TSI). At the fuel pump and
Frugal – Golf R has most powerful TSI ever, yet it consumes just 8.4 litres as DSG
Exceptional – Top Golf with all-wheel drive (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/#) has superior handling
More Power, Less Fuel:

And the Golf R − and the chrome dual tailpipes of its sound-optimized
exhaust system − display a significantly broader “sound spectrum”.
The TSI’s torque characteristic is just as impressive. By comparison:
The six cylinder of the previous model developed a maximum torque
of 320 Newton-meters at 2,500 rpm. And that too was remarkably good.
The turbo four-cylinder direct injection engine of the new Golf R, on
the other hand, transfers 350 Newton-meters torque to the cranks-
haft, also available from 2,500 rpm, but it can maintain this peak value
up to 5,000 rpm. So the new car (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/#) delivers a fascinatingly high level of
fundamen tal dynamic performance. The Golf R32 and Golf R are really
only equals in one discipline; they each have a top speed of 250 km/h
(electronically limited on the Golf R).
THE TSI OF THE GOLF R
The new Golf R uses the EA113 series direct-injection petrol engine;
its turbocharger makes it very flexible and variable right up to the
highest end of the performance curve. The 1,984 cm3 TSI’s specific
power is a respectable 100.3 kW/136.6 PS per litre displacement,
and its res ponsive ness is just as impressive. The engine’s power can
be spon taneously summoned in the blink of an eye over its entire
speed range. As mentioned, the engine also shows off its potential
acoustically. Visually too: Its two chrome tailpipes are visible under
the diffuser integra ted at the centre of the bumper – an “R trait” of the
previous model as well.
The four-cylinder engine develops its tremendous propulsive power
via a turbocharger (up to 1.2 bar boost pressure) with intercooling.
The engine, weighing in at just 152 kilograms, is controlled by a fully
electro nic engine management system with E-Gas. The cylinders of the
four-cylinder engine have been equipped with reinforcing bolts, unlike
less powerful TSI versions. Design engineers also designed stronger
connecting rods that can reliably transfer the engine’s high torque to
the crankshaft. Last but not least, the cylinder block was reinforced to
handle the aggressive engine forces.
THE NEW ALL-WHEEL DRIVE OF THE GOLF R
The Golf R transfers the TSI’s power to the road via the latest gene ration
of Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system, which is standard
equipment. Compared to the version implemented in the Golf R32,
the system underwent significant advanced development. Above all,
power transmission between the front and rear axles – especially the
all-wheel differential that operates in an oil bath – demonstrates clear
advan ta ges compared to the previous generation. The most im por
tant
one: Acti vation of the all-wheel differential no longer requires a
differen ce between the front and rear axle speeds.
That is because, and this is different than on the previous generation,
an electric pump is being used to build pressure for the first time.
The electric pump supplies oil to a hydraulic reservoir with a working
pressure of 30 bar. A control module computes the ideal drive torque
for the rear axle, and it uses a valve to control how much oil pressure
is applied to the working pistons of the multi-plate clutch. The contact
pressure at the clutch plates rises in proportion to the desired torque
at the rear axle. The amount of torque that is transferred can be
varied con tinuously by the amount of pressure applied to the clutch
plates. Unlike the previous 4MOTION generation, the system operates
indepen dent of slip, since the system’s working pressure is always
available. When starting up and accelerating, spinning of the wheels at
the front axle is prevented more effectively, since the control module
regulates torque distribution based on dynamic axle loads. In extreme
cases, nearly 100 percent of the drive torque can be directed to the rear
axle, a plus in terms of active safety and dynamic performance.
SPORT CHASSIS OF THE GOLF R
When it came to the running gear, development engineers adopted
the first-class system of the current production Golf. This means: In
front the familiar McPherson strut suspension with helical springs
and telesco ping shock absorbers; at the rear a multi-link suspension
ensures that the standard ESP system seldom needs to intervene. The
basic layout was transformed into a sport chassis with ride-height
lowered 25 millimetres, and the springs, dampers and stabilisers were
completely re-tuned to this new configuration. Also available as an
option is DCC dynamic chassis control whose character was fully tuned
to the Golf R. This system continually adapts suspension damping to
the roadway and driving situation. In addition to the standard “Normal”
mode, the driver can manually activate a “Sport” or “Comfort” mode.
The brake system (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/#) was also modified for the Golf R’s higher level of
driving performance. Instead of a 16-inch system, a 17-inch brake
system is used; all brakes have internally ventilated discs and R-speci
fic
brake callipers painted a high-gloss black with R-logo. In front the
discs are 345 millimetres in diameter, and 310 millimetres at the rear.
The elec tro nic stabilisation program (ESP) was also modified. It can
be switched to a new Sport mode via the ESP button. During very
fast and curve-filled drives – as on a circuit – the ESP system delays
inter ven tion, enabling even more responsive handling proper ties.
The electro-mechani cal power-assisted steering was given a sportier
characteris tic as well. If the Golf R is ordered with optional DCC
dyna mic chassis control, the power-assisted steering is given a specially
tuned characteristic for each of the system’s driving modes (“Sport”,
“Normal”, “Comfort”).
The running gear maintains its contact with the road via new
18-inch alloy wheels (“Talladega” type in “Sterling Silver” colour)
with 225/40 tyres as standard equipment. The same style wheels are
available in a 19-inch version with 235/35 tyres as an option. Customers
can also order the 19-inch <NOBR style="COLOR: darkgreen; FONT-SIZE: 100%; FONT-WEIGHT: normal" id=itxt_nobr_124_0>wheelshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif</NOBR> (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/#) in “Glossy Black”. Regardless of the
colour, when 19-inch wheels are selected the headlight housings always
appear completely in black, and the Golf R windows are tinted from the
B-pillars back.
EXTERIOR FEATURES OF THE GOLF R
Like the first two generations of the Super Golf (I starting in 2002,
II in 2005) − and the car’s new sister model the Scirocco R − the new
Golf R also sports an entirely new set of exterior and interior features.
Volkswagen designers have given the Golf R independent styling with
a bundle of well-coordinated refinements, including large air scoops
to meet the cooling demands of the 270-PS engine. The Golf R clearly
represents the peak of the model series, and the quality of its styling
follows the basic design language of “La Semplicità” set forth by the
Head of Group Design, Walter de Silva.
Outside, it is customised by features such as the new “Talladega” style
wheels, black brake callipers with R-logo and new bumper design. In
front, three very large air intakes shape the front bumper section of
the Golf R; louvres on the intakes are painted in high-gloss black, and
standard LED strips that serve as daytime running lights are integrated
in the two outer air intakes. Also painted in high-gloss black are the two
louvres of the radiator grille. A new R-logo design appears in chrome on
the right side of the grille. Bi-Xenon headlights with dynamic cornering
light, included at no extra charge, illuminate the way through the night.
On its sides, the Golf R is recognisable by side skirt extensions in body
colour and mirror housings painted in high-gloss black.
The Golf R can be clearly made out as an independent top model at
the rear as well. The rear lights, a new design, stands out along with
the bumper with diffuser and centrally positioned tailpipes, R-logo and
larger roof edge spoiler. They operate with standard LED technology (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/#)
that is visually distinctive and exhibits extremely quick response as well
as long in life.
INTERIOR FEATURES OF THE GOLF R
The sixth generation Golf, with its high-end interior materials, breaks
through class distinctions to the next higher class. The Golf R benefits
from this quality image too; its power reserves alone put it in a league
of its own. Additional special upgrades developed by Volkswagen
Individual highlight the car’s high-end positioning.
A key equipment option here is the newly designed “Top Sport seat
system” with heated seats in front that have excellent ergonomic
proper ties. The driver just sits down, adjusts the longitudinal and height
posi tions of the seat, adjusts the steering wheel, buckles up, and is
ready to go. The seat fits as though it were tailor-made. Here, the Golf R
− together with the Golf GTI and Golf GTD − is setting standards among
the international competition. The centre panels of the sport seats are
upholstered in the honeycomb textured grey-black “Kyalami” design
– named after the race course of the same name in South Africa; the
front edge of the seat is upholstered in <NOBR style="COLOR: darkgreen; FONT-SIZE: 100%; FONT-WEIGHT: normal" id=itxt_nobr_168_0>Titanhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif</NOBR> (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/#) Black fabric. The in-
side panels of the side supports are upholstered with crystal-grey
“San Remo” micro-fibres. The rest of the seat components and the
roofliner are coloured black. The new R-logo is embroidered in the
front head restraints as well. Motorsport shell seats for driver and front
passenger are also available as an option; they have integrated head
restraints with embroidered R-logos. In this case, the centre seat panels
are upholstered in the “San Remo” micro-fibre fabric. On the outside,
the shell seats are upholstered with black leather.
All seams of the interior are in “Art Grey” (exception: Motorsport shell
seats). As so are the decorative seams of the standard multi-function
three-spoke leather steering wheel. Perforated leather is used at the top
and bottom of the steering wheel, ensuring maximum hand grip. The
sides of the steering wheel with their ergonomic motorsport attri bu tes
are fully trimmed in leather. Spokes in fine black piano paint add an
elegant aspect that finishes the sporty image. The centre steering wheel
spoke bears the R-logo. The fascinating material contrast of piano paint
and chrome conveys the passion for finesse and precision in every
detail of the interior.
Also re-styled are the R gearshift knob, carpet floor mats with piping
in “Art Grey”, aluminium door tread plates with R-logo and the
in struments with their blue pointers and a speedometer scale that reads
up to 300 km/h. Stainless steel sport pedals and R-specific instrument
and door accents in “Silver Lane” styling round out the custom features.
Standard equipment on the Golf R also includes an automatic climate
control system (“Climatronic”) and the “RCD 310” radio-CD system
(4 x 20 Watt) with MP3 player plus dual tuners.
