I have the opportunity to purchase a '99 Miata "special edition" with 35,000 miles. The owner claims it's in great shape and runs perfectly. All for $4000. What do you guys think? I would use this car as a track car/weekend car/etc.
Is the '99 a good year? Anything I should look out for if I consider it?

seriously... but I'd get it checked out. That honestly seems a little low for a 99 if it is indeed an SE

check the spark plug wires and make sure they look new. Ask him if it has the power issues that mine had..
actually, for that price and mileage, just buy it and fix everything. :)
The SE had the pretty wood interior, nardi steering wheel, 6 spd. etc.

Is there a difference between the SE and the Limited Edition?

Here is a link where you can read all about it. I would make sure it had the 1.8, and if it has the 6 speed tranny, then just look for rust. If it really has those low miles, it sounds like a deal. I too have been trolling the net looking for a good deal on a Miata. I think I would prefer a 2001 for the stiffer chasis, but the 99 is the 10th anniversary, so it's a tradeoff.

I had the six speed in our '06 Miata. I actually liked the five speed version better, even though I'm sure the six speed was designed to give the best performance. My kind of driving only required a five speed. I also found on the second gen 1999 model that the car's pedals seemed to be in a position that put me in a slight twist. I could have been wrong; but, an extended drive in one prompted me to take it back to the dealer. My back was hurting when I got done with it. I bought a used '95, instead. It was fine, as was our '06. I don't know what it was, for sure, in the '99 that did that when the others didn't. If you haven't bought it, see if you can take it for an hour drive.

It got scooped up. I'm surprised it was up as long as it was for that price. I saw a '97 with over 100,000 miles go for more than they were asking for this '99.
I'm glad someone got it. It was a demon haunting me in my dreams at night. And I just couldn't justify dropping 4k on a whim... even on a hell of a deal like this.

So, there is a 95 M edition on Craigslist for $700. The ad reads...
1995 M Edition Miata with rear axle damage for sale. Rest of car is fine. Has very nice BBS rims.$700 or best offer. Will need towing.
Has about 170k miles. I'm second or third owner. I bought it with only 40k miles. Most miles are from highway driving. 5 speed stick. Fender damage caused by neighbor accidentally backed into car.
How much would it cost for a new rear end? Car looks beat to hell though. Thought it may be a good candidate for the "Monster Miata" kit treatment. What do you think?

If you have room, I would buy it and part it out on miata.net
you could make your money back one the engine alone. Then sell the center console to me. (If its black)

for $800 that's not bad. You could get a used 1.6 for next to nothing (I got one for $250). Even if you sink a grand into it fixing it, if the rest of it's in good shape you're still ahead

the ad makes it sound like it just needs some regular maintenance, not a new motor... 160k miles isn't really that high mileage for a miata motor, either... bought the car my pops and I built into my specmiata with 198k miles on the clock
sounds like a great deal, I'd get it in a heartbeat if it was closer to me, as long as the body's straight
