Since taking the reigns at FoMoCo, Alan Mulally has made it clear that one of the keys to Ford's resurgence is to leverage its assets abroad. Specifically, he wants to utilize the automaker's platform development in Europe to maximize engineering and manufacturing efficiency, creating several global models. While we're still waiting for Ford to ditch the old Focus platform for the Euro model's underpinnings, the next major implementation of Mulally's plan will come in the form of the next Ford Fusion, which will use the current Mondeo platform.

The CD3 platform, which is derived from the Mazda6 and underpins the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln MKZ, Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, will be abandoned in favor of the Mondeo's EUCD platform and will be the foundation for Ford's global mid-size/CD-segment vehicle. Ford of Europe has been tasked with reworking the platform for the U.S., which has been internally dubbed CD4. Expect the Mondeo-based Fusion to arrive in the U.S. in 2012 for the 2013 model year.

They couldn't have thought of this a few years earlier?!...before they came up with a larger mazda6/fusion platform for the US only. Its waste's of resources like this that has put ford in the hole.

This is why Bill Ford stepped down and let Mullaly take the reigns, he knows how to consolidate and to step forward. I can't wait for the new fusion!

Finally we are getting the Mondeo in some way or another, that'll stop people's whining.

What I think is funny we had the Mondeo back in the 90s as the Contour and Mystique.

Why don't they just bring over the Mondeo and slap a Fusion badge on it. They say the global Focus is going to save them money so wouldn't it save them money if they did the same with their other cars?

I knew a couple of people who had Contours, one is still going after more than 10 years and the other never stood a chance as it was abused and wrecked more times than I remember.

Its not the easy to just slap a badge on a euro car. The vehicle has to meet US standards in crash test and EPA. Also the current Fusion has just had its midlife update.

I use to own a Contour SVT. I never had a problem with it. I sold it to a cousin who is still driving it. It has well over 160K now.

From what I understand, the SVTC's were very tempramental cars. Some had great ones, others had lemons. Besides, that Mondeo was a turd compared to the new one.

I like the 2010 Fusion, but I think they got too far away from what used to be the Taurus (the 86-96 ones, that were smaller), and all of their cars got too big too fast. This is a step in the right direction, and with a solid platform to start from, they should be a fun to drive car as well.
