Very carefully pry the radio surround trim loose, then disconnect the HVAC controls so you can pull the surround completely out. After that, I think it's just some screws on the sides of the radio. I took mine out 4 years ago so not 100% sure.

either get the tools from walmart or make your own...get a metal clothes hanger and cut two 10 or so inch pieces and make U shapes out of them...stick them in the two holes on each side of the radio and pull it out...

It's not hard but takes the right amount of force in the right place.

Pry out the blank piece between the big rotary knobs. Then gently pry the thin long plastic strips off the sides of the radio. They're to the outside of the radio, but inside the fake carbon fiber pieces.

Now, insert small flathead screwdrivers into the slots revealed under those strips. If I remember right, you need to push the butt of the screwdrivers outwards, so that their heads push tabs on inside, inwards. You can probably tell which way you need to push by a careful look into the hole using a flashlight. While you're doing that, grab the radio using the hole between the knobs, and pull out.

After removing the stock head unit, will you need to use those clips again on your aftermarket head unit?

I'm going to attempt to replace mine this weekend, but the clip on the right (passenger) side of the stock head unit appears to be bent too far outward and giving me a fit. (the U tool cannot get to the clip to push it inward). The left (driver) side works perfectly and pushs the clip inward.

I have a Kenwood head unit from Crutchfield with the mounting kit (which adds the pocket), but I'm not sure if I'll still need to use those clips or not.

Can someone advise? Thanks in advance!!

it died on me and had 5 cds stuck in it.. the LCD display didn't light up anymore and you couldn't play any music.. so i dissassembled it to get my CDs out of it and threw it away. but i did save the face from it so if you need any buttons, knobs or anything they are yours.

would anyone know if this removal is the same as my 95 protege? I am looking for instructions on my radio removal but can not seem to find any.

yeah aftermarket ones are spring loaded!
i had a bad accident to the rear/right quarter and when i hit the gaurd rail the radio flew out into the passenger seat, it could have seriously hurt someone.

ps. the wires were still connected and music was still playing afterward..lol
