Oh, come on.... if you can put an LS1 in a Civic, a Chevy 350 in a Protege should be a piece of cake.

The only additional difficulty with the Protege over this swap is the additional fabrication for the mount kit and the complete custom wiring, which would either cost a lot or require you to get on your back under the dashboard for a few weeks.

Of course, neither approach is logical... or cheap. But the answer to the "can X engine be put into X car" is almost never "no."

The only problem I see with the Mazdaspeed3 motor is the complexity of the ECU. You would likely have to resort to a standalone box to get it working.

there are so many reasons not to even consider this swap. the engine sits reverse of the protege one - intake in the front, exhaust in the back, etc. custom motor mounts would be a must. axles and transmission likely aren't a fit. the parts and engine itself are going to set you back a fair penny. ok, a fair few thousand dollars.

honestly, in my opinion, the whole "engine swap" approach to anything with these cars is pretty meritless when you look at it from the standpoint of results per dollars spent. build the engine, turbo the car and nine times out of ten you'll have spent less and be making more power than any motor you are going to swap into this car. plus, with the perhaps exception of the KLZE v6, there aren't any engines that drop right in. we sadly do not own hondas in this respect.

Errh, scrap the direct injection system, or just tune it as regular and don't bother trying for the ultra-lean burn the stock system is capable of? It might lower power output a bit, but there should be no reason you can't get it to work... in a glug-glug-sputter kind of way.

Custom-build a tubular front subframe and transplant the whole engine-drivetrain package, including the Mazdaspeed3 front suspension. Might as well get the radiator, too, while you're at it. Bolt the fenders, hood and bumper onto this. Watch the clearances... no way in hell the top mount intercooler is going to fit under the Protege hood...

Heck, if you transplant enough of the MS3... (including dashboard?) maybe you can get the stock box to work? Or would you need to transplant the rear wheels, hubs and brakes, too, so the Vehicle Stability Assist system doesn't throw a hissy fit?

It's not impossible. Just utterly, utterly... insane. Maybe $50k-$100k worth of insane (cost of donor car and work, not including swap car) I agree, building and turbocharging a Protege engine for over 300 hp is probably going to be ten times cheaper... hahaha...
