View Full Version : second gear + mid-range RPM + whirring noise???

yes, it's another one of those 'i have a noise' threads.

the instance is:
-second gear, clutch engaged
-constant throttle
-mid-range RPM's ~20-25mph

the noise is:
-RPM-dependent

the noise is a 'whirring' that could be the engine, but i am concerned that it is transmission-related. i have not noticed it in other circumstances (or other cars).

can anyone relate or offer insight on my concern? FWIW i cannot imagine i've broken second gear on a nearly new car. YET this phenomenon has occurred after i have spent time with intermittent WOT (enjoying the snow) mostly in second gear. then again, this is the only time i'd be hanging around in second at mid-range RPM's...

please let me know if you have thoughts (cheers)

Our LSD makes a bit of a whirring sound sometimes.

its this supercharger that they installed in 08

very useful... (bang) must be one of those magical superchargers that winds up when at constant speed in lower RPM's (notcool)

all cars make unique noises. if my engine/drivetrain is failing, i would simply like to get it repaired before the car fails in subzero temperatures.

FrequentFlyer - i'm assuming the whirring is normal? the ms3 is the first car i've owned that has an LSD; thankfully i've left the realm of open differentials.

I noticed that after I installed my TRZ poly mount, alot of noises have become only louder...mainly when there is load on the engine. Like a whirling noise from 1-3 gear...sounds cool, but what is it?

Does it get louder going around turns at slow speeds?

maybe a loose intercooler pipe. on my 53 foot charter boat, we had an intercoler pipe come off the starbord engine and it made a whooping noise at around 3000 rpm

there is a thread about using dif tranny fluids and the lsd noises somewhere on here that i read the other day....aparently the noise goes with fluid and temp

I thought the loud whirring noise was the 2nd turbo kicking in (scratch)

and in cometh the smart asses....HAHA....so can someone point out where the blinker fluid goes??

itsmost common after motor mount upgrade everything is stiffer and sound that was avoided using softer mount is now showing

Yup! Many sounds coming in from the engine now. I like it...but for how long? Ill find out eventually i guess. (wow)

UPDATE the initial noise i mentioned turned out to be the engine. i was driving using constant rpm's in 2nd, which i had not done before, and the engine noise caught my ear. that said, it wasn't a 'bad' noise but more of an annoying one.

i DO have an LSD-type noise, however. i thought it was my tires, but all this talk of LSD's has gotten my interest. the conditions:

1) i have Amsoil synthetic tranny fluid (prolly going to switch to MT-90)
2) crank the wheel ALL the way and drive in circles (either direction)
3) low speed, first gear

the noise i hear is a sort of howling/whirring/who knows what the hell it is. i'd be happy to post a vid, but i don't have the equipment for it...
it happens all the time. i'll also note that occasionally it becomes a higher-pitched whine, which i can also reproduce when driving w/ one wheel on ice and the other on pavement.

is this normal? any ideas?

cranking the wheel all the way either direction will make the PS pump go at it(make noise)

i know what you're referring to but i'm pretty certain this is independent of the PS pump.
