Do you know what the cap does and if it is OK to drive without the cap until I grab one from the dealer?

I believe there is a valve similar to the schrader valve on you tires that holds the freon in. The cap is just to keep it clean I believe.

Ok that makes sense, I did notice it looked similar to a tire valve inside. So it should be under $500.00 from the dealer I hope (idhitit)
Thanks for the info.

That controls your boost, you can dial-in your boost by sticking a Q-Tip into it and gently rotating the Q-Tip counter-clockwise. (2thumbs)

You can also do the same thing in your tire valves, no rotation necessary. Improves the tractions of ANY tires. Give it a shot.

I can't see the humor in that post. Some people are actually THAT stupid to believe what you said. As for me, I came in here asking for help on the subject and you come in here giving that kind of nonsense? As for the tire mod, thats real, so give it a go, all the cool kids are doing it.
Anyways, if anyone else has any info on this cap or the valve feel free to give input. Thanks

I'd get a new one to put on there sooner than never. You don't want the valve to seize up due to the elements. May even be able to get that someplace other than the dealer

This is a service valve for the air conditioning. The cap is there to keep it clean. There is absolutely no problem driving the car. Just replace it when you can. For piece of mind, you could put some good quality painter's tape (the blue or green stuff) over it to keep gunk out but it really shouldn't be necessary. Do not use duct tape or black electrician's tape because they get gooey when they get hot.

I know with my previous Subaru, that cap went missing and I just went to the dealer and they put a new one on there for free. Granted, it wasn't the exact same one that came from the factory, but it was perfectly fine. So if you have a nice dealer and you have good rapport with them, see if they'll put a new one on there for you for free. It's Christmas afterall :)

Aftermarket caps FTW.
TP Caps will improve the smell of your AC and keep the AC system clean and shiny;
However there are some who prefer KY Jelly caps, as the extra lubrication reduces parasitic drag and is good for an extra 10 WHP (More if you use a Butt Dyno).
The only drawback to the KY Caps is your AC will pick up a smell which is very different from toothpaste.

Its likely a $1 Cap from the dealer....Absolutely 0 (thats Zero) harm will be done by not having it in place for nearly any given amount of time.
Replace it when you can....And lighten up now.

I JUST FOUND THIS IN A hvac FORUM
Green slime in the oil.
Green slime is formed when there is a low side leak. This creates high temperatures which combined with water and air pulled in the system, degrades the white mineral oil by oxidation and hydrolysis. These degradation products attack the copper components and create the green oil/slime. Green slime is more prevalent in systems using a compressor that has a bronze or other largely copper containing bearing. Install a low pressure control and fix the low side leak to prevent green slime oil. Use proper refrigeration clean up procedures to remove the green slime.

true that refrigerant is colorless, but the oil may not be, and especially not if the AC had work done to it (ie replace compressor, evaporator, any lines, etc). if there has been any kind of AC problem and the vehicle was taken to a dealer or a private shop or whatever, the system is going to be recharged with a small amount of flourescent oil that looks yellow with greenish tint. this is used to diagnose a slow leak and where it is coming from.
but the "green" of it can really only be seen with light that has a special filter over it (i think infared or something, whichever one makes it look deep purple), and some yellow tinted goggles or glasses. this will make the flourescent oil stand out. and without this equipment the leak would have to be really really bad for you to be able to see it with your own eyes.
Thanks for the imput I appreciate it
and im pretty sure the op has all the info he needs, and some he doesn't
last thing i'll say about this topic is that the cap neither prevents refrigerant from escaping, nor does it prevent dirt or whatever from getting into the AC system (that's what the check ball within the valve is for). it simply protects the service valve itself from getting dirt or grime or whatever ON it. it's no different than a tire valve stem cap. if it gets dirty it might be a little more difficult to service the AC, just like it could be harder to fill your tire with air if the valve stem got all dirty and stopped functioning properly. that's why i'd get it replaced sooner than never, or else you'll just end up forgeting about it.
just make sure you get the right cap for it if you order it from the dealer or buy it at a store. high side has a bigger cap, low side has a smaller cap. you can tell if you look at the other service valve and compare sizes
