View Full Version : Clutch/Transmission Knocking when in traffic

I couldn't find any other way to describe this but to say "in traffic". Anyway, there is a knocking sound that comes from the drivers side when I am on and off of the clutch in traffic (stop and go). I could even feel it through the clutch pedal. Mostly happens on acceleration and then depressing the clutch again to stop or slow down. And, usually only in first gear, sometimes in second and third.
The transmission is new (replaced because of throwout bearing) and the clutch has about 105K km's on it. I do experience clutch chatter under light acceleration.
I'm hoping it's only the clutch but something tells me other things like transmission mount or cv or axle? I don't know. Any ideas?

Just noticed, that it happened on start up this morning as well as letting off of the gas when in second or third. I'm thinking something is definitely loose. It's not the endlinks because I just changed those and the clutch actually engages fine, except for the chatter.

did you check your mounts my front mount went out I replaced it with a sls and my front bumber started vibrateing so hard at idle it would make ticking noises freaken hated it. and at acceleration it would sound like the tranny was fallin apart. I replaced that mount and put the old oem mount with a polyurathane insert and it fixed about 90% of all my problems i still have a tiny bit of viberation but it doesnt compare to before.

You said you could feel it in the clutch pedal, could you elaborate? Does it vibrate or is it a jolt? Could possibly be a pressure plate issue given the amount of K/m on the clutch and the chatter noise. A jolt would possibly inidicate a broken pp spring, vibrations usually mean bad tob

Yeah, you can sometimes feel it in the clutch pedal. Kind of like a bump when the noise happens. It's very faint though.

I'd still say there's a problem with the pressure plate, if it *only* happens when you're on/off the clutch then there's a problem with the clutch sticking and it suddenly poping out. The fact that there's no vibration in the pedal itself means the slave cylinder and T-O bearing are working at least partialy, and the fact that you can still engage/disengage might mean that it's enganging good, but might not be fully disengaging and suddenly poping out under acceleration.
Before you rip the tranny out though, check your tranny mounts for cracks, and make sure all the transmission/engine bolts are good and tight, inspect the control arms too while you're under there.

Hey, thanks for all the help. I'll have to check things out when it gets a little warmer here. If it gets worse before the weather gets better, well, then off to the dealer I go.

After driving the car around more I can definitely rule out the clutch as being the culprit. Well, except for the chatter. But the knocking and the knocking noise happens whenever I let go of the gas. So essentially whenever the motor and/or transmission moves.
My question is, is there only one transmission mount and 3 motor mounts? I know my rear motor mount is probably shot. I have both the SLS front and side.

there were two tranny mounts on my ATX, I would think there are two for the MTX, there's the one that attaches to the driver body and one in the rear that attaches to the subframe, both relatively easy to look at from underneath. If you only have two SLS mounts, the extra vibration they cause could have ripped/damaged the remaining rubber mounts.. so it's plausable.

Check the rear mount where it bolts to the trans through the block.. Also check the trans mount.. Sounds as if the bolts are loose.. If it vibrates when cruising, then Im 100% sure thats the problem..
btw, there are 3 trans mounts and 1 engine mount..

Im confused. You replaced your tranny because the throwout bearing went bad. If im not mistaken, the throwout bearing is what rides between your clutch fork and the pressure plate and allows your clutch to spin as you press the clutch in. You get a new bearing when you buy a new clutch. Also who replaced your tranny? Wouldn't they notice your tranny mount falling apart when they took it out? I know mine was pretty tore up. It sounds like you got robbed.

I thought the same thing when they (the dealer) said they would just replace my tranny with a new one. For just a throwout bearing? I guess so? Apparently it was cheaper for them to just replace the whole thing. It was all under warranty so no, I did not get robbed. At the time, it was a new process that they were "trying" or implementing.
As for the mount, it was still good (at least I think) because the car was driving just like I drove it off the lot. Except for the whirring of the bearing.

sounds like a mount or they forgot tighten something down all the way and it finally vibrated off. take it back to the dealer and have them check their own work.

Bump. I have the exact same problem. Bucks on startup and when I let off the gas in 2nd or 3rd gear. Did you ever find out what it was?
I have MM inserts and an AWR front MM stock rear.

I still haven't been able to check as it's still too damn cold here. Anyway, I'm thinking I will just go ahead and replace and re-replace ALL my mounts. I currently have the SLS front and passenger side mounts installed. If that doesn't fix it then off to the dealer I go.

How many miles do you have on your car? I have 88k. I just bought the midevil rear MM because mine is shot. I'll update after install.

This might sound a little crazy..... Try changing your tranny fluid.....Not sure if the dealer put the right fluid back in...... I had the same problem. When I let the clutch out in 1st gear, it would make a clicking/popping noise...almost a thumping noise, that I could hear and feel on the driver side in the clutch pedal. I thought the same thing, that it was my motor mounts...Then I thought it was my clutch.....maybe my LSD.....maybe something in my tranny........SO.... I bought a new clutch and welded lsd from Protege garage. Thinking that if I had these parts put in by the local speed shop that either the parts would fix the problem or the speed shop would see the problem when they had the tranny apart. It sounds like an expensive way to go but I had the money to blow at the time.....I ordered the parts and while they were on the way...I told a friend about my problem and that I ordered the parts.....He said to me, DIDNT YOU GET YOUR TRANNY FLUID CHANGED A WHILE AGO BY VALVOLINE( It was winter and I didnt have a place to change my oil and they talked me into getting me tranny fluid changed- My car had 60,000 miles on it and I thought it would be a good idea to change it).....So, I thought about it and decided that they probably put the wrong fluid in it....So I went to my buddys garage, drained and filled the tranny with mobile 1 75w90..........I drove the car right after and it still mad the popping noise.......It wasnt until I drove the car for a week that the noise stopped...........AND YES, THE WEEK AFTER I GOT THE PARTS, I STILL HAD THE SPEED SHOP CHANGE OUT EVERYTHING......

So I ordered the Midieval Rear Motor Mount and installed it yesterday and what a difference it makes! It totally fixed the problem I was having, shifting is fun now, and the car has a lot more power it seems. It was sort of a pain to get to and it took about 3 hours with a friend to swap and we had to dremel out one of the mount screws a little to get it to fit, but it is definitely worth the trouble. The vibes aren't too bad either IMO.
The old mount was ripped big time:D

It's fine but I think it is pretty soft. I have a really old rewelded AWR front mount. I don't even notice the vibes except with my GPS.
