My car was broken into and the tore apart my center console to get the radio out. The lower half where all the heating/AC controls are appear untouched (not physically harmed) from the outside and all the plugs still intact.

However, I cant turn the vent-control knob counter-clockwise past straight down, while it sonds ot be adjusting vents, they no-longer appear to turn on/off the air control theyre supposed to (ie I have no defroster, and dash vents are always on), the temp control knob doesnt control the temperature, the circultion selector doesnt work (stuck on outside air even when pressed), and the AC button doesnt light up or turn the AC on...basically the whole climate control panel is dysfuntional - other than the abilty to adjust fan speed that is.

How could them ripping my radio out have effected all these functions when all the cables and connectors to the climate control system seem to be in place and untouched? My local mazda service (not my favorite), suggested I call my insurance because "it sounds like its going to be expensive" but if it was totally fine before, the theives didnt seem to touch it all, could there just be a cable or plug or something that may have come loose that I cant seem to find (and isnt in the workshop manual), that can quickly fix this?

Id very much appreciate any ideas on what could cause these problems..

I would double check the cables. they may be attached by the loop, but there is a clip that holds the sheath of the cable in place.

I would think that if your getting air movement then its just the cables, there's no electronics controlling them.

just reread about A/C: maybe a fuse was burnt out when they ripped out the stereo. did they just rip it out, cut the wires or actually undo the harness?

yea, thats what it was - I figured it out of course after bringing it down to a local service shop, them telling me "it wasn the cables" and ordered me a whole new knob-control unit. That night, I was working on my car a bit, and took a few minutes to look into this more, and sure enough, the cable had simply slipped out of that anchor clip on the drivers side - left a message withthe shop manager reeming out the 'service' I had received and will be getting my monday refunded :)
