Whilst perched atop my throne (Ferguson, the king of toilets) I read that the new for 09 WRX hits 60 in 4.7 seconds YET has the same HP per lb as the MS3.
I know there are a ton more variables here...but hypothesising swampass says we'd prob do about the same stock if we were AWD.
Since my car isn't stock, I'm going to lie to all the kiddies at *car night that my car tags it in 4.5 second.
*If I ever attend a car night.

I would imagine a hard AWD launch has a lot to do with that time, so make sure you're not lying to a WRX fanboy.

so what does 40 more hp (it's 305 right?) do for the sti?
CnoTataymo
12-17-2008, 08:37 PM
If the MS3 were AWD, it would probably weight more and weight more then the WRX.
And the extra 40 horsepower the STI has, supposedly the WRX is still faster then it. Only thing that sucks about the WRX is the tranny. I've heard a lot of stories about them getting messed up.

If the ms3 were awd i'd say it would hit that time pretty easily.
Ya like pcspeed3 says there are a few with eng issues, but subaru is replacing them and there are not alot of reports compared to the amount already sold. hopefully they get these issues worked out asap.
The 09 is a powerful beast forsure! when nasioc comes back online ( i guess they are doing maint on the forum) i'll post up the link where folks are making crazy power on stg1 and stg2 cobb maps. The new turbo on the 09 is awsome!

AWD = all the difference when launching. they say that a good AWD launch feels like getting rear-ended by a dump truck.
ms3 has less drivetrain loss, which might explain why it can take a wrx from a roll. additionally, while the ms3 doesn't have the prettiest powerband ever, i think the wrx is dead below 4k..?
and it doesn't surprise me that wrx's are popping when nearly brand new. a number of sti's have had engine rebuilds due to leaning out when hitting the rev limiter, which has killed the engine compression after a few trips to the limiter. those issues were mostly due to bad ECU management.
is it possible that subaru decided to throw a bunch more power into the new wrx to boost sales, but did so without actually making sure the engine/drivetrain could handle it?

Look at the graphs from cobb....on the stg2 graph at 4k rpm it's make good hp and a heck of alot of tq.
To answer your ? ...of course they made it with more power to boost sales...and because the 08 sucked badly...they had to improve it and fast. engine/drivetrain - noone knows yet. But my now outdated 07 has taken a beating and keeps on tickin.
as far as transmissions go...here is a good thread with good examples of people make good power on the stock so called "glass" trans ..

glass trans on the wrx was only pre 05

perhaps i spoke too soon about the subie making power. the exhaust on the stg2 certainly helped i'm sure.
i just don't know how the new wrx can have more boost and thus more power in such a short timespan. subaru might suffer in the long run if a bunch of engine rebuilds are in order.
the 'glass' tranny may be a thing of the past, but i'm still skeptical. if i wanted to make big power on a subaru, i'd prolly either go for an sti with its stronger drivetrain or plan on upgrading the wrx drivetrain.

it's all due to 3 things - bigger turbo than the 08 / larger freer flowing exhaust than the 08 / and the tune from the factory is dif. ( which maybe the issue with the engines like the 07 sti had).

i certianly hope you are right...there seems to be very very few threads that i have read where the newer models had issues with the trans. and if they are they were either launching the car wrong or they had done a big turbo swap and are making crazy hp.

For now I'll take it slow. I have 1100miles on the clock. But when I bought the car I emailed Cobb to see if they were coming for something for the 09's and he told me it was in progress. I then read this thead today and saw your links and saw the numbers and they are pretty impressive for whats been done. So yes whatever is needed to run Stage1 and stage2 I want eventually.
Yes the interior is nice. Almost as nice as the Speed3. Just needs WRX on the cluster and its a done deal. But is has moonroof and heated seats and that I'm glad to get back :)
I bought the hatch simply because I'm so used to have one and that its so useful. But look-wise the sedan hands down. But for me it was a no-brainer.

Missed a few words so it didnt make sense so let me rephrase...or even better I'll quote somedody else that reviewed it:
Out at the track, the new and improved WRX launches hard; all four tires spin as the car leaps forward as if it were rear-ended by a bus. A mere 1.6 sec pass before 30 mph is reached, a time on par with the new BMW M3 and Cadillac CTS-v. Sixty mph comes in 4.7 sec, and the five-door, five-passenger hatchback we tested covered a quarter mile in 13.5 sec at 101.1 mph

I believe the WRX can hit 60 in 2nd gear before they run out of gear thus their 0-60 is fast. I read in road and track a little tidbit in their test stats section that they posted the 0-60 leaving it in 2nd gear but when doing the 1/4 mile they had a slower 60mph time due to the fact it was actually more ideal to shift sooner to maintain the car in its power band. I wish our 1st 2nd weren't so close.
I'm glad the WRX's are getting back to where they were.

FYI, buddy of mine took my bone stock MS3 down a track with a 0-60 of 4.1 and 1/4 mile of 13.9. "Official" numbers for comparison is a joke, since none of them are with the same driver, and the driver has a LOT to do with how fast the car goes.
Comparatively, my fastest times were 0-60 5.0 and 1/4 mile of 15.

that's cool man! i should be running at or very close to a 12 sec 1/4 mile pass. I just added a GM BCS and reflashed to a dif. map. car is making a ton of tq now. comparing it to some that are dynoing sim. mods are around the 250 whp / 330 ft lb ot tq mark. Then the dashhawk needs to be checked as its fubar.. no way in hell a MS3 is pulling 4.1 secs 0-60MPH - getting times faster than of cars with 2x the HP and same weight should have hinted that maybe the measuring stick was scrwed up

a 4.1sec 0-60 time is RIDICULOUS. i don't buy it. i might concede that an excellent driver could pull a low 5sec time, but not a low 4.
BUT i could foresee the ms3 holding its own against a new sti/evo FROM A ROLL. the power difference is slight; and consider the curb weight:
evo = 3517lb
sti = 3395
ms3 = 3153
the lower weight and smaller drivetrain loss (FWD versus AWD) could favor the ms3 from a roll. from a stop, however, the evo and sti would destroy the ms3. and an intake can bump the ms3 up to 275-290hp (theoretically) which reduces the margin further.
