Well my next oil change is up soon and like most my car has a case of the white lung.. I want to try a thicker/heavier oil, but I don't understand what the components in the title mean. Right now I'm using 5w-30. So should I go to 10w-30, 5w-40, or 10w-40 lol.. I know it has to do with temp, I will be living in Arizona again in Jan if thats any help.

Not an expert on this, but isn't your down pipe the contributing factor to your smoking issue?

exactly wisniaPl has it right. even with new turbo people still smoke so that isn't a solution. i've switched to 5w40 and what do you know stopped smoking. if you live in a warmer climate you might want to go 10w40. i'll probably switch to that in the spring.

At what oil change would you recommend/does Mazda recommend to switch to synthetic?

I've had my turbo replaced.... still smokes. Tried using synthetic.... still smokes. Now I am going to try the 5w-40. I am also runnig a full turbo back with no cats or muffler. One thing that I have been doing at stop lights, hold the r.p.m. at 1500. A little loud but f@$k it!

Im gonna try the shell rotella and see what happens. As for when my car starts smoking, I'm more worried about a cop seeing my retarded cloud at a light which screams "I have cats!" /sarcasm

I havent noticed any performance losses other than my turbo leaks a tiny amount of oil, Im talking like 3-4 drops inbetween changes. How is this detrimental ? I know Im probably taking half the life off my turbo but shit, I wont have this car in 4 years, and I'll probably get the reworked ko4 prior to that point with some fresh sealz fo sho! --- Other than the unattractive smoke, why is everyone freaking out ? OH NOES TEH SMOKE HAS COME MY CAR IS WORTHLESS!!
