my buddy had that problem in 3rd to and it was the synchros so i would just take it to the dealer and have them fix it
My brothers speed3 08.5 did the same thing to me when I first drove it; and it was about 1 week old at the time. But he's never really complained about it??...

my car does the same... i get the grind from shifting from 3rd to 4th though. It feels like its preventing me from getting the gear in all the way. On the other forum (mazda3furumz) some people said after they changed the tranny oil it went away or reduced.

Get TWM bushings and some Redline MT-90.

Most of our cars do this. The bushings and MM inserts helped for me. When I put in the TRZ rear mount, I could finally do the 2-3 shift fast without grinding.

i got the mounts, bushings, and royal purple syncroshift fluids and i still have trouble getting into 2 and 3 when driving aggressive. i have just learned you have to be easy with it no matter what you have done to improve the situation.

You replace the synchro.
Each time this happens, you are doing more damage to the synchro. If this has been happening alot, you've likely done enough damage to it to require replacement. It's only going to get worse, unfortunately.
As to the original cause, it's difficult to shift this crappy transmission quickly, and easy to damage the synchros if you are not extremely careful.

its a good idea to take it to the dealer. (sorry) you will at least have a record of the problem. i guess you are somwhat lucky, some members cant even get it in 3rd gear!! mine is somewhat retarded going into first. people consider me retarded so it is a match made in heaven.

If you go to a dealer to replace your synchro's and youve got a short shifter with bushings do you think they would blame that and refuse to fix it?

it's possible that, at WOT, the movement of the engine/transmission/car can make shifting difficult. the grinding may be because the shift linkage is altered by the WOT movement and cannot engage the gear as normal.
you might be able to help the issue with
-new transmission fluid
-engine mount upgrades
-shifter upgrades
but, as jjjxlr8 said, damage of synchro's is irreversible. i hope that you haven't ground often; i think i may have ground 1 or 2 shifts since buying the car, but, in those cases, i never forced the gear. i'm sure i did a little damage but nothing that will cause the transmission to fail in the near term.
and, chrisp, calm down. your opinion of how well a person drives is ENTIRELY irrelevant to this discussion, which, if you read the original post, relates to transmission grinding and how to fix it. the OP would most likely be shifting too fast if it were his fault, and that can be driver skill but also transmission shortcomings. it doesn't seem like you've made any friends through your 26 posts on these forums, either, given what MSP2024 said.

YES.

YES.
Haha I know, just thought I'd throw that out there. Mazda dealers (and most others) will try and blame you for everything so they wont have to do anything.

The cause of the 3rd gear mis-shift/grind is the stock rear motor/tranny mount. The stock mount allows the engine/tranny to sway during WOT and stretches the shifting cables that preevents 3rd gear engagements; along with 2nd gear popouts, etc.
Just by simply replacing the rear motor/tranny mount with a TRZ Poly or similar, you will have a perfect shifting tranny at any load...
Upgrading the fluid will only make the tranny smooth...the shifter bushings will not help with 3rd gear grind.

Does the tranny mount cause any extra vibrations and/or put any additional stress on the drivetrain or other mounts?

since we are talking about our tranny here instead of opening up a new thread why not just discuss here.
My clutch feels like its going out. I don't have to push it all the way to engage it . I only need to press it a quarter of the way to get into gear.....and also it only feels crisp early in the morning. In the morning it feels like a ON/OFF switch how i want it to be but after the first few miles of driving it will warm up and just give a jelloish feel to it.

It does introduce a little vibration to the cabin... You will feel it most under A/C usage and 4K-3K RPM decel...
It will take that new smooth (if the engine on?) feel away. But the benefits totally out-weigh the vibes you have to live with.
As far as additional stress, it actually reduces stress to the other mounts (side mounts) and does not cause any ill effects to other components.

Still trying to find out if there is a Dealer Service Bullentin on this or just a random issue. I have the shifter bushings and rear motor mount replaced, just got new tranny fluid on the 30k service too - still get a bounce off the gear on WOT shifts into 3rd.

how long would it take the dealer to change a syncro?
