Any experienced triathletes out there? Im thinking about training but im not too thrilled about losing 2 years of muscle mass from bodybuilding.

Would you consider the experience worth it?

I was a cyclist and started into tri's during college ( I don't have the time to train for the as much in med school). Man I loved them, great experience. The longest I did was 1/2 Iron Man, best/hardest physical challenge of my life. Just make sure you intake calories during the race, I boinked during the run on a few races and it is never fun to walk a few miles, lol.

Hey im in med school and im still training !! Just my 1st year though.

Ironmans and even 1/2 ironmans are insane. I would like to do 1 in my lifetime but its just too hard on my body. I already suffered a stress fracture training for marathons.

The other day I did my first training mini triathlon. I swam about 2 miles, biked about 20, then "ran" 8 miles. Hardest run of my life.

Seems a lot easier when you just do just 1 excersize like a 20 mile bike ride. After im still tired but in my mind im like, "oh yeah I can run 10 miles no prob."

Simple answer... yes.

You can always gain the muscle back, but you will have better cardiovascular health to build on.

not say that you cant do it with lots of muscle, but it will defin make it easier. i started cycling when i was working out, i was 210 6', which is big for my natural build of 135-140. currently im 143, and at the fastest that i have ever been. basicaly its easier to move less lean muscle (weight wise) than it will be to move more heavier muscle. like lightening up a car.

This thread is back from teh dead !! Im pretty involved in tri training now. Im also happy because im keeping my 168 lb weight and hitting the gym just as hard.

I suck at swimming :(. So boring to train and a PITA. You have to train your cycling !! Cycling / Running is what makes / breaks your time. Wish I was better at swimming though. My goal is just to conserve energy during the swim.

There are four important thing to train for triathlon,

1. Swimming
2. Cycling
3. Running
4. Nutrition (the longer the distance, the more important this gets)

What distance do you do ross? I do olympics mostly and a few sprints to boost my confidence by passing tri newbs :). Best time so far was a 1:57 in a lake swim.

I have a whole pile of Sprints, one Olympic in 2007, a HIM last year, and this year I will be doing a sprint, then a HIM, then a full IM.
