IIRC there is another member running 215/45/16 on his stock wheels and is very pleased with them.
If you didn't want to go that wide you can run a 205/50/16 and 205/45/16 will also work. This will also give you a lot more options to choose from than the stock 195/50.

My MP3 came stock with 215/45/17 and I'm sure you have the same wheel well. I had 235's on it for a little but it scraped really bad, for sure dont go that wide

yeah I realy don't want to go as wide as 235 especially on the stock mp5 wheels I don't know the width of the wheel. I think 215 or 210 is where I would like to go

No such thing as a 210. While people have made 215/45 work I wouldn't go any wider than a 205 series tire. The only problem is that all 205 series don't really match our stock tire size very well. 205/50 is noticeably larger and 205/45 is noticeably smaller. If you really want to go wider stick with the 205/50. 215 series tires are usually meant for 7-8" wide wheels.

215 40 16s here. I love the extra grip, and there's not much speedo error. It made a big difference over my 205s, but the choices are limited as to the tires you can get. Don't go larger than a 45 series with 215s, you'll have a really tall sidewall.

I am. Dunlop Direzzas are a popular choice for this size, but they're a summer tire so you'll have to do a different set for winter if you have a lot of snow. I run all-season Hankook Ventus HRIIs...they're cheap, grippy and do fine for the small amount of snow we get here in KY.

If you REALLY want to run a 215 series tire get the 215/45R16's as they are the closest to the stock size and will not throw off the speedo too much.

My speedo doesn't really run much of an error...maybe 2mph @ 65mph as best I can measure it. It's really not a huge difference...I think the smaller tire counters some of the error built into the speedo at the factory.

I was told the factory speedo was inaccurate already and that a 215/45R17 wheel/tire gave the most accurate results when compared with a GPS. I currently have a MSP gauge cluster and 215/40R17 tires and my speedo typically reads about 1-2 mph slower than those radar-sign-things.

thanks, i did some digging and figured this would be the best size to stick with.

The only issue you'll run into is that the cheapest in 215/45 start at $100 and there's no real all-season option (if you're looking to drive in any snow at all with them). Unless you want "extreme performance summer" your next option is the Direzzas around $130 a tire, then up the scale from there. I'm just saying you can get the Hankook I have (all-season) in 215/40s from onlinetires.com for like $55 and the speedo tradeoff isn't too bad...I too find my speedo to be 1-2mph slower than the radar signs, for whatever that's worth.

i would like to have some really nice summer tires. i dont mind saving pennies over the winter till spring before i get something. right now im just doing research trying to figure out what people have had luck with, and are pleased with. does the 40 leave a huge gap in the wheel well? i want to lower it later, but that wil not be till many months from now

Here, play with this a bit to get a feel for the different tire sizes and all. IIRC, the stock wheels are 16x6 +50:

Meh, the gap isn't humongous, but it's bigger than stock for sure...I'm hoping to lower eventually, so it doesn't bother me too much. I was really just looking for the contact patch and grip increase.

I'm running a 215/45/17 on my stockers
but, my stockers are MSP stockers. I get no rubbing.
Callie is running 215/45/17's on her wheels, but her offset is not right and it grinds like you wouldn't believe on the rear wheelwell. I NEED to get a fender roller and SOON!

All this is mainly dependent on whether your car is lowered or not, what size the rim is & what the offset of the rim is. Depending on those things, use the tire size calculator linked above. It'll give you diferences in size, width & speedo offness.

You could, but why? It'd be quite a bit taller than the stock tiresize.

You could; that's my snow tire size. I wouldn't go to a 55 series though. Great for the winter, but the sidewall is massive.

If you can find them in the particular tire you want 205/50R16 is the way to go. Check out the link I posted a few posts up.

I have 205/40/16's on 16x7 rims. They're stretched on the rim and they are super small. I guess if they were on the stock rim they would be a little taller but they are still really small.

205/50R 16 Goodyear Eagle ResponsEdge on our P5.
Good research at TireRack.com. Read and heard good things about the Kumho's. Ended up getting the Goodyears at Sam's club. Needed a local shop for the ladies in the house. Plus $50 off right now.
So far, so good. Gripped well in the rain. Need some snow to see how they are.
