LOL yeah history will be made alright.
Are you really really sure you think you can get those to fit? I've done all kinds of measuring and calculations and the only way I figured I could get a set of 18x9s to fit with a decent size tire (i.e. not stupid stretched but an actual functional tire in a 235/40 or 245/40 size) was to go with a 38-35 offset, 2.3 degrees neg camber in the front, 1.8 in the rear, and no lower then a .2" ride hidth.
But if you pull it off with out compromising much suspension geometry or integrity I'll be very interested. I love the Subies, especially the 08 STIs, in the 18x9 sizes. I'd love to give my MS3 the look and performance from that size.

11-12-2008, 01:49 AM
Oh hey, it's Dan's car.
You can't fit that offset. Not for the rear anyways. Oh, yeah you do need camber. lol
CnoTataymo
11-12-2008, 02:42 AM
Good luck. I was planning to test fit some 18x9 Rota's at Wheeldudes since Zoeb said I could but I usually work during the weekdays and they're closed on weekends. I can't wait to see how it'll look. I believe 255 tires would be too wide unless they are 35 series tires. And you would need a good amount of camber in the rear.
madvillian
11-12-2008, 02:49 AM
thanks guys, I never said it was going to be easy, but I got a hell of a deal for taking the risk and I have to get it to work. im running coilovers, so i've got a shitload of camber, and ride height is fully adjustable if i need to raise it up a bit. and yeah, the tires are 255/35
tigermack
11-12-2008, 03:04 AM
Running coilovers do not mean you get shitload of camber. lol

all i can say is that when the STI's came out a few years ago, everyone said that there was no way in hell an 18x9 would fit, and look at them now. someones just gotta DO it and everyone else will follow! haha this time, im going to be the pioneer.

trust me, I've measured it all out. don't worry about it, i never said it would be easy, but its going to happen, im going beyond the simple fender rolling. depending on how it goes, yes, they may stick out a bit, but i dont care. its going to look mean as hell.

already have coils, and theyre super stiff right now and i love it. i have about a half inch between the plastic directly above the tire and have never rubbed once, so i know i dont have much travel. without coilovers, theres no way to do this, even on the stock "monster truck" height, it would be way too mushy.

if you have coilovers thats a diff story make them as stiff as possible and it will worg you migh only rub on front when wheels are fully turned:)

also, i opted out of the 255's for fear of not having enough strut clearance, so i went with 245's.

oh, and let me just say that the black wheels will be for sale in a couple days, let me know if anyones interested. id prefer to sell them with the potenzas (they only have 5,000 miles on them) and i have brand new black muteki lugs to throw in as well. let me know if you're interested, ill take more close-up pictures of them and the tires when the time comes.

no rubbing at all with the wheel fully turned, i think because these are 245/35's rather than 215/45's but i'm rubbing in the back.
wastegate, if you can't tell how far the stick out from the 50 pictures i posted, i dont know what to tell you..
I can see that they have a lot of poke to them. You have ignited a lot of interest on the boards for others wanting to go the same route. If I were interested in running a setup similar to yours I would want to see the angle I inquired about before I laid down my hard earned dollhairs on some wheels and tires. If you don't wanna post it that's fine but don't knock the question.

Sarcastic maybe, but never meant to be negative. I honestly didn't think you'd be able to run a tire on them and for that I applaud your efforts. Without people willing to push the envelope and try what is supposed to be impossible we'd all be driving Ford Model T's. Nice work. (headbang)

What brand are the old wheels?
The new set up is sick!!! Big props on having the balls! I'd love to do the Rotas in 9" width but I was looking at the 35 offset instead of 30, and with only a 235/40 tire.
In the rear, it rubbing the inner portion and how is the brake clearance?
madvillian
11-18-2008, 10:34 PM
break clearance is cool, strut clearance is fine, im just rubbing on the fender. and i wouldn't let 5mm of offset change your mind, thats an extremely small number. and you have to go with something fatter than a 235! i wish i wouldn't have pussied out of the 255's, they will fit.

Better to have gone smaller and know you can upsize when you need new tires than to buy too big and have to unload brand new tires as used after you mount them.

good, thats what i like to hear. at the height shown above, there is no rubbing, but i want the rear to be lower, im still trying to think of more solutions to getting another quarter inch out of that rear quarter panel. the front's aint a problem, i could probably go even lower but im not going to risk it, and i didn't have to make any adjustments or even roll the fenders. i hope that more people jump on the bandwagon because more solutions will rise as we go on, but again i have to say that i truly dont think this is possible without coilovers, id like for you to prove me wrong, but i dont think its possible..

Just a little too much. If you were a 1/2" skinnier, it might look OK, but that's just too much poke. It looks OK on the VW's that do that all the time, but doesn't fit with out cars.

madvillian
12-04-2008, 02:15 AM
the car really feels amazing, idk if its because of going from a 45 tire to a 35, the width of the tire, the better tire, the wider tire, or the combination, but the car feels much better. torque steer is a bit more noticeable, but i can live with that. the alignments fine and i still need to go get one!

I feel you.. Im running a set of WORK VS-XX's 18 x 8 in the front 18x9 on 225's all around .I also have the BC coilovers. All my clearance is good but these freakin MAZDA fenders.
I have rolled them as much as you possibly can and still I rub while making aggresive hard turns.. ONLY in the rear though. I refuse to flare them out cause it will cringe and mess up the paint and not look clean at all.(gun)

ok... old guy opinion...
and by the way.... i take offense to this comment...
"even on the stock "monster truck" height" :)
-madvillagecrazymanguy
this is a LOW car to begin with... add my 240lb frame (and add one of my friends as a passenger).... and VOILA! instant ride height adjustment.... and believe me, you would not want to drive that thing on the uneven concrete freeways we have here in texas... not unless you are also familiar with the way they break horses in this fine state... :)
low, light ass car... stiff ass suspension... super low ass profile tires... YEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! oh yeah... and your a woosie if you have to use two hands on the wheel... hehehehe
i have to say the new photos make it look better... much better... i would have to say, YOU WIN! i don't think you can go much wider than that...
i followed this thread a bit... just to see how it would work out... i thought it would look a bit mickey mouse go cart style... but it really doesn't ... i agree that raising it a bit (just a touch) in the front would complete the look.. it would even it back out. it would make it look less 'worn out front suspension'.... remember, you don't have to be the lowest anymore... now you are the widest... yeah.
also... i'm wondering who the next one will be to step up with the 18X9s and use a bit more offset to get them back under a bit more... hmmmmm

I'm on stock Potenza tires and rims and was wondering if I'll still have big wheel spin after burning out at the drag strip. I'm going to one on Saturday morning and want to see how well I do against other students at UTI. Will I still have considerable wheel spin if I drop the clutch at 4k RPM, will there be just a small chirp, or will my tires just catch traction all the way from the beginning?
ericrapp
03-06-2009, 08:20 AM
No traction on stockers even if you soft pedal. I thought it very hard to launch at the drag strip so i went alittle wider and alot softer that helped

Most people say they were rated as pretty good, i guess i never liked them. I could not tell when they were going to break away turning. I bought the nittos and my driving confidence went through the roof. Of course thet wear quickly and do not like rain very much but are nice track tires. I spent a couple weekends at the 1/4 mile on stock tires trying to get a 60 ft worth a damn including 2nd gear launch, rolling out at 2000 rpm and istill could not get under 13.5 and about 2.4 in the 60. That was just with intercooler and mm upgrade. There are lots of opinions about tires. But i did not like them. also i do not think the potenzas needed warm up to get traction. The nittos do though. Good luck and have fun you will get the hang of it and if you wear out the stock tires at the track try a 225/40 and or a little more aggressive tire. The Potenzas did make for great smoke shows though!

meh im not sure what the stock setup is on the 2010, aren't the stock wheels a bit wider now? if thats the case, there may be a bit more room. regardless, you certainly won't be able to bolt them on and drive off. you will need a fender roller, a heat gun, and lots of beer. a nice coilover setup always helps too, with looks and performance. if you get serious about buying a pair of wheels and need help, PM me, i'm always happy to help.
