View Full Version : Vacuum Leak?

I've been researching vacuum levels and it looks like I have a leak somewhere because I'm reading -0.62 and I'm seeing that it should be around -0.20. How do I find where I'm leaking? Where are the most common spots? Should I just get the HOSE TECHNIQUES Hose Kit from corksposrt and redo all the hoses?
I'm about to put the 626 Manifold on and I'm guessing a leak might mess it up. Is a leak really that big of a deal because it still drives fine to me?

it wouldnt hurt to put in all new hoses but usually there will be a split hose that is causing the leak.

i have that kit on my car they tend to pop off eazy on the 626 mani, but there is quite a few places to check so it would probably be eazyer just to change them out

Vac leaks are the main causes to the majority of the problems I have had on my MSP.

That's what I was hoping. I'm at 18 at idle.

It should be over 20, some cars vary but a good number is 21-22. I would usually hold 23 but since I haven't been driving it a lot it holds around 15 then as I drive it'll go back up in the 22 range. I rarely drive the MSP now.

21 at idle but in between shifts it seems to go real high at like..24 or 25..could this be a problem? its only in between shifts tho! also i know this is off topic somewhat but i do alot of searching on the 626 mani and iam stumped. which one is actually the RIGHT one to get?? 2001 VTCS or whatever? or 2000 w/o VTCS? please set me on a clear path guys! countless hours of searching really derive me from psychology homework!!

The 2000 626 mani is the one you want.
Also, to you guys that are reporting higher numbers.. do you have stock manifolds?

Well damn. I replaced some of the main vacuum lines that I thought might be a problem (WGA and all lines around the joep boost controller) but to no avail. How does one go about chasing a vacuum leak? I've heard the OEM BPV tends to leak. How could I test that?

Yeah, I just took it out and I still had the same leak. So here is my the setup all plugged in.

When I unplug the vac gauge on one side and plug it up like in the below picture their is no change in vac pressure (still -.70). But if I let go and let it remain unplugged the vac pressure goes to -.20 like its supposed to be. Does anyone know where i should look for a leak now?

Also does anyone know if this open pipe is supposed to connect to anything or is it supposed to open.

Uhhh.. you just have a random unplugged vacuum hose sitting there?
SeR_Cyclops

you should not have a open hose.

That's pretty much the definition of a vacuum leak.. a pretty big one too.

Well does anyone know where it goes? That is on the back of the Intake Manifold. Also the vac gauge doesn't change if I put my thumb over it.

So it's not actually sucking in any air through that hose? It's just a hose hooked up to a dead end?

that hose looks like part of the joeP fuel pressure regulator kit, it should be attached to the air intake. you could leave it open, but it's recommended by joe himself to be plugged into the intake. get a longer piece of hose and a nipple, and tie it in to your intake piping. there might already be a nipple on the underside of the intake piping if this was installed by a previous owner. make sure the arrow on the check valve (the white plug between the hoses) is pointing in the direction of the intake, away from that little red hose. it was designed to lean out the fuel a little and help with hesitation.

That was probably going to a boost gauge at one time. I tapped that line for mine. If your not going to use that source just put a fresh hose on there.

So I decided to update you all on my "leak." I have the Blitz Dual Turbo timer/boost gauge and it reads in bar. I did some research online and I see that most of you have a boost/vacuum gauge that reads boost in psi and vacuum in inHg. I have been totally off with my units and I actually have good numbers when I convert to inHg. I'm at about 800ft AGL and I'm reading around 23inHg when it's warmed up so it looks like I never really had a leak. At least my engine bay looks a little nicer with silicone hoses.

23 is good, that's what I had before. I don't drive the car a lot lately and it'll go down to 8-9 then gradually back up to around 20. If I drive it every day it's around 22 or a little higher.
