View Full Version : Advice on Auxmod?

I recently purchased an 06 Mazda5. It has this silly little cable for an Ipod connection to the stereo. I call it silly because I don't own an Ipod, and have no desire to own an Ipod. I'm sure for those of you who use Ipods, it's cool.

I do, however, have other mp3 and audio equipment I would like to connect to the stereo (e.g. my blackberry). So I'm considering attaching the auxmod unit to the stereo.

I have a question about that Ipod cable...

When connecting the Auxmod, do I have to disconnect the Ipod cable? Or is there something associated with that existing Ipod cable that I can use without purchasing the Auxmod?

I admit, I haven't pulled the console apart to look at it. I think I'll not do that unless I'm actually installing something.

Thank you all for your kindness in answering a newbee. And this site rocks!

have it ..love it. 10 minutes to install cable is actually a 3.5mm cable not a ipod cable so it will hook to any device with a headphone jack. I have a ipod and i have a zen works great on both...

Glad to know you like it.

If I have the ipod cable in already, is there anything already installed I can use, or do I need to get the auxmod anyway?

ok, here's the scoop for anyone looking at the same issue.

I had the iPod specific cable already installed when I purchased my 5. But, I'm personally anti-iPod (blasphemy, I know), and I have other mp3 players (including my cell) that I wanted to plug in. Obviously the highly proprietary iPod won't allow other mp3 players to connect to an iPod cable (I researched THAT thoroughly).

So, I was worried that if I purchased the auxmod I wouldn't be able to plug it into the stereo since the iPod cable might be using that deck space.

Turns out my fears were unfounded. The iPod cable plugs in elsewhere. I plugged in the auxmod board (fairly simple procedure, once you figure out how to pull the console apart).

So now I have the auxmod (which I use every time I drive) AND the iPod cable (just in case I ever have a friend who owns one...unlikely, but possible).

Try grom audio. They make connection for ipods or USB and you can still use your steering wheel controls to go through the songs. They are very inexpensive. Around $60. Good Luck

Check the going price for the iPod cable on ebay - you can sell it and make a few bucks. Or keep it on the off-chance that a guest in your car has an iPod. "Hey, let me hook that up for you..."
