We love mid-size sedans if for no other reason than buyers benefit from the incredibly high level of competition between each player in the segment, and Ford's just-revealed 2010 Fusion appears ready to compete. We only have one image, but it shows the Fusion's new face with an even bigger three-bar grille, nicely contoured hood, angry-eye headlights and a sharply redesigned lower bumper. There's also a new engine lineup with three mills to choose from. The first is an all-new Duratec 2.5L four-cylinder with 174 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque (up 14 hp/16 lb-ft from prior 2.3L). The second is a reworked version of the current 3.0L V6 with 19 more horsepower for a total of 240 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque. And finally Ford will be offering the Fusion with its new 3.5L V6 for 2010, which will make a class competitive 263 hp and 249 lb-ft of torque. The best part? All three engines will be paired with Ford's 6F35 six-speed automatic transmission.

Ford hasn't revealed fuel economy numbers yet, but says the four-cylinder's fuel economy will go up a full 10% and the sixes between 4-6% thanks in large part to the new tranny. This will also be the year Ford introduces the Fusion Hybrid and Mercury Milan Hybrid, which will feature the previously announced SmartGauge and can travel up to 47 mph in all-electric mode with a range of more than 700 miles. Unfortunately, it appears that the 2010 Fusion won't be available with any turbocharged, direct-inject EcoBoost powertrains, but the new engines and transmission, along with the nose job, are a big step forward for Ford's already competitive Fusion.

I'm not normally a fan of the big, in-your-face grills, but I think I like it. I love everything but the grill for sure. I'll have to see it in person to decide for sure.

Under its new hood, Fusion gets four powertrain options for 2010 - replacing the outgoing two motor configuration. Previously, Fusion (and Milan) had offered a 2.3 liter, 160 horsepower four-cylinder and a 3.0 liter, 221 horsepower V6. All powertrains will be equipped with a 6F35 six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift gate for V6 models. The four-cylinder will come standard with a six-speed manual

That is 2 extra points :D

Seems like a step in the right direction for Ford. Lots of engine options with decent power, good transmission options, and looking at least a little better than some of their previous offerings.

EDIT: Nevermind! I just read that it is auto only

That will not happen anytime soon. Maybe when the Fusion is completely redesigned. It would be nice to have the Mondeo here.

I agree. They've done a good job, in my opinion, of combining the U.S. style big grille and headlight look with the European Ford "Kinetic Design" (or whatever it's called). And from what I was told yesterday by a coworker (who has a friend who works high up at Ford, and has driven the next-gen Focus) regarding what Ford's been doing with it's money to work toward profitability, I expect good things from Ford, as long as they can survive long enough to carry them through. I have considerably more faith, at this point, in Ford's turnaround than in GM or Chrysler. He said that Ford didn't sell most of their shares in Mazda just to obtain quick cash, but also because they have been working to build their in-house U.S. engineering and design departments so they no longer need to rely on Mazda for those things. They're working to get U.S. Ford engineering and design to be up to European Ford standards or better, and apparently feel like they're mostly there.

that grille is to ghetto, to much chrome. get the euro look over. second why can you not get any engine options in the v6 with a manual. boo need more manuals. 3rd why is the 3rd brake lamp assem built into the trunk assem. looks gay. either put it in the rear window or on the spoiler. the inside is white hot sex. outside is still something to be desired.

If they sell it with a "Delete Bling Chrome" option, I'd consider it. Otherwise, it's not bad - disappointing that they still don't offer a manual with them, but still.

At least they're finally getting around to using 6 speed automatics (In the new F150, except in the base trucks - still using 4 speeds).

6iguy2005
11-19-2008, 04:39 PM

big v6? i'm confused, maybe I'm missing something

So the Engine Choices are:

3.0L v6
and

i obviously don't understand engines LOL

2.5L I4 - 174HP (makes sense here, to a degree)
3.0L v6 - 240HP (quite a lot for the 3.0L that used to only make 200)
and
3.5L v6 - 265HP (this engine needs AT LEAST 30 more HP)

Why the 3L ?!? it doesnt make sense

Toyota Camry: 268HP 3.5L
Honda Accord: 271HP 3.5L
Hyundai Sonata: 249HP 3.3L
Chevrolet Malibu: 252HP 3.5L

So it's right there with the rest BUT here's the kicker:

Infiniti G35 Sedan: 303HP 3.5L

The TL is up there as well.

But Infiniti has always been in a league of it's own.
It's also a luxury sedan though.
Don't forget the Mazda6.

I see your point, no need for the 3.0L V6 but Ford has always been known for having multiple trims, some that don't make any sense.
I wonder if we looked at price of the 3.0L vs the 3.5L, it may make more sense.
I'm too lazy to bring those numbers up right now, sorry. =)

The new Fusion Sport actually has a different motor (same 3.5 as the new 6) and the option of AWD. I wonder if the rumored Fusion GT evolved into this, and when the EcoBoost becomes available, we'll see them drop one in the Sport.

You seem to forget that Ford and Mazda are still related, and that the Fusion is merely new skin on that CD3 platform. Besides, I'm waiting to see what Mazda does with the new 6, to see if they actually put AWD back on that platform or give it a manual option, otherwise I might wait for the 2011 Mustang 5.0 when it comes back.

Have you not been in a Fusion, Milan, or MKZ? The fit and finish is light years ahead of most of their other products. Its actually better then your 6 to be honest.

actually yes i have.. besides the lincoln which is a luxo car the other 2 had me wanting more and very disappointed. i have been drivng ford cars and trucks for the last 11 years. never buying anything else. i am sorry but the new 6 is way nicer than the fusion. the only thing i would buy from ford now is a truck if i had need for one. other than that i'll stick with mazda's. as far as my 6 which came out before the fusion/milan. the fit and finish ride and overall car was better. my friend had a fusion an 06 to be excact with nearly the same options we had standard on the 6. and his was in the shop atleast a dozen times with problems. knock on wood, the only time my 6 has everbeen in was for routine maint. to this day. so based on that on what other ppl i know that have fusions and theproblems they've had i will stay away from ford and get a nicer looking (imo) more than likely less problematic car.

The fit-and-finish and quality of materials of the interiors of the new Fords are fantastic, better than just about any other. Look at the reviews of the Lincoln MKS and Ford Flex. This is the result of Mulally's push for higher quality cars, and it's paying off. I'm interested to sit in the new Mustang's interior, as well as the new Fusion.

I like it overall, but if I could change something, I'd re-think the grille. It looks like chrome strips glued to the nose at the last minute. Doesn't look very integrated.

The taillights immediately reminded me of a Focus....and that's not a compliment.

Of course the Mazda6 is nicer than the current Fusion. The Fusion was introduced back in 2005. The new 6 is an 09. The Fusion is getting its mid life cycle update in 2010. Personally I think it should be replaced but American brands do not like to do body style cyclee every 4 to 5 years like the Japanese do.

I know plenty of people with both 6s and Fusions. Some have problems and others do not. What year is your buddy's Fusion? Is it a first year model?

I've never had the honor of owning a Ford.

I am glad Ford of America is moving in the same direction as Ford of Europe in the design and styling and the fit and finish. I was not stating that Ford has the best interiors out but I was saying they have come along way from the cheap slippery and shiny plastic and gaps that they are known for. They still have a ways to go to be Honda or VW quality.

If you bought either brand new or as a CPO'd car then fine but when there is no warranty is when its gets really expensive. I never implied that it was the cheap. However its no wonder to me why newer cars total out with a lot less of an impact with building materials like this. Is it part of a crush/crumple zone, possibly. Was it engineered to withstand a minor collision probably not. Especially with a lot of taller SUVs and trucks on the road they will pass right over the crash brace in the front and whats first in line for stopping a 2 ton soccer mom on the phone?

Plastic is more so used for weight reduction. After seeing this car in person I have to say it caught my eye and in a good way. The Euro influence and "edge" style is certainly present.
