taking off CAI

Ever since I put my CAI on I felt that my car actually got slower. Anyway this weekend ive got a little free time so im going to get my old stock intake out of storage and see how it feels. Anyway should I clean the filter or anything before I put it back in? Its been in indoor storage for 4 months in a box. Just dont want to get any crap in my engine.

Does that mean purchase the air filter cleaning liquid stuff? Can you find that stuff at autozone ?

If you have a k&n drop in filter then yeah just go to autozone or any parts store and they'll have it. Just be carefull when oiling it. I talked to a gm mechanic one time and he said he's seen so many people over oil them and then that crap gets all over your maff sensor and everything else and screws it up.

Before you go through the hassle of ripping the intake off, try pulling the neg. terminal off the battery and letting it 'relearn' the ECU. Don't beat on it right away while the LTFT's recalibrate, and you might see a difference. Just a suggestion for a quick fix.

I've read this before. Is that what you suggest doing after adding any mod? Will this force the ECU to 'notice' the new mods and will recalibrate?

So just remove the neg terminal for maybe a minute or two, then reconnect and drive maybe 35 mph for a few miles??

*** For 'lite' mods anyway. Im not saying using this mod for anything drastic, like turbo upgrades or anything.

In fact while Im asking what is the most drastic mod you would use this method for?

Definitely. For intake, and mods like that, pulling the neg. terminal can be beneficial. Other mods have to be tuned for.

Ok ill try that steve. When I installed the intake I took the negative terminal off but I didnt press the brake to drain the battery. I guess ill give that a try before I take it out.

So far, nobody has proven that any mods HAVE TO be tuned for. Intake, DP and other exhaust, inlet, CDFP, turbo manifold.... all run just fine without actual tuning. Now, that being said, I would say that to get the MOST out of any mod, you would have to tune it - but saying that you HAVE TO tune is almost absurd on this car. The ECU is very sophisticated....

Oh, and if you don't believe me, ask whoosh how a 35R, TBE, intake, inlet, turbo manifold and BC work on the stock ECU.
Hint: he put down 340+ with that combo (untuned) - and another 40whp with the CPe FCF

Again, I'm not saying it's optimal, but untuned, this car can take just about anything we've seen so far.

Yeah, actually you are more correct than I. Tuning isn't needed, but it really gets the optimal power out of the parts.

Really new to this... Im a previous Honda guy. Turbos are a whole new breed of dog.

It's funny how one of my friends (NSRT4 owner) constantly just doesn't get it.... He doesn't understand how I can throw on a FMIC, TBE, reworked turbo and not tune it.... I just laugh. He also doesn't get that the DashHawk reads the factory wideband, therefore allowing me to read the AFRs without a separate AEM UEGO or anything like that.... it's really funny..... every time he asks me about the wideband lol

It's definitely a very uncommon thing that we have here.... difficult to understand at the beginning until you get into it.

Yeah, but its the beauty of technology. The adaptive ECU isn't a difficult thing to have, but I'm glad Mazda does use it. Now if they could only get away from the closed-loop under WOT it would be awesome.
