View Full Version : FS: Like-New Unichip!
Like the thread title says, I'm selling my Unichip -- which is essentially brand new. Here's the story behind it.
I bought it new from Horsepower Freaks two years ago, for about $800 (which was a pretty good deal at the time). When it arrived in the mail, I immediately put it into storage. Why? Because I didn't want to run it until I had all my other engine modifications done.
Finally, this past summer, I was ready to put it in. I shipped it to JDM Sam (who is well-known for doing 'lost distance' Unichip tunes), had him tune it, and then installed it. I had it in the car and running for approximately a half hour. I then decided to remove it. Why? I realized that the 440cc WRX injectors I had installed were unneeded for my boost applications, and that's what the Unichip had been tuned for.
I never wound up sending it back to JDM Sam to be re-tuned for stock injectors. Why? Because my priorities in life have changed.
So here it is, up for sale. I'm asking $525 shipped OBO. I don't deal with dibs. The first person to send the money, gets the Unichip. My Paypal is Cindy.Engle@gmail.com (clengle@marauder.millersville.edu) .. Please send me a PM letting me know that you've sent anything.
I have EVERYTHING that ever came with this kit. Installation instructions, registration cards, the keychain, even the little decal stickers. All of it.
Some additional notes:
1. My kit was missing the boost solenoid when it was first delivered. I didn't realize this until this past summer, when I finally opened the box to install the kit. I contacted Unichip and they sent me one. So the kit has a boost solenoid that's brand-spankin'-new and has hardly even been touched.
2. This Unichip is still programmed with the custom tune I got from JDM Sam. If the buyer is going to have the Unichip tuned upon receiving the kit, then this is not a concern. However, if the buyer is NOT planning on having the Unichip tuned for their personal setup (which would be a shame, but the buyer's decision) -- then I can see about sending it back to JDM Sam and having it set back to the 'default' Unichip tune, which is set up for ONLY an intake and exhaust. This will also cause a delay in receiving the item. Please be aware. Ultimately, I think the best choice would be for the buyer to have it tuned (by JDM Sam or a local tuner) for their own setup, so that the Unichip runs to the best of its ability.
If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. :)

I already sold the 440s awhile ago, and have no plans to get any EMS now. Like I said, life's priorities have changed.

Not at all. Just gotta be tuned for 'em.
is it expensive to have JDM Sam tune a Unichip?
Not particularly. It's generally a fraction of the cost of an 'in person' tune .. at least, it was when I compared it to the tuner shops around here.

Really shouldn't even consider this at all, but oh well...
Curious about what the tune is for exactly, just stock setup with 440 injectors or some other modifications as well?
To clarify my question: Don't know how spesific the Unichip tune is... Will this work fine with a GT28RS and a 626 intake manifold and 440 injectors the way it is or will it have to be retuned for that?

I'm honestly not sure. My guess would be that as long as the Unichip is tuned properly, it should run -- because the Unichip replaces the entire stock ECU. And unless the regular Protege ECU doesn't 'hook up' the same as the MSP, it should all still mate up properly. I think. Anyone else know the definite answer to this?

My Unichip was tuned for: stock MSP turbo, SRI, MAM FMIC kit (hardpipes and all that), Greddy Type-RS BOV, relocated MAF, Protege Garage (626) intake manifold, 440cc injectors, colder spark plugs, Thunder exhaust manifold, and a full turbo-back exhaust .. all running on at least 93 octane.
As far as whether or not it will run in your car -- I can't say for sure. I'm going to make a guess that it should run. However, I don't know how WELL it will run. Worse comes to worse, you could always send it to JDM Sam for a tune, if you bought the Unichip and it didn't run to your satisfaction. :)

I am a total newbie to this, So if you don't mind, Ill ask some stupid questions.
1. Will tis plug into a regular protege?
2. Is this the same as an engine management or is it piggyback?
3. Is it OK to run it on an NA setup first and then when i get boost, can it reprogrammed?
Sorry if I sound stupid...

No worries!
I have little doubt that this will plug into a regular Protege. However, you'll have to have it tuned, as your car won't run with the map that's currently programmed on the Unichip. If you like, I can send Unichip an email and double-check that this unit can be tuned for an N/A Protege. But I'm sure it will run once you're boosted, it's just the N/A part that I'm uncertain about.
This is a piggyback system -- but it is an engine management system (EMS), too. Here's a page on Unichip's site to give you some more info:
http://www.unichip.us/Plug-Play.asp
Let me know if you'd like me to email Unichip to ask them about the N/A stuff for you. :)

I would like to, but I already have the SS AFC soldered (SP) in place and working on getting it tuned. This might have already been answered but how hard is the install? And how easy is it to tune?

Install is a piece of cake. It's pretty much just a matter of plugging it in and running some wires through the firewall.
Tuning is another matter. There are two options -- finding a Unichip tuner that's local to you who can tune it in person, or going through JDM Sam (who's here on the forums) for a 'long distance' tune. Finding a local tuner can be either easy or difficult depending on your location, but sending it to JDM Sam is never a problem.
Thanks for the bumps, guys! :D

At the moment, it's tuned for 440cc injectors, FMIC, intake, BOV, exhaust, PG intake manifold and Thunder exhaust manifold.

I thought u said it was retuned for your stock injectors.
I mean sell it for 500 not 525.

Oh! No no, it hasn't been retuned at all. What that first post is saying is that the buyer can get the Unichip as it stands right now, and have it retuned for their own setup -- OR, if the buyer wants to wait after purchase, I can see if JDM Sam will retune it back to the 'base map'. Option #1 is much more recommended, though.
And I might consider selling it for $500 shipped. :)

So what happened with the 440's it ran bad? I guess I might really be interested I can probably get this as a christmas present or something.
So what happened with the 440's it ran bad? I guess I might really be interested I can probably get this as a christmas present or something.
Nah, it ran just fine. I just didn't realize until AFTER I'd gotten the 440s, and the Unichip tuned for them, that I didn't really need the 440s for my setup. Overkill. So I pulled them out, put the stock injectors back in, and sold the 440s. I intended to have the Unichip tuned again for the stock injectors (and all my other mods) -- but other things came up. Bought a house, expenses for that, new applicances, blah-dee-blah. So I ultimately decided to sell the Unichip, to help fund the new house stuff.

I think ima buy it then. Put it on hold, I'll be back tonite or tomorrow.
Why was it overkill? Stock turbo not much boost? No negative aspects.
Stock turbo not much boost? No negative aspects.
Exactly. The car ran just fine with the 440s, but considering I have no plans to go with a bigger turbo or to raise my boost, they just weren't necessary. So I figured I might as well go back to stock injectors and sell the 440s, get a little more money to put towards the house crap.
Shoot me a PM or post here when you decide if you want it or not. :D
