According to multiple unnamed sources speaking with Autoweek, General Motors has put its plans for a C7 Corvette on "indefinite hold, with no official or set timetable." That's a pretty broad admission, but not entirely surprising considering the financial issues plaguing GM, the rest of the domestics and the world as a whole.

Originally it was thought that the current C6 Corvette would undergo significant upgrades over the course of the next five years, with the C7 coming to market in 2014. That timeframe doesn't appear to hold water anymore, and Autoweek maintains that GM's leadership doesn't have a clear plan for what the future holds for the 'Vette, not to mention the rest of the General's lineup.

However, Corvette vehicle-line executive Tom Wallace assured the weekly pub that the halo coupe isn't going anywhere. "We're still working on future Corvettes," Wallace said, and "there are changes, some neat stuff, coming for 2010 that I can't talk about yet." Wallace went on to say that the 2010 model wouldn't be considered an all-new car and that the 35-mpg CAFE standards for 2020 are having an effect on future drivetrains specs of the next Corvette.

Yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if they canned the Camaro in a few weeks.

Yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if they canned the Camaro in a few weeks.

That will not happen because GM has alot of money already invested into the Camaro. The Corvette C7 is just in the planning and design stages.

The world's first 4-cylinder Corvette takes a bow in 2014. Ha

I don't think the CAFE has anything to do with this. I bet it's more the fact that they are diverting all their money to buying Chrysler. The C6 is still new enough and there is still things they can do to make it better.

Good point. Afterall, how long did they run with the C4?

I think 82-96. I could be wrong.

Exactly...they can ride the C6 out for more than 5 years.

The C4 ran from 84-96. The MY82 was the last year for the C3. There was no MY83 Corvette.

I wish they would.. that thing is hideous.

HA! I wanted to see who would bite! You are right about there not being an 83, but the c4 came out late 82 as an 84.

C4
The fourth generation was introduced at the close of 1982 production as a 1984 model and ended in 1996, meaning that there’s no such thing as a “1983 Corvette”. The C4 corvette is known for its boxy look. In the coupe it also is the first Corvette to have a glass hatchback (except for the 1982 Collector’s Edition) for better storage access. It also had all new brakes with aluminum calipers. The Corvette C4 came standard with an electronic dashboard with digital liquid crystal displays for speed and RPM. The C4 was a complete redesign of the previous generation, and the emphasis was on handling. The C4 Corvette was proclaimed the best handling car ever when it was released. This handling came at the expense of a stiff, unforgiving ride. The unit-body frame used in the C4 was also prone to rattles and squeaks due to frame flexing. Also due to the external unit-body frame, the door sills were quite deep and entry and exit were impeded. Lastly, the bumper did not meet federal bumper regulations.

They could keep riding the same platform for a while, just update the styling, possibly changing width, length and wheel base to give the perception of a new chassis.
